Do they actually find the original film rolls, clean them and re-digitise it in HD resolution?

Or are these just an upscaled DVDs?

..oh ya... heat added - great movie!

Yes, these are fully HD resolution movie. This is far better quality than upscaling.

Very good film. Good price, was there anything else there?
#6
No, it was the only Blu-ray at that price. (there was one other copy too at the same price)

It might be a mis-price (it scanned up as "DVD - £7.00") but if that was the case, how come there are two copies at that price? And both stickered?

Probably clearance.

Probably. I have to admit, I couldn't actually believe it. (it was hidden in a red cardboard stand with loads of other DVDs that I presume were clearance)

Might have to fork out the money for a Blueray player some day then. Would love to see some of the old movies in all their glory.

It's not again forum rules, however, to post items in they have been featured in a larger overall sales thread. Particularly since your thread did not hit the front page and was posted in the wrong section. You certainly didn't particularly highlight the Blu-ray in your post especially.

Asda entertainment clearance ps3/xbox360/wii games/blurays/dvd`s

FOUND BY: SpecialK 1 week, 4 days ago

STARTS: 05/03/2009 EXPIRES: 05/04/2009

went into asda southbank this morning and they had a huge selection of reduced games/dvd`s and some blurays.i bought planet earth dvd box set for £10 and shawshank redemption on bluray for £7.someone has mentioned buying tomb raider on ps3 for £19 in asda and this was one of the many deals in this store so it could well be a national clearance in all stores to make way for new titles as they tend to do this every few weeks when games drop out of their charts.please post any deals into this thread rather than having numerous asda threads cheers

I read the thread, SpecialK, when you posted it ten minutes ago. Like I said, if someone posts a sale like that (e.g. HMV sale), it is not uncommon for other posters to post their own threads containing some of the very best deals within that sale. By posting this by itself, it certainly got it more noticed than it did when it was in your thread.

If a mod unexpires this, I will at least give you a partial credit for finding it.

Will it be ? I have Goodfellas on HD-DVD and the quality is terrible
#21
I tend to agree with the double post. But Special that was a shocking post. People couldn't obviously be bothered reading it. Didn't sell itsself!

No hard feelings
#22
SpecialK - no need to have a pop at the OP, your 'deal' was about as useful as just writing "I went shopping the other day and saw some cheap things ..."

Fantastic movie.

Hot!!

Not bad for £7 but the soundtrack on the UK version of this disc is just plain old Dolby Digital 5.1, which is fine if you're happy with that. The US version (posted in a link earlier) has the proper TrueHD sound codecs, so, for me, i'll wait till that version makes it to these shores.

Goodfellas was not perfect but the HD-DVD was far better than the DVD picture wise, not so much of an improvement with the audio though.

I got the UK release and its one disc I wouldn't be bothered about having a HD soundtrack on, no action scenes in the movie at all and well worth £7 if you can find it for that price.

its not a misprice, on play.com its only £9.99 and amazon its the same as well....

its bizzarre, its a great film yet no matter what format or version this film comes on its never at some silly £15 dvd price or £18 Blu ray price..

They rescan them from film stock.

The quality depends on how good the scan is and how good the quality of the print (negative!) that they scan them from is I presume! If you read the tech reviews of DVD releases some of them complain about the quality of the HD transfer for certain releases. Any analogue to digital conversion is a fairly delicate process and over time the technicians get better at it. The same thing happened with CDs whereby sometimes the original CD release was poor grade due a number of reasons:

The transfer wasn’t made from the first generation master tape.
The equipment used wasn’t optimal.
The technicians weren’t up to speed with the process.

I imagine the same thing will have happened with some Blu-ray discs and certain films will be remastered and a cleaner version will be released in the future.

I would hope that after 10 plus years of mastering DVDs the process would be nailed down. For the older movies it all depends on how much money is thrown at the DVD/BluRay transfer.

But we’re talking here about HD (Blu-ray) transfers so the process is still fairly new!

We're talking about the mastering of print to digital, irrelevant of the final output resolution. When they first make a master transfer they actually have an uncompressed, higher than HD resolution digital copy. They actually lower the resolution for DVD and BluRay and introduce the huge compression necessary for digital media. Unless they're remastering the print again for BluRay (in most cases not) they use the same digital master for the BluRay copy.

Thanks for the heads-up on that. Where do you get your information from as I’m curious to know a bit more?
It probably explains why some HD releases have been criticised for the video quality. If the original uncompressed transfer wasn’t handled very well back in the past then there’s only so much that can be done when mastering to Blu-ray.

O/T but i get rubbish sound from my 360 HD-DVD player.

I;'ve got a 7.1 amp fed through optical, but the 360 HD-DVD drive chucks out 's practically 2.1. I say practically, because there is a faint noise coming out of the surround speakers if you put your ear right up to them.

Games are fine, they're in 5.1 and my PS3 and Sky output surround, so why not that drive ?

Yes i have googled and i even rang Microsoft themselves, but all they say is try it on a different one, well i haven't got a different one!

Just been to Asda blu ray section at Cwmbran branch. No Shawshank for £7. Cheapest offers were 2 for £20.

I had the drive myself and the best it could do iirc was Dolby Digital 5.1 and it sounded ok at that, you might need to change the audio settings on the XBOX dashboard.
#37
Bought this from HMV for £8 a few months back. It maybe the film or the transfer to blu ray but it looked no different to the DVD I have. (Loved the film have it on VHS, DVD and Blu-ray now). I stopped it half way through as was v disappointed that it didnt look any better. Wouldnt bother if you have the DVD version.

(this is based on playing it on a PS3)
#38
Was this on a standard television? You wouldn't notice any difference if that is the case.

It's already on DD 5.1 on the dashboard. When i googled some people said choose DTS from the Audio menu, but it's not on there and MS said DTS isn't an option it just does that automatically.

It's doing my head in coz i bought a shedload of HD-DVDs on the cheap from HMV and none of them sound good at all tbh

I always find watching blurays on my ps3 really good on a non HD telly. In fact thats what I bought them for :p

No really , this is a PS3 connected to a Samsung 42 inch Full HD which plays all my other blurays including Planet Earth in stunning HD. Oh and its also connected to the power as well
