Amazon.co.uk Review : At first glance, The Host looks like any other monster movie--an amphibious creature from the depths stalks and devours an urban population--but there's actually much, much more going on beneath the surface. Not that there needs to be: although it has a fairly hefty 119-minute runtime, The Host is fast moving, with plenty of action and a truly gruesome-looking monster. Visually, it's a gorgeous movie, with stunning special effects and beautiful settings (even the rather nasty sewer scenes look perversely great). However, the real crux of The Host isn't really anything to do with the monster: at heart, this is a family drama, not a horror movie. The story focuses on one small family and how they react to the weird goings-on all around them. When the youngest member of the family, Hyun-seo, is snatched by the titular monster, the family is devastated until a call from her mobile phone gives them fresh hope. Unfortunately, everyone who came into contact with the being has been quarantined due to a virus scare, so they have to escape the Korean authorities to go on a rescue mission. Then the American army steps in, and all hell breaks loose... It's a very original idea, with nuanced and well-written characters, plenty of humour, and a darker undercurrent of social and political commentary, topped off with a thrilling monster-killing adventure. Brilliant, in other words. --Sarah Dobbs

I was really disappointed by this film. Watched it when it was on Sky Movies recently and there was no suspense, scares or much action. Good visuals in parts but a big let down otherwise. Great price though so voted hot.

I thought it was one of the best films I have seen in years, it actually made me cry at one point too and that doesn't happen very often.

Yeah that was the part that made me cry I think.

The subs on the version of this that I saw were in UK English as well so it's slightly easier to get the feel of it than the standard US English ones.

I think the real joy of this film are the characters and that the heroes are just about as far from stereotypical movie heroes as you can get. Seeing a normal* (to the point of being dull) family deal with the extraordinary situation was really refreshing.

*notwithstanding the Olympic level archer aunt!

And for anyone put off by subtitles then I believe that Meet The Spartans is out on DVD soon - so hang on in there! :p :-D

There are some excellent Korean films out there to watch, and this is one of them.

Though some people are not happy that it doesnt totaly scare the pants off them, the film has a much greater depth to it (commom with the Korean film industry) than the standard drivel we get from america, and is well worth seeing.

reviews here (and a pretty good average score)

I thought it was great. Way, way better than Cloverfield, which owes a lot to it. Bear in mind it's very much a monster movie rather than a horror movie, so expect entertainment rather than scares. And how many monster movies eschew the long build up for a full on rampaging monster in full view within about fifteen minutes. Great characters, very bizarre humour in places.

The Host was the most popular film in Korea. I really enjoyed it.

I LOVE Korean Films (Oldboy, Bittersweet Life, Chingoo aka Friend, S.F. Mr Revenge, S. F Lady Vengence, Brotherhood of War to name a few classics)
However I was very dissapointed with the host as in my opinion it's all whats wrong with a lot of hollywood films these days, they should stick too doing what they do best and thats gritty REAL Korean films!!
