:) IF HMV has reduced a lot of their films to £3.99, Trend will indicate All other retailers to follow.
Lets just say the inside gossip is to dump the stock ASAP!! :)

Am I missing something: I thought the idea of HD was that picture quality is pin sharp?

depends on the quality of the original that is used , some transfers are better than others,
TBH the quality is still going to be good , yet to see a rubbish quality HD DVD

Film 'grain' is something that even the most modern films have in the master copy as its put there on purpose by the director for atmospheric and style reasons. Its nothing to do with the quality of a transfer to HD, if its there in the original its gonna be there in HD.

most of my hd dvd films have grain on them - the picture isnt perfect but its a damn site bettter than dvd

grain annoyed me a lot to start with. i thought my ps3 was faulty but it's all meant to be there it just that HD makes it much more visable than with SD.

There seem to be some informed posters here with some good truth nuggets:

the gist is that some grain is inherent in filming something on film, some is enhanced to give it a more "filmy" look. If you want something that looks good in HD with no grain then grab some nature ( galapogos : my jaw hit the floor, planet earth : very good ). One film which i thought had an amazing HD pic with minimal grain was Apocalypto - helluva 5.1 track too
