Set in a tough LA neighbourhood populated by gangsters, immigrants, hookers, pimps and pushers, The Shield is the story of an inner city LA Police precinct, where Detective Vic Mackey (Chiklis) leads a corrupt, but highly effective Strike Team against paedophiles, necrophiliacs, white racist serial killers and gang beatings. In a tough, morally ambiguous world, the line between good and bad is crossed every day.

Uhoh. I see the W-word. Approach it like The Wire crossed with 24 to appreciate it fully.

Sounds good love The Wire the Sopranos and Mad Men, however I thought that 24 was fantasy nonsense just like Lost and Xfiles.

Been a few series of the shield now though - so should I start at series one or jump in at 3?

There are storylines that go through the whole series. I'd start with the first one, if only for the first episode twist. ;)

24 is fantasy nonsense, sure, but it does on occasion throw up a few moral dilemmas. Hence the comparison.

Surely a misprice but awesome if it is honoured!

BUY THIS!!! Buy the entire series - final one started on "quietly hidden" on Five USA last night.
#11
I really don't think you should be posting the final episode synopsis in a thread about season 1...
#12
yes, can ChapChap or mod delete the offending text or wrap it in a spolier tag?

Shield is awesome but the ending is just too heart breaking for me to watch this series again! lol

Well it'll be awhile before the last season is at a good price, so maybe I'll be ready to see it by then. It's still fascinating to look back at the earlier seasons though and think about where it all leads in the end. Never saw it coming back then!

For anyone who hasn't seen this it is a fantastic series. On par with The sopranos.

Some say " What would Jesus do". Others say "What would Jack do". I say "What would Vik Mackey do"

24 was excellent for 2 and a half seasons. You only get close to Jack's character, pretty much because everyone around him dies.

In the shield they develop characters over a number of series and the climax to every season is awesome!

Favourite season is season 5. Forest Whitaker is awesome.

It's superior to The Sopranos because there are absolutely no poor episodes, i.e. no 'Johnny Cakes' moments. :-D

Agreed, chapchap's post should be removed by the mods. There is no place for a spoiler for a season that has just started in the UK - and especially on a HUKD board about season one.

The truth about this show is that it has never been about what is right and wrong. It's less obvious who the good guys and bad guys are. Much like in life. The creator more or less says this on one of the DVD extras. It was up to the viewer to decide who they liked and disliked. Hence why so many of the characters do things that surprise us. That's the whole point of The Shield, you just don't know what twist is coming next.

To rip apart a show based entirely on it's ending is as pathetic as those idiots who ripped apart The Sopranos for their ending. Most people are never happy with the ending of anything, such is life. One things for sure, The Shield will never be associated with a Disney ending.

No i do not agree. What i was pointing out was that this show is just too depressing, and becomes too unreasonable to watch, in the long run, so rather than waste money buying an expensive purchase, maybe people would like an idea of how this series goes ie very interesting at first but then just too,too much, and will not make you feel satisfied at spending possible 80-89 quid on watching something which becomes just too silly to watch.
That's all i was trying to say.
But yeah buy the first 5 series and enjoy.

I thought you had written "Most people are never happy with the ending of anything, such as life." :-D

As far as good guys/bad guys go, I tend to regard Dutch and Claudette as the good guys, and even Lem, despite being deep in Strike Team shenanigans, was hard to hate.

Don't buy or read the bible - he dies in the end.

Seriously I enjoyed the whole thing, can you remove your spoiler post please?
