Decent episodes but a terrible collection.
Top 100 DVD Reviewer

While the episodes themselves are rather enjoyable, the approach taken in their making, along with the quality of the DVD boxset, is a little disappointing.

Compared to the original Tintin books, these early 90s adaptations are far more politically correct. They're obviously more aimed at kids than adults, because many of the edgier parts of Hergé's classics have been edited out, such as Captain Haddock's obsession with whisky and some of the more non-PC dialogue. Some classic Tintin moments are removed, along with much of the political aspects of Tintin which were presumably removed because they have no relevance to children today, though these aspects really define the periods in which the various Tintin books were written.

Regarding the DVDs themselves, the number of discs in the collection seems excessive. The episodes are released on 10 discs despite the fact that each disc only has around 3GB worth of data on it - the entire collection could have easily been fitted…

same price at Amazon without Quidco

Got this from Play when it was last on HUKD - not sure what Tara's spouting about but the review she quoted is unfair on the collection. I grew up with TinTin on the TV and this boxset is the collection I grew up with. The reviewer is comparing the boxset to the books. The fact there may or may not be too many discs for the collection is irrelevant.

Voted hot from me (I think it cost me £15!) - never read the books (not my generation ;)) but may track a few down sometime. Great TV for the kids too, I know an 8 year old who is very keen for me to open my boxset (saving it for my birthday) :whistling:

:w00t: LOL!! I'll feel even older when I remember it was on at 5pm for 5mins on channel 4, right after the Oprah Winfery show, it took ages to get through an episode with only 5 mins a day!!! How did we ever live without Sky +!!!

Great series, used to love watching in the mornings when I was younger.

The only disappointment in this set for me was Red Rackhams Treasure, much shorter than the rest and missed out a fair bit that was in the books. Other than that I think they did a good job converting them.

Is it just me or does Tintin look like he is holding onto something in that picture and is saying to himself " I really need the loo" !!!

This is a great DVD set

IMHO this DVD set IS a hot deal, and no issue could be found really with it being a nice collection of the shows which could be viewed in sequence to tell the various trilogy story sets and singles of the Tintin series. At worst - a tenner for holidays-in-the-rain-7-days-in-a-caravan material for kids which isnt power puff girl or bob the builder propaganda.

Personally tho - i was an avid reader of the Tintin graphic novels back in the day when they actually came out in hardcovers, full color, complete storylines. They had some real guts to them as the video reviewer at play.com suggests, and i think having read the books i wouldnt watch the series myself but prefer maybe to revisit the books themselves and buy the boxset of BOOKS instead.

The deal is still hot regardless, especially if you can wangle additional quidco or such on top of it.

Do these have the voices that we heard in the 70's?
i.e.
Captain Haddock=Pirate
Thompson Twins=Effeminate Yuppie
#22

This is a hot deal.

I can understand the nostalgia involved with this but i would rather sit and watch my dad cream himself than sit through this.

I remember those episodes.
I'm sure they came on Saturday mornings along with Robinson Crusoe and Flashing Blade!
