From the bestselling novel by Stieg Larsson comes this gripping new thriller which will have you guessing until the end. Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared off the secluded island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger family. There was no corpse, no witnesses, no evidence. Nearly forty years later a journalist by the name of Mikael Blomqvist gets an unusual assignment. He’s contacted by Harriet’s uncle, Henrik Vanger, who wants him to find out what really happened to Harriet.

Mikael takes on the job, with help from mysterious biker girl and computer hacker Lisbeth Salander. This unlikely pair form a fragile bond as they dig into the sinister past of this family and find out just how far they're prepared to go to protect themselves - and each other.

This is the Swedish version with English subtitles. There is an English dubbed version (which is great!) but not at HMV. Or you could wait for the remake with Daniel Craig!

Why would you want to watch a dubbed film ?

Why would you want to watch a dubbed film ?
Have you never seen City of God? If not, you should and then you'll know why! :)

I'm sure I saw City of God with subtitles, not dubbed

Watched this on blu ray at the weekend. Normally subtitles dont bother me, maybe its just the way the film starts, but I had to switch to the english dubbed version after 5 minutes of watching. Not a bad film once it gets going.

Great film, no idea why the subtitles bother people but whatever floats your boat I guess.
#7
Haven't seen the film but the three books are brilliant!

because its a good film

Normally subtitled films are no problem and I saw this and it was fantastic. However, the subtitles in this can be very annoying at times as they are in white throughout and during several important conversations are blanked out against white backgrounds depending on what is in frame. I appreciate they weren't expecting the interest that this generated but they should have contrasted them to enable foreign audiences to follow every nuance. And this is a very nuanced film/book! Have to say though that the trilogy rapidly goes downhill after this wonderful installment.

I really enjoyed reading the three books and thought the film most enjoyable, despite the sub titles.

If there are white subs on the screen rather than in a 'letterbox' black area then that's a major problem -is that the case with this particular DVD print? I haven't seen bad subtitling like that since old bootleg copies, the odd Chinese DVD or cheap and nasty DVDs from years ago? Seems odd a high profile foreign film like this would be released in such a poorly subtitled DVD print?

This movie is so good that David Fincher is remaking for people who don't like subtitles.

all three movies are great, the first is the best, but the other two are also excellent and follow the first story, so it's like one long story like the matrix trilogy or lord of the rings. the subtitles didn't bother me, but i can change the colour and positioning by streaming them. i was so engrossed in the story the sub's didn't bother me

there's also a tv series but i've not seen it. david fincher is one of my favourite directors so i'm looking forward to seeing his remake

what's interesting is that the guy who wrote the books died a few years ago, so had all these ideas of things that are only now becoming common place, the movies take place in 2008/2009 ish and the tech used is readily available now, but wasn't when the books were written, and even when he died they weren't readily available. it's not a tech fest, but the main character is a hacker. it's just a great trilogy of thrillers. it's pretty strong too, not ultraviolence like hostel or saw, but pretty brutal at times, it's not for the kiddies to watch

The TV series is actually the films split into 6 episodes with a few added scenes. Or rather the second and third films are 4 TV episodes edited into 2 films as that is how they were originally made. This becomes apparent when you see the different pacing and atmosphere between them and the first film.

Great film as are the other two in the trilogy. The subtitles are fine , dont know why people want to watch dubbed versions they always remind me of 60's-70's martial arts films and create and instant loss of atmosphere.
