Had a retro moment. Not seen this since it came out and Silent Running had been posted :)

The U.S.S. Cygnus is perched precariously at the edge of a black hole...the vast, empty nothingness where space and time end. Anything that crosses its border enters a universe of the complete unknown. And so begins a story that only humanoids film magicians could tell. A story of robots and humanoids. Of human genius and madness. And a spectacular descent into natures ultimate mystery - THE BLACK HOLE.

this was a bit of a departure for the walt disney company. its quite dark and has a bit of violence.
remember the big red robot (can't recall its name) with blenders for hands?

Great film, sure the effects look rather tired now, but a good storyline, and Maximilian Schell was perfect as the sinister scientist.Voted Hot!

I was obsessed with this movie when I was a kid. Actually, probably still am, a bit - as mentioned above, it was Disney's first non U certificate movie (it was an "A", equivalent of today's PG, pretty much). It was riding the wave of Star Wars mania, but had pretensions of being something more cerebral - along the lines of 2001. It tanked, didn't it?

OH, and it's got a superb score from John Barry as well.

Thought back in the 80s it was a great film still think so now.

Ending always gets people talking

New version being done by Disney soon!

Robots were:
Maximillian - Big Red nasty dood.....
Bob - Bio Sanitation Brigade
Vincent - Vital information neccesary centralised
Star - Special Troops Arms Regiment

Now all I need is a blu ray version of the last starfighter in europe region coding and im made!

PS New Tron movie coming too...

The two things I've always remembered this for are the fantastic "greenhouse" spacecraft and the brilliant score. Film itself was pants though. Oh well, can't have everything. :p

This is the best Disney movie of the period IMO. I've had it on DVD for years. Shame it is so neglected - no re-mastered edition, no commentaries, no blu-ray. Just the pop-up book that came out at the time and some other materials. You can't even get a pin at Disneyland now.

The pound off text code still works (even though the competition has now closed), even hotter at £2.85 :)

Yeah I was nuts for this film also when I first saw it on telly - Christmas movie with the like of moonraker etc when i was 11!
Good old school movie this I think its fantastic film really
- with action, spaceships, cute robots, evil robot, and a mad scientist not to mention the non cgi but disney animated effects - and a big scary black hole
- lots of good science about black holes too!'

H&R:thumbsup:

What!?! The special effect still look great now. Partly because they went for a sinister but minimalist gothic look for the ship design, instead of endless rows of large flashing lights which makes so many other old sci fi films look horribly dated now. It is possibly not as fun as Star Wars, but despite it being a Disney cash in, it is quite a different film - darker, more claustrophobic and more character orientated. Terrifically foreboding score and good acting make it superior (if not classic) science fiction. Bizarre that Disney intended it as a children's film though.
