Back by popular demand, The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition faithfully re-imagines the internationally-acclaimed classic game (originally released in 1990) for original and new audiences alike. The development team at LucasArts is bringing the game into the modern era with an all new re-imagined contemporary art style, a re-mastered musical score, full voiceover, and an in-depth hint system to help players through the games side-splitting puzzles. Purists will also delight in the ability to seamlessly switch between the updated hand-drawn re-imagining and the original classic version.

The game's twisty plot leads our naive hero on a hilarious, swash-buckling search for the fabled secret of Monkey Island. Tales of pirate wealth lure him to the port of M?e with high hopes, no money, and insatiable curiosity. If clever enough, he will win the confidence of M?e's pirates and find himself blown by the winds of fate toward the terrifying and legendary Monkey Island -- an adventure that would chill the bones of even the most bloodthirsty buccaneer.

Relive the swashbuckling humorous misadventures of the wannabe pirate Guybrush Threepwood

i LOVE the monkey island series, and have already purchased this one from steam when it was released at 6pm on the 15th. i will say this, it is a remake of an old game, and is worth £6.99, but i would not stretch to much more than that. hot from me, all the same.

if you havent had a chance to play the 1st monkey island game in the series, then, now is the time to find out what your missing.

Awesome :-D

I'm slightly upset they've remastered the soundtrack, though. Won't be the same without the MIDI.
#3
Hot! just because I love monkey island :p
And I agree a 100% with you phonetic!!!

Amazing.

Is this available in any other format, or am I gonna have to install Win-d'ohs on my Mac?

Great game!

Yes, this is a great game, but which part of this is a deal?? Is it cheaper than elsewhere or something?

The game was inspired by the awesome pirate adventure 'On Stranger Tides' by Tim Powers, which you can read about by the game's creator here ... http://grumpygamer.com/6476640 ... I can't recommend the book highly enough

Isn't there a HD version coming out fairly soon?
#11
Added heat for the price.
Having seen the trailer, I'm not sure I like the character voices (guess it's like reading a book then being disappointed with the actor choice in the film version thou!), but the new graphics look great.
As you can seemlessly switch between the orginal and this new version, it's a must for fans IMO!

This is HD.

There is also Tales of Monkey Island which is a brand new episodic adventure!.. It's not on XBLA though. Only PC and.. Wii! :?

Loved this on the Amiga - one of my favourite games of all time.
Has anyone tried running this on a Mac via BootCamp, Parallels or VMWare emulation?
#19
I will buy it and pass it on to the next generation...they don't make them like this any more.

Whatever happened to 'point and click' adventure games like this. I loved them.

They dissapeared for a while, but now they're back with Telltale games, you should really check them out if you want to get your adventure game fix :)

I've been quite enjoying the first episode of Tales of Monkey Island, so worth fans giving that a go as well (there is a demo available to try it out first)
Doesn't work on my Samsung NC10 thou (doesn't start up and it seems many other people are having the same problem :x)

I'm currently playing TOMI on Bootcamp with XP, runs fine if you turn the graphic detail down a bit. I'll try SOMI tonight I think!

Despite being a massive fan, this isn't really a deal is it, just the standard price of the game.

Cold from me I'm afraid. If I wanted to be kept aware of release dates I'd check Eurogamer or something of similar ilk.

to me the old graphics and midi sound were all part of the experience, i really hated monkey island 3/4 - the guybrush didn't look right!

good for getting the current generation interested in the classics though

You can switch between the old graphics and the new graphics at the press of a button. It is instantaneous.

Also, the new graphics in this game aren't really anything like MI4 obviously, but fairly closed to MI3. I started playing this last night, I think it's really well done.

Didn't look right, didn't sound right, turned into a complete and total gimp. He becomes infinitely less attractive to the opposite sex and suddenly his relationship with Elaine. She wasn't that into him in the first 2 games, how they could miss that important point. The characters and plot became a shallow excuse for rubbish jokes. Bad fan fiction that's all it is. Same thing happened to Red Dwarf when Rob Grant left. Monkey Island WAS Ron Gilbert, lets hope he left enough of an impression on the new games from the 6 hours he was invited to spend helping them.

You can't get it anywhere else, only on Steam and XBLA, hence my cold vote. If you knew it was out, you'd be restricted as to where you could get it in the first place. Unless there was a promotional code or something, this shouldn't be a deal.
#31
I'll wait till its in the iTunes store. :whistling:

No, for some bizzare reason they appear to have only released it on steam. Hopefully it'll be coming to the less restrictive digital download services like GamersGate, Impulse and gog.com in the near future.

They just dropped out of the mainstream, there were always plenty around if you went looking for them.

XBLA - Xbox Live Arcade
Steam - Steam is a digital distribution, digital rights management, multiplayer and communications platform developed by Valve Corporation. It is used to distribute a wide range of games and related media entirely over the internet, stretching from one-man independent efforts to some of the world's most popular games. Steam is set apart from its peers in terms of functionality primarily by its residency in the system tray, and the desktop tasks that the client software performs to make use of that position.

They're content delivery tools for downloading games.

!?!

Put it in the 'old' mode then. It's exactly the same! :?:?

I dont understand how anyone can complain about this, you have the old sounds and old version at the press of a button and new version with gorgeous graphics and new score and dialogue and all for 6.99. An amzing game and well worth replaying. If you havent played it you really are missing out. I havent used steam before but it was very straight forward. I dont see what the problem is.

I wholeheartedly agree, as someone that grew up in the generation of video gaming on 8, 16 and 32 Bit Commodore 64s, Amigas, then PCs, I adored point and click adventures.

The user base of SCUMM is immense, showing there is still much love for these adventures, of which Lucasarts produced some of the best scripted ones.

To me, the makeover is delightful, from the old Amiga 32 colour, or PC and MAC 256 colour ports to the new look, not only does this preserve the original game, but introduces it to a new generation of video gamers.

I really would like to see Monkey Island 2, Day Of The Tentacle, Sam and Max, Full Throttle, Indiana Jones Fate Of Atlantis etc etc etc all have this makeover..also a enhanced Grim Fandango and a follw up would be amazing.

With Revolution softwares Broken Swod series getting the makeover recently on the Wii, would also be great to see their efforts getting this makeover too, Lure Of The Temptress and Beneath The Steel Sky (imagine enhanced Dave Gibbons backdrops on that!)

Also not forgetting Westwood Studios (whoever owns the rights now) Legend Of Kyrandia series too.

A renewed interest, and a new generation of gamer into point and click adventures can never be a bad thing, whether or not those feel the makeover to be disappointing...,,and then with either SCUMM or an old Amiga you can still play the originals.

I personally have installed MI on my little Aspire Netbook, and it runs great!.

If anyone is old enough to remember the old days of LucasArts, this talk by David Fox is long but fascinating on Youtube, worth watching http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHz7LT10jL0&feature=related

No idea, but I was always a fan of the broken sword series. Me and a friend spent hours playing those when we were kids.
