In a few months Freeview HD is launched and everyone will require a new box to get the HD channels. So unless you absolutely need one now you shouldn't buy one, and if you do need one, get the cheapest you can, don't waste money on a 3 year warrenty for a device that will be outdated in 6 months.

is there really a Freeview HD service being released in a few months? I don't think that's right

I've had to test the Aldi warranty twice and it's was painful.

I had a satnav pda from them and the charging connector worked loose with only very minor use. Despite this being an inherent recognized issue with their medion model and other mio clones (mio 168) out there in the market - I was accused of using "unreasonable force" on the product that caused the break. Better still, having sent the product for repair under warranty, my choices were: a) pay £90 for repair and return b) pay £40 for admin and return of the faulty item! .... and then you wonder how they get all of the factory refurb'd products on the medion website!

The store wipes their hands of it, as does head office and the regional offices once you've had such items beyond 28 days - you're then in the hands of the "manufacturers"

I like Aldi specials, but honestly, I wouldn't buy them on the back of their warranties! For me, they have as much value as a tin of their best beans!

Starts in december but it's only being rolled out as analogue is switched off, so if you're in an area where it's gonna be another couple of years then I guess you'll be waiting.

I'm not sure what the heck the hold up is anymore, it was origianally all supposed to be switched off this year, then they extended it. when they're selling the boxes for a fiver now, you'd think they could just post them to everyone with a tv license and switch it all off already

People fear change. If they woke up and their TV had stopped working they'd be burning effigies of Gordon Brown in the street.

Freeview HD will only ever offer a few channels (via 2 multiplexes if memory serves), maybe 5 channels. Less channels with more compression than freesat HD.

That will not stop the existing receivers from working will it?

So how will they be " outdated ".??

6 months is a tad optimistic as well.

...Tevion is top quality, trust me ...

I would have difficulty trusting anyone who made such a statement.

Interesting to hear about problems with Aldi guarantees. I have only ever had one small fault with an expensive item (PC) and a new graphics card was sent out without problem. My only complaint was the cost of the phone call, but my local store manager said I could bring the item to the shop and they would phone. If the items were sub standard you should have rights under Sale of Goods Act. The threat of going to Small Claims Court/Trading Standards usually works (not that I have had to use this with ALDI)

Just what is so different to many of the other big retailers in this country?

Go to the Small Claims Court!
The contract is with the RETAILER, not the manufacturer.

Every company you would care to mention will try to worm out of their responsibilities, but as much a drag as this is, it is usually a lot less bother than being messed about by retailers and manufacturers shirking their legal responsibility.

Simply untrue in my experience. returns to amazon, argos and tescos in the last 12 months have all been pain free for me. The only bad experience was with play.com but now most people know not to buy expensive goods from them due to them only having a 28 day return policy!

I certainly wouldnt want the hassle of making a court claim and standing up in court making my case. i suspect most others wouldnt either.

I did say MOST... agreed some companies are relatively little bother (although very few fail to make some song and dance about it!) the DSG companies and Comet being good examples of lots-of-hassle companies who sell huge amounts of stuff.

Most small claims cases are "on paper" only too - and now can be done online too! http://www.moneyclaim.gov.uk/ its's lot better than being robbed, which is the alternative when they wilfully fail to stand up to their duty

Actually you said:-

Every company you would care to mention will try to worm out of their responsibilities

Anyway, didnt realise you dont have to go to court. Thanks for the info.

There was a time when Aldi a few years ago led the way with dicount electricals. Very rare now, you can more often than not find a lower price and better spec similar, and often branded item elsewhere. This I am affriad is a good example, as is the bluray player they also have on offer.
