Amazing classic horror film, how horror should be - none of this Saw 3D cr*p!... Same price at HMV.

"An evil old house, the kind some people call haunted, is like an undiscovered country waiting to be explored. Hill House had stood for 90 years and might stand for 90 more. Silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House and whatever walked there, walked alone."

Thus begins one of the most chilling, most frightening, truly unforgettable horror films ever. Dr. Markway is an anthropologist with a special interest in psychic phenomena who wants to try a true exercise in terror. Intrigued by the legend of Hill House, he invites two women, psychic researchers, to join him in his adventure. Mrs. Sammerson, who has inherited the old mansion, is suspicious of Dr. Markway's intentions and insists that her young nephew Luke go along with the group. Luke is a skeptic about the supernatural, until he enters Dr. Markway's eerie world...

Best haunted house film ever, and amazingly made by the director Robert Wise between West Side Story and The Sound of Music!

The actual building is just outside Stratford-on-Avon, and now a hotel, should you wish to spend the night………

I LOVE this film too. Despite being B/W, its incredibly well shot, sharply scripted and sends plenty of genuine shivers down the spine. A lesson to the Hollywood idiots who keep throwing blood at their casts without generating any suspense at all.

I also like the undercurrent level of ambiguity that eventually makes all the chills multilayered (a bit like The Others, The Orphanage).

Superb movie, and has that atmosphere very few horror films have matched since.

All-ime classic of the genre, still holds its own decades later.

What's wrong with films made in black and white, can be just as good as any film made in colour.

First rule of good horror, and torture for that matter oO, don't let 'em see what the fear is.
