British sci-fi author John Wyndham's classic horror piece Day of the Triffids was first filmed as a 95-minute theatrical feature in 1963. Though more thoughtful than most alien-invasion pictures, this tale of a meteor shower that results in huge, mutated, ambulatory maneating plants had to be compressed a bit for the feature version. A more in-depth adaptation of Triffids showed up as a British TV miniseries in 1981. This version starred John Duttine and Emma Relphe in the roles played in 1963 by Howard Keel and Nicole Maurey. This version of Day of the Triffids was telecast by America's Arts cable service (later known as A&E) in the spring of 1984.

Good price watched it recently, it starred a young ray winstone but the ending is odd, as it finished it was announced on BBC it was the final episode as though they had to tell veiwers it was over and we were expecting it to be on next week.

oh my god, price might be ok... but all versions of this are just naff. Better off listening to the audiobook or reading the book yourself... even the sequel "night of the triffids" audiobook is worth a listen.

whenever I see this it always reminds me of my Dad, when I was a kid who used to say "it could happen one day, you know!" ... along with planet of the apes, lost in space and pretty much all B movies / dodgy telly show. It scared me witless as a kid thinking the world was going to be taken over!

The original one is a lot better than the new one with Eddie Izzard. The great thing about older tv shows is that they don't feel the need to pummel you with incidental music continuously, trying to tell you how you should feel about the scene you're watching. Less is definitely more.

agree that the book and the BBC audio production are excellent.
