One of television's most critically acclaimed programmes, The Wire challenges viewers with a "cop show" unlike anything else on air.

The HBO series addresses the seedy side of Baltimore's finest looking into money, drugs, politics and murder. Told from the point of view of both the police and their targets, the series captures a universe of subterfuge and surveillance, where easy distinctions between good and evil, and crime and punishment, are challenged at every turn.

A study on urban life in one of America's toughest cities, each season of The Wire has focused on a different aspect of Baltimore, starting with the police force and the drug trade, then moving on to City Hall, the education system and concluding with the media. Over the course of five seasons, David Simon has endeavoured to build a city.

It is a groundbreaking, complex and political look at the streets of America, detailed and fiercely intelligent; there is no other show like it on TV.

It's still cheaper to buy seasons 1-4 from bangcd at £9.99 each.

Yep. And Season 5 is available in serveral places for £15.

£55 total. And it'll take up less space because the Ones from bangcd are smaller boxes.

This is an awesome TV series. Great value. (Moved on to Dexter now, equally good).

nope, Dexter > The Wire. Although both very good, dexter wins as it didn't have a poor second series.

You didn't like the series at the Docks? Thought it was one of the best personally. Never seen Dexter yet, so can't comment.

I've seen Dexter and The Wire..... you can't really compare them they are both very good examples of excellent TV shows. However if I had to pick one it would the The Wire just because of the innovation behind it. If Shakespeare did a cop show, it would be this... it goes over boundaries that other shows never had because it took risks. If you look at the Shield (another good show), it just stayed in what it was good at because the producers all knew it was a cash cow, while the Wire constantly evolved the plots even though they could have just churned out the same stuff every season. It is why its the only show that is still hyped senseless even after its completely finished.

The Wire and the writer's earlier show Homicide life on the street both didn't get watched massively, now after its finished its getting watched all the time. Writeups are saying its the best thing ever made. Type in top 10 TV shows in google and see how many times the wire comes first. By the way, anyone who has seen the wire, have a look at "Generation Kill", i would say its the same makers attempt of band of brothers in modern warfare... worth a view but only a miniseries.

the wire rules!! Omar is a legend

Prsonally think The Wire is overrated... much prefer Sopranos/Dexter (first season of Dexter is amazing). Others love the Wire though, so good deal.

Omar rocks, you fill me?

I thought Omar was a terrific character!

Omar going out for cornflakes in his jammies and a shotgun is tv gold! How they created a baddie who was such a goodie was amazing. The horror on both sides when they shoot his grandma's hat off "On a Sunday?!!" and some of his conversations with Bunk showing the different paths of their lives in definitely comparable to a Shakespearean tragedy.

Think I might get them back out and watch them again actually!...

Some of the best dialogue ever written ;) (Warning - NSFW )

/Tongue in cheek comment, it's a seriously kick ass show.
