next cheapest is £3.99 from play.com

cheapest i've ever seen it online. prety good film too.

Writer-turned-director Richard Curtis (LOVE ACTUALLY, NOTTING HILL) directs a cast comprising the cream of British acting talentwhich includes Bill Nighy (NOTES ON A SCANDAL, LOVE ACTUALLY), Rhys Ifans (NOTTING HILL, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE MIDLANDS), Nick Frost (SHAUN OF THE DEAD, HOT FUZZ) and Kenneth Branagh (HENRY V, CELEBRITY), along with one lone American star in the shape of Philip Seymour Hoffman (CAPOTE, DOUBT)--in this comedy set in Britain in 1966. With the BBC only allowing two hours of rock and roll to be played on its airwaves per week, a pirate radio station aboard a North Sea-cruising yacht broadcasts music to the pop-starved masses, turning its seafaring disc jockeys into overnight superstars. Taking the infamous Radio Caroline as inspiration, THE BOAT THAT ROCKED is an hilarious feel-good romp in the tradition of Curtis' best-loved work and benefits from a knockout soundtrack featuring some of the most memorable tracks of the time.

While I usually enjoy Richard Curtis films (even if they are a bit corny) I found this film a bit of a mess.

A large cast that seemed to be on camera most of the time, making it hard to pick out lead characters. While having a large cast worked for Love Actually it did not work here.

I also felt it was very badly and sloppily directed.

p.s. I am also old enough to remember the pirate radio ships when they first came out.

p.p.s I just realised Richard Curtis directed it, no wonder it was a bit of a mess. No substitute for a good director, as Mike Myers found out in The Love Guru

Agreed. I too bought this having heard that it was funny. Utter tat!

Great film.

OFFICIAL OPINION: Its Crap

Sub Love Actually by about twice as much terrible. However my missus likes it as does me female workmate. so maybe the ladies prefer it but basically it had NO comparability to the story of UK pirate radio, The characterisation was basically - simple caricatures and so stunk of the usual Brit flick 'quirky' types ... the high concept film for the lowest common denominator .. possibly the Yanks? I dunno. But lets say it wasnt quite Four Weddings And A Funeral, shall we?. Terrible "story", terrible direction... veered all over the place and terrible casting ... the kind of film you come out asking "why did we just waste twelve quid on what will be shown on ITV in about a year?" ... one of the worst films (that and The Avengers) I have ever seen and came out wishing I hadn't gone in ... BUT having said all that - I couldn't really fault it ... :whistling:

It's a Richard Curtis film for the sake of it, utter rubbish poor and dull plot with predictable outcomes and puns.

Not even worth £3.

Couldnt have put it better myself .. without using ten words instead of one ... (sigh)

This was a cynical cash-in .. .trying to use the real Radio Caroline story as a 'draw' to get folks to see it .... my missus who is pretty good at her film opinions lost a LOT of credibility when she said this and Mamma Mia were both 'good' ... she also grouped them inthe same enjoyment category as Hurt Locker... what the hell???

I thought it sucked.

Dreadful movie redeemed by an exquisite sound track. Took me back to the Caroline/Luxembourg days.

Mind you, anything with Philip Seymour Hoffman is worth a watch.

PS: I'm not gay.

Seen this in the pics with my mate, we almost walked out then had a laughing fit at her nodding off half way through, highlight of the film, shame it wasn't the actual film!
#11
Total crap. Though this was going to be a sort of history of the great years of radio but total tat.
Bet there are loads of gutted pirate radios fans who watched this and are gutted.
Waste of a couple of hours of my life

As a film critic, I would know what I'm talking about, unlike some unbelievable remarks about this film. Not all films have aliens & slit throats to make people watch.

Assuming, you mean that the Boat That Rocked was a good film.... I think we can at least agree our taste in movies is completely opposite?

Watched a couple of films this weekend - Bad Lieutenant - was OK but nothing special really.

And Kick Ass which was generally silly but good fun overall
