The Deer Hunter is an astonishing powerful and vivid epic about three steelworkers from Pennsylvania whose lives are changed irrevocably in the tragic devastation of the Vietnam war. When Michael, Steven and Nick are captured by the Vietcong, they are forced to play Russian Roulette by their brutal captors who make bets on their survival. The experience of capture leaves them with terrible physical and spiritual wounds and when Michael returns to Saigon to fulfil an old vow to one of his friends he makes an unexpected horrific discovery. Director Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter won 5 Oscars in 1978 for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Editing and Best Sound.

its more like a play than a film. its basically told in 3 parts and i totally understand where you're coming from about the length... my jaw was hurting from being open pretty much from start to finish (no jokes please). im kinda used to it now, i love my epics.

I know what you mean, it's very, VERY slow to start with compared to the extreme violence and fast excitement of the latter half and impact of the whole film, or modern 'no attention span' films. There's almost a separate film to establish the characters in a very slow way. A little like Taxi Driver.

I wouldn't say it's over-rated though.
