this is garbage, the M11x was that price normally last week anyway, i know this because i nearly bought one! I don't see any reductions what so ever?
#2
on the main XPS page it say XPS 15 from £529, and XPS 17 from £629

http://www1.euro.dell.com/uk/en/home/Dell-Laptops/xpsnb/ct.aspx?refid=xpsnb&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1&~ck=mn

but when I click to check the cheapest XPS 15 is £579 and XPS 17 is £649... have the prices increased or are the laptops OOS?
#3
I am after a laptop, so there are any deals that stand out please let me know :) looking to spend around £500

What an utterly rubbish deal!

I see the i5-520M Studio 17 is on at £779. It's been this price for months & months so where's the deal? What's even more laughable is that you can get the brand new i5-560M Dell XPS 17 with 4GB of RAM, a 500 GB HDD, USB3.0, fab speakers & Nvidia 435M graphics for £759. Dell are trying to clear old stock at HIGHER PRICES than their new stuff. I wonder what clown in Dell's marketing department dreamt this one up!

The M11x at £599 which includes VAT and Delivery is basically a good price. Thats the brutal truth.
However, you are right, most of this as far as I can see is inventory shunting. The PC market has ground to a Halt - and its an attempt to move units. Buyer beware, but good prices and kit are around. You just have to shop to dig them out.

The only reason I'm not sure about the hinge issues on the M11x - otherwise I'd actually buy one.

Using code 7?K06Z293JF3FL the i5-560 XPS 17 is £703 delivered - great value - 1TB disk and decent graphics. Add a Blu-Ray rom for an extra £81 if you want...

These laptops are mostly the same price they were yesterday, only discounted in different ways. Have been cheaper and will be again before Christmas I would say. Having said that, its still not a bad price for what you get.
#8
I'm going to play the waiting game and wait for a bumper xmas deal!!
#9
Thanks for the 10% discount code. At £703, the XPS 17 is extremely tempting!

I thought it looked good - they've discounted it quite heavily - probably worth making it a deal even if you decide not to buy...

PC World in Cambridge is selling a M11x for ~ £599, with £50 trade in for an old computer, at least a £5 voucher from http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/currys-pc-world-15million-pound-giv/798471?page=1 and 5% Quidco.

I would have bought one if it wasn't for the styling.

Having looked at this, and having had this chat

11/16/2010 03:07:58PM DARREN STEWART: "I am interested in the M11x - however, I am aware these machines have a hinge problem. Although I would buy this, I am not sure about the hinge. Please advise?"
11/16/2010 03:08:11PM Agent (krishna_puttamraju): "Thank you for contacting Dell Sales Chat. This is Krishna, your Sales Advisor."
11/16/2010 03:08:15PM Agent (krishna_puttamraju): "Hello Darren"
11/16/2010 03:08:20PM Agent (krishna_puttamraju): "how are you?"
11/16/2010 03:08:25PM DARREN STEWART: "Hi Krishna"
11/16/2010 03:08:33PM DARREN STEWART: "I am alriiiiiight!"
11/16/2010 03:09:04PM DARREN STEWART: "did you see my question?"
11/16/2010 03:09:59PM Agent (krishna_puttamraju): "Yes Darren"
11/16/2010 03:10:49PM Agent (krishna_puttamraju): "At the moment we do not have any hinge issues with the laptop.Dell takes customers feedback seriously and we constantly improve our products and services"
11/16/2010 03:10:54PM DARREN STEWART: "Should I buy a system where I know the hinge is going to fail?"
11/16/2010 03:12:40PM Agent (krishna_puttamraju): "You may try and test the laptop and if you are not satisfied, you may return it with in 7 days of receiving the delivery."
11/16/2010 03:13:37PM DARREN STEWART: "No, you are not listening to me"
11/16/2010 03:13:43PM DARREN STEWART: "Please can you check this linnk"
11/16/2010 03:13:45PM DARREN STEWART: "http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5923"
11/16/2010 03:13:51PM DARREN STEWART: "Its a known problem?"
11/16/2010 03:14:35PM DARREN STEWART: "So, I'm asking, before I spend money on this, is it resolved? Its had a redesign? Or I simply am left facing a product I know will fail?"
11/16/2010 03:15:30PM DARREN STEWART: "Alienware stated they know about this problem - so where do I stand?"
11/16/2010 03:17:41PM Agent (krishna_puttamraju): "The review was for the first version of M11x and the one which we are offering at the moment is the R2 version which doesn't have any hinge issues reported."
11/16/2010 03:20:24PM DARREN STEWART: "The R2 had no change made to the hinge."
11/16/2010 03:22:20PM Agent (krishna_puttamraju): "All the issues have been handled on a case to case basis and there are no specific hinge issues at the moment."
11/16/2010 03:23:03PM DARREN STEWART: "Very well"
11/16/2010 03:23:08PM DARREN STEWART: "Let me put this directly"
11/16/2010 03:23:23PM DARREN STEWART: "Will Dell guarantee the hinges for 3 years?"
11/16/2010 03:23:31PM DARREN STEWART: "even on a 1 year support?"
11/16/2010 03:26:02PM Agent (krishna_puttamraju): "I am afraid we will guarantee any manufacturing defects or hardware failures only for the first 1 year and if you go with the extended 3 year hardware support,it would be covered for 3 years."
11/16/2010 03:29:42PM DARREN STEWART: "Well, on products that do not have a fault, I agree."
11/16/2010 03:29:56PM DARREN STEWART: "But you and I are not talking about that product."
11/16/2010 03:30:25PM DARREN STEWART: "I know - and forgive me - I presume you know, you are selling me something we both know will break - and keep breaking in months."
11/16/2010 03:33:10PM Agent (krishna_puttamraju): "Darren if its gonna break in a months time,Dell would have rolled back the product and I would be offering you the laptop. They have been tried and tested and we keep improving our products and services based on customer feedback and at the moment there ar"
e no specific hinge issues on the laptop and as I said earlier,if it all there is an issue with the hinge,it might break in the very first year of purchase, one doesn't have to wait for 3 years.
11/16/2010 03:33:50PM Agent (krishna_puttamraju): "*wouldn't be"
11/16/2010 03:38:00PM DARREN STEWART: "You know - I don't really understand this. Dell knows about this and you claim they do not."
11/16/2010 03:38:18PM DARREN STEWART: "OK, thanks for your time."
11/16/2010 03:38:29PM DARREN STEWART: "I can't buy from a vendor thats in denial."
11/16/2010 03:42:23PM Agent (Mohammed_Wasif): "Hello"
11/16/2010 03:42:40PM Agent (Mohammed_Wasif): "This is Mohammed, the supervisor"
11/16/2010 03:42:47PM Agent (Mohammed_Wasif): "I have read the entire transcript"
11/16/2010 03:42:57PM DARREN STEWART: "OK?"
11/16/2010 03:43:04PM DARREN STEWART: "Do you understand the hinge issue?"
11/16/2010 03:44:19PM Agent (Mohammed_Wasif): "We have sold few thousand of these units across the regions, and however we have not been reported an issue with the design."
11/16/2010 03:45:08PM DARREN STEWART: "http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m11x/520807-list-owners-m11x-have-hinges-damaged-repaired-already-26.html"
11/16/2010 03:45:19PM Agent (Mohammed_Wasif): "All hardware failures (if any) will be dealt as per the Dell's Standard Service Contracts and are governed by Dell's after sales warranties"
11/16/2010 03:45:25PM Agent (Mohammed_Wasif): "we have gone through these review"
11/16/2010 03:45:25PM DARREN STEWART: "Would you like me to post all the pages that have M11 hinge faults?"
11/16/2010 03:45:29PM Agent (Mohammed_Wasif): "reviews*"
11/16/2010 03:46:12PM Agent (Mohammed_Wasif): "However, we cannot confirm that there is problem with the design"
11/16/2010 03:46:38PM DARREN STEWART: "Look, let us cut to the chase. If the hinge has no fault, then you have no problem offering a 3 year guarantee on the hinge - right?"
11/16/2010 03:46:46PM Agent (Mohammed_Wasif): "If you do order a unit, you will get complete coverage after sales. In case of the any problem you can get a replacement or refund"
11/16/2010 03:47:09PM Agent (Mohammed_Wasif): "we cannot grantee on any part unless you opt to extend the warranty"
11/16/2010 03:47:11PM DARREN STEWART: "No, I know, you can never 'confirm' the design fault. I'm not asking you to. I just want a 3 year guarantee on the hinges."
11/16/2010 03:47:39PM DARREN STEWART: "The rest of the machine can be a 1 year cover."
11/16/2010 03:47:55PM Agent (Mohammed_Wasif): "This is against the policy"
11/16/2010 03:48:07PM Agent (Mohammed_Wasif): "I am afraid, we cannot make such promises"
11/16/2010 03:48:11PM DARREN STEWART: "Don't care - blame me."
11/16/2010 03:48:25PM Agent (Mohammed_Wasif): "you may think about it and then make your purchase decision"
11/16/2010 03:48:44PM DARREN STEWART: "I'm not buying a design fault. Not without warranty"
11/16/2010 03:48:56PM Agent (Mohammed_Wasif): "I respect your decision"
11/16/2010 03:49:09PM Agent (Mohammed_Wasif): "and thank you for your valuable inputs/ feedback."
11/16/2010 03:49:33PM Agent (Mohammed_Wasif): "however, we cannot go beyond policies"
11/16/2010 03:49:37PM Agent (Mohammed_Wasif): "Thanks for your time"
11/16/2010 03:49:40PM DARREN STEWART: "You know- I bet you extend the warranty for people who buy. You just won;t for me."
11/16/2010 03:49:51PM Agent (Mohammed_Wasif): "I won't for anyone"
11/16/2010 03:50:02PM DARREN STEWART: "ok, thanks"
11/16/2010 03:50:15PM Agent (Mohammed_Wasif): "we extend, only for those who upgrade by paying the premium"
11/16/2010 03:50:20PM Agent (Mohammed_Wasif): "thanks, anyway"
11/16/2010 03:52:49PM Session Ended

I decided I won't be buying an M11xR2.
It seems the Hinge is a serious and ongoing issue with that chassis, and as Dell won't either talk about it - nor warranty it beyond reproach, no sale price is low enough to interest me in the M11x-R2

You came across as a bit of an idiot in the above conversation.

I think the agent's reply was very fair. If it breaks in a year then they'll replace it. Why should they make a special case for you?

agreed - what where you trying to achieve? If you feel the "reported" issue of the hinge design is a serious fault then why would you consider purchasing this laptop at all?

Some ok deals here but Im betting there will be some better ones in December.
