I thought there might be afew folk interested in this excellent book with the film just about to be released (Friday 27th). This is the cheapest that I can find it anywhere.

Overachieving and eccentric football manager Brian Clough was on his way to take over at the country's most successful, and most reviled, football club: Leeds United, home to a generation of fiercely competitive but ageing players. The battle he'd face there would make or break the club - or him. David Peace's extraordinarily inventive novel tells the story of a world characterised by fear of failure and hunger for success set in the bleak heart of the 1970s.

Quality read if you like football. ...and no, i'm not just saying that cos i'm a leeds fan. Although it is a work of fiction, it gives a brilliant insight into the world of cloughie. Well written, and original. Good find for a good book!

According to a review I heard on the radio yesterday the family
and friends of Clough found this book to be very offensive.
They described it something like 'one long poem of bile'.

Although the film's supposed to be based on the book it gives a far kinder
view of Clough.

Need to get this, but after hearing the family's complaints, if you're after a biography (this is a fiction book), then 'Provided you don't kiss me' is an absolutely fantastic read.

I hadn't heard of Leeds United either - but I just looked them up on wikipedia and apparently they were a big club in the 70s.

One of the great British managers, a great striker and funny to boot. It's not like he killed anyone.

Have you actually read this book Mascherano? It hardly venerates Clough - it is a great character study of a man in turmoil. The family didn't like it, but I did. Thought it was a cracking read.

Andy's new found status has been discussed at length here.............

I take great exception at the word "sodding". Could you please change that to "lovely" in future? :p

And yes, I have my beady eye on you Mascherano. So watch what you say. And no trolling!!! :whistling:

Not only have you obviously not read this book, it looks questionable that you've read any book.

Pretyt depressing read, especially if you're a Cloughie fan as it does him and Taylor no favours whatsoever and I can see why the family disowned it. I reviewed it on amazon a while back (same name, tallpete33) , gave it 2 stars I think

Massively over-rated

I got the book last week, quite brilliant style, I shot through the first half of it in one day ( and I am a slooooowww reader normally). A first person inner monologue perspective of a manager taking on the top team in football at the time, ...its faction, but very good

Only use the voucher if you are willing to phone CS to actually get the money back. See further discussion in the voucher thread.

picked this up in a charity shop for about 50p, and absolutely loved it. i'm a football fan, but not leeds, or derby, forest etc, or even a particularly big fan of clough, but it seemed so "real" from what i've seen and read about him before.

Go into any pub in Liverpool and say the following:
"Brian Clough was a decent bloke wasn't he?"
Time how long it takes before you get beaten up.
Fun game

they have their reasons, but they are in the minority. and even quite a few of them acknowledge he was one of the best managers.

get real. took 2 no hoping teams from the 2nd divison to english champions. 1 team to european champions - twice!

so he liked a drink, who doesnt? clough was a unique man that told it how it is. there arent enough people like that now days. too many do gooders.

the book is a fantastic read. contrary to reports, i dont think its offensive. it is written superbly and probably the most entertaining book i have ever read. any derby, forest or leeds fan MUST buy this. it doesnt take you through his forest days but i imagine even red dogs will love it.
