Harry Patch, 110 years old, is the last British soldier alive to have fought in the trenches of the First World War. From his vivid memories of an Edwardian childhood, the horror of the Great War and fighting in the mud during the Battle of Passchendaele, working on the home front in the Second World War and fame in later life as a veteran, The Last Fighting Tommy is the story of an ordinary man's extraordinary life.

This inspirational man, Harry Patch passed away July this year....

Lovely man, lived in Wells only a few miles from me. My wife had the honour of meeting him shortly before he died. I think I'll but the book for her.

A lot of people should buy this book if only to realise what men like him did for us as a whole .

Brave men one & all who fought in both World Wars for freedom .

By the way , nice find & ordered .

A great present for my son at Christmas. We cannot thank Harry and his "mates" enough for all they did for us. Never to be forgotten

An absolute bargain for a book that everyone should read.

I'm not ashamed to say it reduced me to tears.

God Bless Harry.

As a person who has served in a conflict I agree with all the sentiments above. This is a great book but if you get the chance to read a book called "Somme Mud" it is a first hand account of life in the trenches actually recorded during the war and is an outstanding and sombering read.

Would be a hot deal even if it was £30 if the money was going to the poppy appeal.

Good book - and gives a real insight into life back then....not just the war.

You imagine that they were all keen to join up and do their bit for King and country, but the reality was probably more that they were terrified, just wanted to carry on living a normal life (Harry was hacked off it ******ed up his apprenticeship if I remember it right) and the last thing they wanted to do was go and fight. Which makes what they did all the more remarkable really.

Books like this should be on the curriculum.

Books like this should be on the curriculum.

They really should, I remember my history lessons (more like a doss lesson) and anything to do with WWII was incredibly boring, since leaving school I've come to really enjoy reading about WW1/2 and there are so many fantastic stories out there.

No, that's not it, neither war was about "freedom", Harry Patch hated war and the futility of war and the way our leaders set innocent men against innocent men to serve their own ends, not ours. And still it continues.

Quote from Harry:

"...if any man tells you he went over the top and he wasn't scared, he's a damn liar." In the 'World War 1 In Colour' series, he reflected upon his lost friends and the moment when he came face to face with a German soldier. He recalled Moses descending from Mount Sinai with God's commandment, 'thou shalt not kill', and couldn't kill the German. Instead, he shot him in the shoulder, which made him drop his rifle. But he carried on running towards Patch's Lewis Gun, so he then shot him above the knee, and in the ankle. Patch said, "I had about five seconds to make the decision. I brought him down, but I didn't kill him."

Great man, buy this book.
