Awesomeness just awesomeness. Love this album.

Three years after his debut album (BURNING BLUE SOUL released in 1981), Matt Johnson resurrected the name The The, under which he had recorded an early single called "Controversial Subject", and unleashed SOUL MINING on the world. This was a far more polished affair than its predecessor, and also a more powerful statement of purpose.
Johnson's mission is to explore the seedier underbelly of his own psyche, which is "crippled by guilt and blinded by sense" (according to the album's opening track). Elsewhere, he addresses everything that is wrong with society, from consumerism to easy morality, but never repetitively and always with a slinky hook (often provided by the bass guitar). Highlights include "Uncertain Smile", featuring a subtle string section and a prominent, barreling piano, the album's title track, with an eerie guitar line and pulsing xylophone, and all nine-and-a-half minutes of the disturbingly funky "Giant". The best track, however, is "This Is the Day", a deceptively cheerful sounding song, complete with accordion, that takes a lyric like "this is the day your life will surely change" and makes the listener aware that these changes are unlikely to be good ones.

1. I've Been Waitin' For Tomorrow (All Off My Life)
2. This Is The Day
3. The Sinking Feeling
4. Uncertain Smile
5. The Twilight Hour
6. Soul Mining
7. GIANT

Jools Hollands piano solo on uncertain smile is my favorite bit of the album

Blimey this brings back memories - bought this on vinyl when it came out (still have it in the cupboard!). Taped it to listen to on my walkman, took it on a geography field trip & ended up using 'This is the day' as the soundtrack to a video we made (because I was the only one who had brought any cassettes!) Still sing it today! Now I feel really old (but will have to buy it anyway!)

timeless- even the 80s production values at times don't detract from this great album

while the follow up was good it never came near this
agree about jools holland-not often his piano adds to a song!

+1 for the Johnson. If you visit http://www.thethe.com - the radio cineola pieces are very, very good. Plus - there's a very good value soundtrack for the movie Tony.

Brilliant, just brilliant. Sounds wonderful on a great hi-fi.

Thanks for the memories, man.

I also loved Talk Talk and I wish I had an Audi TT. I think I'll stop now...

Fantastic album (second only to 'Infected') at a fantastic price! H&R :) [Edit: couldn't leave rep? Sorry]
However, unlike most folk I believe that Holland's piano break in 'Uncertain Smile' kinda drags after a while: he's a bit of a one-trick pony on the ivories really isn't he?

Quality music but make sure you're Infected as well.

Heat and Rrrrrree, hmmm, heat and thanks to Amdywedge for this and all the other great music deals.

Existentialist Blues.

Makes The Cure, Smiths, et al sounds positively joyful.

Excellent

Personally think that Soul Mining, Infected, Mind Bomb and Dusk remasters are all worth owning, all of them are fantastic.

So much so, Johnny Marr joined The The for a few years, he must have wanted the blues.

Potentially one of the greatest albums of the 80s. Took alot of strange substances listening to Matt.

Still gives me goosebumps when I put on any of the tracks from that album. Matt Johnson is a genius. Lost his way with Mindbomb (although still great in its own right) but regained it with Dusk.

Personally though Mind Bomb was better than Dusk, each to their own.

Personally, I only listen to Soulmining and Infected, maybe a bit of Mind Bomb - the rest is blah.

Good deal, voted hot.

Huge Matt Johnson fan, and have all teh original CDs (and vinyl from back in the day), but not the remasters - are they really worth it? I quite often find that I prefer the original recordings rather than remasters

Have to agree. Mind Bomb was the album to really catapult Matt, but it doesn't really take off... Like an egg burdened goose. And the rest... ****.
