Yeah, those stupid "UK public". Just because the series hasn't been shown in the UK until this year is no excuse... bloody idiots the lot of them. :p

Great series - but as posted above the individual sets can be bought cheaper. Still a good price if you desperately want them all in one box though!
#7
im also one whos never seen this! boo hiss shame on me and all that.
are there any more series in the pipeline? is this the complete collection?
#8
Fives the lot. So you won't have continually updated boxsets.
#9
I struggled when I watched the first episode of "The Wire" and considered that it would have been better with a phrase book. It made me remember the scene in the film "Airplane" where the black guy speaks and the white woman says "It's OK, I speak 'Jive'..."

However, by the second episode I was hooked. Gripping stuff, really very good. As a Hill Steet Blues and NYPD Blue lover I thought this was brilliant.

Good price but I'll probably go for the individuals to save the cash.

Fantastic show, but as mentioned there are better deals out there. Its well worth taking the plunge for though! http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/jul/20/television.irvinewelsh

Warm, but not hot enough for me, having caught it on BBC2 over the last few months. Good show, though.
#13
The Wire is the new football for me. Something all my mates all talk about in the pub and I haven't a clue what they're on about. Should I invest in this, or save myself £70 till the conversation goes back on to breasts?

Voted hot if you don't want to be left out.

I loved them all, season 4 wow :) Amazing TV. You need to give it a few shows to get into it. The only problem is that after watching it you will struggle to find anything better.

I hate rewatching things, but for this I will watch again :)

It's supposed to be fantastic - great price too!

Buy it at whatever price you can it will be worth it, its so gripping and well written and will keep your mind occupied until you watch the next episode.

10/10 for me and i am as harsh as they get!

Didn't Zavvi get wiped out on the street? Bought out for online, right?

£20 for a cardboard box - now that's a hot, hot deal...

Or if your really cheap you could always find it on the net in divx This is a show that must be watched no matter how you obtain it. I watched all of it about a year and a half ago, and once its finished you want more just like the video game shenmue. Something so good everything after feels like rubbish. Try watching the bill after watching the wire lol.

Another amazing series is Breaking Bad, both season 1 and 2 are out and its very good, different to the wire but just as compelling. True Blood both seasons are also out (but s2 isnt on dvd yet). Sons of Anarchy (s2 is airing in USA now) is also pretty good, not quite up there with the wire and Breaking bad but still not bad at all.

Its pretty shameful that we in the UK have no good series really. Yet we pay for TV license and many of us pay well over the odds for sky and cable. BBC comes out with something good from time to time such as last years apparitions which was pretty good. But Eastenders, Corrie (can be good but at the minute is boring), the Bill, Jonathon Ross (errr) X factor, strictly come dancing, deal or no deal are pretty appaling value for money yet the public seems to lap it all up.

Only if you have already seen the Shield as well.

Anyone disagrees, I will gladly draw pistols at dawn to defend the Sheild's honour. Else I'll just send Vic around (he's got a lot of angst to work out).

That said, the Wire is compulsory viewing for anyone whose taste isn't in their a$$

Yes Breaking Bad is excellent - Bryan Cranston stealing Hugh Laurie's Emmys for Best Actor two years in a row with very good reason - a total 180 from Hal on Malcolm in the Middle. True Blood is also one of the few series I have seen in the last few years that is pretty much original (unless you view it as a race struggle with black power replaced with vampire power).

Others you may have missed and worth catching up with... Fringe, Hung, The Riches, Lie to Me, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, John Adams, Generation Kill, 30 Rock, The (US) Office, Leverage (A Team crossed with Hustle) and of course Mad Men. Plus loads I guess I've missed, feel free to correct me!

Good though the Shield is, after the Wire it's a bit 'cop show' to the Wire's literary slant.

The only reason I will not draw pistols with you at dawn is your obvious appeciation of Arrested Development -

I watched it with the subtitles. It certainly helps in some of the scenes where it is harder to understand the B'more accent.

You have to remember that the US domestic market is about five times the size of the UK's. And then there's the rest of the English-speaking world. These days, it's pretty much only the BBC that makes drama series, and it does pretty well exporting its costume/historical dramas, as well as the more modern 'sexed-up' variants. And there's the Doctor Who franchise, which is simultaneously as good and as silly as any US-made sci-fi/fantasy with the exception of Babylon 5.
