Berlin, 1942. Eight-year-old Bruno knows nothing of the Final Solution and the Holocaust. He is oblivious to the appalling cruelties being inflicted on the people of Europe by his country. All he knows is that his father was promoted and he has been moved from a comfortable home in Berlin to a house in a desolate area where there is nothing to do and no-one to play with. Then he meets Shmuel, a boy who lives a strange parallel existence on the other side of the adjoining wire fence and who, like the other people there, wears a uniform of striped pajamas. Bruno's friendship with Shmuel will take him from innocence to revelation, as their secret meetings result in a friendship that has startling and devastating consequences.

Based upon the novel by John Boyne, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a heart-wrenching tale of an unlikely friendship that forms between the son of a concentration camp commander and a young Jewish boy during World War II. Directed by renowned British filmmaker Mark Hermon (Little Voice, Brassed Off) the film features a cast that includes Vera Farmiga (The Departed, Breaking and Entering) and David Thewlis (Mike Leigh's Naked, The Big Lebowski).

ooh, bad taste.....

Too sad for me - but important viewing none the less and a good price. Not got brilliant reviews but it sounds like its strengths outweigh its weaknesses.

I guess in the future it (book/film) will become part of the teaching around the Holocaust at some point for all children - which is no bad thing as it must never be forgotten...

Is it the movie or the price that makes this a good entry here?
It has been promoted in this forum quite few times!
I have watched it and it is not too bad for a saturday morning watching but not an Oscar winner at all!

Naff film until the end, which in some ways provided quite a good contrast on many levels.

Don't think I'd watch it again, but it rescued itself at the end.

the book is better than the movie because the movie misses out the details the book does. but movie is more emotional towards some parts :)

Not the best to b honest, watched on sky and didn think much of it, but my gfrend read the book an was emtionally crippled by it, so a good read apparently

Excellent film

Overrated, worth watching but not owning.

Decent book....but an absolutely appalling dramatisation....badly shot, hackneyed direction, cliche ridden movie....AVOID!!!!

Absolute junk version of what could / should have been a harrowing tale. A waste of David Threlafall's talents as an actor......

My 12yr old son was so captivated by the film he complained the book wasn't in the school library and pestered his teacher to watch the movie with the class. His generation needs to see this movie as it shows what extremism can lead to if not checked.

Whilst it might not be the greatest film, if it gets kids to think about the past and shows them what can happen, then it is a great educational tool.

I think this is a wonderful film, very sad but certainly makes you think.

Chick flick !

Not quite a bad film but it really didn't make enough of the subject matter. It was like a poignant film made for children (ie. watered down).
