I've never actually seen an episode myself but I've heard good things.

The Shield was about an experimental division of the Los Angeles Police Department set up in the fictional Farmington district ("the Farm") of Los Angeles, using a converted church ("the Barn") as their police station, and featuring a group of detectives called the Strike Team who will stop at nothing to bring their version of justice to the streets. Michael Chiklis has top billing with his portrayal of Strike Team leader Vic Mackey. The show has an ensemble cast and usually runs a number of separate story lines through each episode.

Detective Vic Mackey was the leader of the Strike Team, a four-man anti-gang unit based on the Los Angeles Police Department's real-life Rampart Division CRASH unit (Rampart was seriously considered as the series name and was even used in some early promotional ads for the series[4]). The Strike Team uses a variety of illegal and unethical methods to maintain peace on the streets, while making a profit through illegal drug protection schemes and robbery. The Strike Team isn't above planting drugs on and coercing confessions out of gang members or framing them. Attempts to give the team a fifth member have frequently led to near-catastrophe for the group.

The Shield has a variety of subplots, notably David Aceveda's political aspirations and internal confrontation of a sexual assault; Vic Mackey's struggle to cope with a failing marriage; Shane Vendrell's rocky, new marriage; and Julien Lowe's internal conflicts between his belief in the teachings of the Bible and his homosexuality.

Common themes are the citizens' distrust of police, the social impact of drugs and gang warfare, and the conflict between ethics and political expediency. Most characters are portrayed as having both vice and virtue. For example, Vic's loving relationship with his children contrasts with his thuggish approach to police work, although his brutality is generally directed at those who seem well-deserving of such treatment. For example, in Season 2, the Strike Team prepares to rob the "Armenian Money Train," a money laundering operation of the Armenian Mafia. Another episode had Mackey cornering a serial rapist, then letting him be mauled by a police dog before calling the dog off.

Possibly the best cop show/drama/action that so many have not seen.

So enjoyable to watch. if Jack Bauer & Chuck Norris ever had a fight Vic would be ref ! .

Excellent deal.

Superb series, brutal at times, fantastic story line.
Major heat.

Fantastic series with some great characters and story lines. Heat added.

Simply put - the best TV show in a very long time... not one weak episode, never faltered - not even once.

Major bargain at this price. There is a complete Seven Season set out but it's £99.99 (inc. a bonus disc to that release) but frankly at these prices I'd say buy now and if you REALLY love it, get the complete set when it's reduced, as I'm sure it will be. Season 7 will be on my radar, might even pay full price for it. LOVE IT!

Slightly unrealistic due to obvious lack of swearing in such an intense environment and the last series was a little disappointing for me.

That said, it was a great show and worth buying all these discs at twice the price!

The lack of swearing did bother me, I agree. Dealing with all sorts of undesirables, and nobody swears.

Some pretty brutal things happen to people, but nobody gets angry enough to say naughty words. The problem of course is the network it aired on, but in all honesty it doesn't detract from the show. Same with 24.

Easily in my top ten shows ever. It's up there with HBO's best.

If you haven't seen it, get it.

I don't get it, why can audiences "endure" stuff like face-burning on the stove and yet apparently would cower in a corner, frightened and confused, if those mens says bad wordz?

Good series, of course. The Wire trumps it but that doesn't mean it's not worth watching.

To be honest I never even noticed the lack of swearing, until you guys mentioned it :D

Simply the best series I have ever seen on TV , end of.

Echo that sentiment - people harp on about the Wire being the best show on tv and whilst I did love that, this still trumps it for me. Unmissable and everyone I've prattled on to about it is now well and truly converted

It is amazing, it is like no one knows about it, it is the only TV show I had to be in the right frame of mind to sit down and watch. The two favourites of mine at the Armenian Money Train and the Last Series, absolutely amazing, "The Wire" is very good but "The Shield" is in a different league!

Can't believe I didn't notice the lack of swearing :-0 Woah... weird!

Just goes to show what an absolutely top this is/was, better than the wire by country mile for me. Gonna buy series 1 for my mum of all people ;-)

It is weird, you start talking about TV then you say to someone do you watch "The Shield" and they start raving about it and you know you are not alone:oops:

I heard the last episode of season 5 was cut in the uk release? is this true? I want to make sure before I order.
#17
The only way to check would be to watch a streaming release US and then watch the UK?
#18
... deal on an excellent programme.

Aboot 25 minutes are cut from the uk version, which makes one season 6 secondary storyline seem slightly strange.
IIRC The uncut Australian version of season 5 can be ordered from cdwow though.

The Wire is superior to this --but its still a great show --must be as Family Guy parodied it --introducing Vic Mackeys brother --detective Scrote 'I got a problem with listenin!'

That's Ross Kemp on the cover surely?

The Wire is good but The Shield is better IMO.
Vic Mackey makes Dirty Harry look like PC Plum from Balamory.

I would have to disagree with you about being superior. Its just a different cop show. The wire was was kinda cool and laid back wheres the The Shield was in your face going at million miles an hour. Season 5 of The Wire was a bit boring and political for me and Season 7 of the shield was abit of an anti-climax. The Shield was my favourite, The Wire may have been a little bit better I wouldnt say superior though.
#25
The Wire was "police politics" , the Sheild was on the street "do whats needed" work.
Both good in their own right but not enough similarities to fairly compare.
#26
just my two cents' worth....

this show is as stunning as it is unrelentingly honest and violent. best drama i've ever come across. saw the first ep without knowing anything about it all and was hooked there and then. sometimes you just know that you've stumbled on something very special.
#27
Excellent TV show, and great price for the DVDs.

I've seen every episode of both the Shield and the Wire, and really liked them both, but the Shield is hands down the better program.
#28
I like the shield - I like the wire, but which one's best????

Anyhow - without spoiling this for anyone who has yet to see it. My biggest problem with the Shield is that in the very first episode Vic does something really bad - and it is totally out of step with anything he does in the later episodes. It makes no sense.

I guess it made the pilot episode stand out as a bit different, but it is not consistent with how he is in the later the later episodes.

I am on Series 4 at the moment.
