This extraordinary, magical novel is the story of Clare and Henry who have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six, and were married when Clare was twenty-two and Henry thirty. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself pulled suddenly into his past or future. His disappearances are spontaneous and his experiences are alternately harrowing and amusing. The Time Traveler's Wife depicts the effects of time travel on Henry and Clare's passionate love for each other with grace and humour. Their struggle to lead normal lives in the face of a force they can neither prevent nor control is intensely moving and entirely unforgettable.

This was a book that my girlfriend was reading and I ended up reading out of severe boredom/slight curiosity.

Firmly in the category or 'womens book' I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the cute intricacies of the plot which came together to make a wholly entertaining story. It does suffer from the classic pitfall of over sentimentality but this could just be my prejudices, and for the price I can say this is a good deal.

:)

Oh the film is pretty poop compared to the book as per usual, the characters just seemed really poorly casted to me.

Excellent book. Not seen the film yet, and I am kind of reluctant to watch it as I have the suspicion it will never live up to the book. Anyway - hot

The book is well written, unlike most chick-lit I have read, and the characters do suffer from slightly rougher than normal troubles too. The film is a very good representation of the essence of the book without trying to squeeze every detail in. The ending is slightly different, although not so that it changes any outcomes.

I recommend the book to readers and I recommend that those who might never get around to reading it to just go and watch the film and enjoy it (hopefully).

Film as always not as good as the book. i found the book a lot rougher in every way. The film was more of a chick flick i thought but i liked it none the less.

Language was a bit choice sometimes in the book.

I have to disagree with everyone here. I read this a couple of years ago and hated it. It's very weak and the dialogue is beyond poor. I really don't understand it's success, although I don't understand the majority of current literary trends.

If I were to provide a quote for the cover it would be something like, 'A sci-fi soap opera'.

Thankyou for your literary insight, suffice to say I think you are in the minority with your criticism. What is weak about it? I think it is a complex and well written piece which Niffenegger succeeds brilliantly in holding together.

This is a given, which I clearly stated in my post above, 'I have to disagree with everyone here.'

The story, the characters and the dire soap-opera style dialogue. It's a very badly written story that just takes a slightly more interesting form than most of the dross that big publishers are shoving in our faces these days.

Complex and well written? Don't make me laugh.
