His name was Kunta Kinte. Kidnapped from Africa enslaved in America in 1767, he refused to accept his slave name Toby. Heirs kept his heroic defiance alive, passing on his tale across generations until it reached a young boy growing up in Tennessee. His name was Alex Haley. Through the lineage of one family, Haley and his Pulitzer Prize - winning Roots told a story for all America and the world. Seen by 130 million viewers during its premiere telecast and the winner of dozens of awards, the David L. Wolper production remains an engrossing entertainment 30 years later. Embark on an unforgettable DVD journey.

Could there be a worthy follow-upto the most-watched miniseries ever? "We felt the other did so well," Alex Haley said, " that we should just let it hang there." But Alex began carrying around a tape recorder, dictating more of his family's tales as they came to his memory. Those remembrances filled 1,000-page transcript: raw material got Roots: The Next Generations.

Winner of the Emmy for Best Limited Series, this landmark continuation of a landmark event - with 53 stars and 235 speaking parts - "is in many respects a superior achievement," Newsweek said in comparing this to Roots. Even now, it has lost none of its dramatic and emotional power to make us confront history and examine ourselves. One man's family remains everyone's!

A truly amazing view back in 1977. Will get this to show the kids.
So this goes right through to when Kunta Kinte joins Strarfleet as Geordie in The Next Generation? :p
It was one of the best Series of 1977. We use to eagerly wait every week to watch this Series.
ive never seen it, then again it aired 4 years before i was born, but since this is a big US series i guess it was bigger than over here, because nobody i know has ever watched it.

i might get it now though since this is pretty definitive.
