Chilling ghost story produced by Guillermo del Toro. Laura (Belen Rueda) has fond memories of the orphanage she grew up in. She was well cared for by the staff and she loved her fellow orphans like they were her own flesh and blood. Thirty years later, accompanied by her husband Carlos (Fernando Cayo) and her 7-year-old son Simon (Roger Princep), she returns to her childhood home with a dream of restoring the now abandoned orphanage and reopening it as a home for disabled youngsters. However, it's not long before Simon starts communicating with an invisible new friend and telling strange stories. Carlos is skeptical of his son, believing that he is just seeking attention. Then Simon disappears without trace...

It is a great film but i think you should point out its not in ENGLISH... Its either subtitled or dubbed.. the original is Spanish.....
#5
I am very tempted to pick this up! :P

Am working my way through de Torro's films - so far have seen Pan's Labarynth, The Devil's Backbone and Hellboy 1. Pan's and the Devil's are absolutely brilliant, Hellboy is a bit silly, but v. entertaining (but is supposed to be) Highly recommend them and will check out the Orphanage. Good post.

You kidding me?

Most of the UK population under 30 can't seem to speak a simple sentence correctly (unless it's along the lines of 'Big Mac, fries and a large coke.')

So getting them to actually read subtitles whilst watching a movie is probably much too big an ask.

Only watched this a couple of days ago, great film. Watched it on a quality LCD with surround sound in the dark. This film definitely makes use of the blu-ray and surround sound, couldn't switch the lights on fast enough! Highly recommended to show off the blu-ray.

agreed, this is a excellent film, one of my favourite horrors.

Many thanks

Can't wait to hear this one in glorious DTS HD Master audio! 10/10 I read in some reviews :)

It's only produced by Del Toro, though the way it was marketed, you'd hardly believe otherwise.

I watched this the other week on Blu Ray and it is an utterly fantastic movie. It does share a few similariites to Del Toro's work, but I found it to be a lot better than Pans Labyrinth, and the ending.......well, I don't want to spoil anything, but it's good. The acting is brilliant, and it's shot beautifully.

My favourite horror movie of all time.
#18
As already said Guillermo del Toro presents/produces this and nothing else!
But unlike Tarantino he has backed a winner here!
Great film but whoever said it's better than Pans Lab needs there head checking!!! (jk ;-) )

Superb Spanish film, must see imho, but not a masterpiece like Pans Lab.

I second that! Pans Labyrinth is awesome!

Best Film I've seen in 5 Years.

Anyone who won't watch this due to subtitles, well, thier loss.

Oh go on then, you twisted my arm.... I've been wanting to see this for ages, it's on my LoveFilm rental list but I may as well purchase if it really is THAT good!!.... Heat + Rep Added

Seems I'm the only one here that though this film was utter drivel. I sat an watched this with my aunt who said it came highly reccomended. Both of us found it slow and I had already guessed the ending halfway through. It reminded me instantly of the film The Others (which I enjoyed more). That said if you enjoy films which are easily gussible and that aren't scary, like The Sixth Sense then you'll probably enjoy watching this.

Just from the title it is possible to predict a fair bit of the basic plot. But it is very well acted and highly atmospheric.

You say you had predicted the ending? Which ending? One of the things I found most frightening about the film was the ambiguity and variety of possible explanations of the various plot points and ending.

There are several interpretations of the film, some considerably more disturbing than others.

This is a great psychological horror film, that I was lucky to see shortly after release in Spain, with subtitles. Had no problem becoming engrossed in the film while reading the subtitles.

Watched this last night highy recommended viewing.

You can't really compare this with Pan's Labyrinth because they're so different.

Don't watch PL thinking it's a horror movie! Like I did. Because you will be disappointed :P

This is a really great movie. Definitely worth it.

Has anyone here actually received their order? Mine was confirmed at the time I ordered, but subsequently shows as 'order not accepted'. Explanation from DVDsource was pretty cryptic:

Hello,

Unfortunately we received corrupt product information.

The products have now been corrected, but as they were incorrect we have
been unable to accept you order.

Apologies for any disappointment.

Best regards,

Leigh.

On the strength of this, I'm not inclined to order again from them. :x

Mine says order not accepted too!! However you've done better than me and actually got a resonse from them, i've sent 3 emails over the last 2 weeks a not had a single response... Don't think i'll be using them again, poor customer service and their website looks like it was designed by a 3 year old!! I wouldn't be supprised if they get credit crunched very soon!
