really, really badly written.

If you need a book to prove to you that God doesn't exist then I suggest the Bible.

Can get them free I've heard.
#6
Just finished it last night funnily enough!

Really enjoyed it, would recommend it to anyone who has the slightest doubts that there is something not quite right with the idea of religion and god.

@OP, its a good price but only worthwhile if you are already ordering other items and can get free supersaver delivery.

Sorry but thats a flawed arguement. The bible is an EDITED edition that the church choose to release to the public. Who knows what else they have in their vaults?;-)

I don't think there is anything hidden away in the vaults that could be considered to better prove the existense of god than what is already in the current (edited) bible.

Otherwise why would it not have been included in the first place?

Dawkins mentions in the God Delusion one of the books that didn't make the final cut of the bible, it told the story of Jesus as a child using his powers to trick people and have a laugh at their expense.

But how does he know? Does he have access to the archives or did he just make it up to sell his book  As to why anythings not included, that business, don't tell the customers the whole truth or they'll go with your cheaper competitor

For a more balanced (ok more amusing) view, watch Penn & Teller Bullsh*t season 2 episode 6 : The bible, fact or fiction

Just curious. I meet loads of people that ridicule the Bible. But when I ask them none of them have read it from start to finish. If it is a load of rubbish, to my knowledge no-one has ever proved it a fake. As the most read book in history, if there were facts to disprove its prophecies and historical information, I haven't seen it. I would challenge those that ridicule it to give it a chance. If it is only a made up book, you have nothing to fear by reading it. You'd be through it in a few months and if you still think it is rubbish, at least you are then in a position to say so.

You're working back to front. Scientific principle dictates that they don't have to prove it fake, you have to prove it real. If you state a claim that 'this is the word of god' you need to back it up. End of. Of course you can't as all religeon is based on faith rather than fact. Scientology anyone?

To counter your argument, I meet loads of people who believe in the bible, but who of them has every read anything that has told them otherwise. Not many, because they don't want to.

There is reams and reams and reams of information on the amount of false information in the bible, most of it should be glaringly obvious. E.g. Noah. How did he get two of every living thing on the ark, there are millions of different species of insects, how did he collect all of these and manage to keep them living on the ark for months!

Some good books for you to read if you want to see how strong your faith is:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wrote-Bible-Richard-Elliott-Friedman/dp/0060630353/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1200599493&sr=1-1

And also, yes I have read the bible. I was brought up on the bible, and since the age of 10 i've found it utterly ridiculous and completely unbelieveable!
#20
samc, fair enough. If you have read it and disagree with it, your opinion is as important as mine, and I honestly do respect it. The difficulty I have is with people who scoff at the Bible as a load of rubbish but have never actually read it. If someone started talking about the Koran, I wouldn't just scoff at it because I don't really know what it says. Do you see where I coming from?

Ah the words of J. But not of Jah. Odd that somebody with the graven image of a rasta legend for an avatar would use that quote. Bit of a mixed message there;-)

What about all the christians who haven't read Darwin yet immediately dismiss evolution?

And just because you can't prove something is false, doesn't make it true by default. In fact, things work in the opposite way, you have to prove something is true, not prove it is false.

Don't be sillly. Obviously the fact that this story makes no sense means your not supposedly to take it literally. The theologians get to pick and choose which stories are real and which are only a metaphor - Its one of the advantages of ignoring reason and logic and basing everything on faith :giggle:

I'm not a particularly religious person, but I find the whole idea that you either have to believe in Science or God to be very narrowminded.

"Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind." - Albert Einstien

Even Charles Darwin, who originally intended to become a priest but then lost faith when his daughter died, was a theist whilst he was writing "On the Origin of the Species"
#27
I agree with Mike. Believing in God doesn't mean you can't believe in Science. I have seen plenty of scientific facts that support creation. It is not the case that there are no scientific arguments for creation. With reference to biff's statement that the story of Noah and the flood is not to be taken literally and this means Christians pick and choose with is real and what is a metaphor, the mainstream Christian thinking is that the flood is real. I am no way an expert on this, but my memory is that Noah took 2 animals of certain types and 7 of other types i.e. dogs. They could then cross breed afterwards to create the different breeds. I remember reading years ago how someone showed that if this was done and young animals were taken on board the ark, they could all fit. Therefore, illogical as it may seem to many, it can still be explained in scientific terms. Any thoughts?

Thanks Shengis. Just watched Part 2. Just so that I get this straight - Penn & Teller states that there are records that a flood happened and killed several people. Therefore the Biblical story of a flood covering the earth can't be true. Is that it? These guys are obviously trying to discredit the flood with the best scientific evidence they have to hand, and the best they can do is show a boat capsizing with plastic animal toys on it. I'm more convinced about the flood than before I watched the video if that is the best info there is to discredit it LOL.
#30
Phil, you have to watch it from the beginning to see the point they're trying to make. Or you could read this, as it basically says the same thing : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noah\s_Ark#Mesopotamian_flood_stories

Yes it sounds very illogical, but i am too lazy to try to research who developed that theory and if it is scientifically plausible, so i will assume its possible just to prove my next point.

If that did happen then why does it not say that in the Bible? It's been a long time since my Sunday School years but i am pretty sure it just says he took 2 of every type of animal to repopulate the earth, no mention of cross breeding with dogs or anything else. Surely if it happened the way you suggested, all knowing god would have known that and the word of god (bible) would reflect what truely happened.

Why do Christians dismiss perfectly valid scientific theories because they disagree with their faith, yet when a bit of science comes along that may prove something biblical is true, they are more than happy to use this particular peice of evidence! Its double standards in my eyes.

Heres a funny one for you all. Religeon in the most unlikely of places. Ever thought of Alcoholics Anonymous as a religeous cult? Google their 12 step plan. Bloody stuff gets everywhere.

biff. It does say that they went into the ark in 2's and 7's. Genesis Chapter 7 verse 2 "You shall take with you seven of every clean animal, a male and his female; two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female; also seven each of birds of the air, male and female, to keep the species alive on the face of the earth."

The reference to the different kinds of animal comes in Genesis Chapter 7 verse 14 "they and every beast after its KIND, all cattle after their KIND, every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its KIND, and every bird after its KIND, every bird of every SORT.

Just one other point; did you know that all modern ships are designed based on the dimensions of the Ark, therefore if someone made the story up over 3000 years ago, they had great insight into the dimensions of a ship. Hundreds of things are like that right through the Bible. If someone wrote the old testament 3000 years ago and wasn't the world's expert on ship building, geography, disease, history, law, the list could go on all day, then people today would be jumping all over the errors saying things like 'if you built a ark to those dimensions it wouldn't float.

Please don't take what I am saying aggressively, I am just giving my point of view. As I said before, your opinion is as important as mine
#35
So how big do you reckon this ark to be?

By the way, theres another post on here for a free movie Zeitgeist. I wasn't going to download it but then I saw this : http://zeitgeistmovie.com/transcript.htm

Now I want to see exactly what their take is on it......

Dimensions of the ark (Gen 6: 15) are approx 150m long by 25m wide by 15m high.

He wouldn't fit it all in then, at least not alive. Can't be bothered to do the maths on it but it's 'estimated' that there are between 5 and 100 million different species of animal (Source). Talk about sardines in a tin. Maybe somebody with more time could work out how much space each would get. How long did this flood last, food storage is also a consideration.

Tbh I can't believe i'm even getting into this, working out the logistical problems of Noah
