The Wire: Complete HBO Season 1-5 £44.99 @ Amazon

Amazon have done a HMV Price match...

The Wire is one of those programmes where the increasing number of people who seem to passionately recommend it are simply not wrong. For buried underneath a mountain of praise, and talk of it being one of the finest television shows of all time, is a staggering piece of work, one that slowly but surely takes a look at the many facets of the drugs trade, centred in the city of Baltimore.

Series by series, we spend time with the cops, the dealers, the media, local politicians, the education system and more, as The Wire gives each careful treatment, and a three-dimensional portrayal. It also paints a picture of a city in real trouble, with Baltimore one of The Wires uncredited stars. But where the show really delivers is in the characters it creates and moulds, and the very real troubles and challenges each of them must face.

The shows detailed strokes are even more compelling than the broader picture it paints.

Enhanced by a series of non-showy performances in front of the camera, and some immaculate writing behind, The Wire really is that proverbial real deal. Its genuinely unpredictable (characters of all sizes find themselves ruthlessly bumped off when you least expect them to), fearless in its tackling of certain subjects, and is that very masterpiece that an increasing army of champions of The Wire suggest it is. The five series contained here are genuinely American television at its very finest, right through to the final scene. Mesmerising television.

HMV deal probably got so hot because many people still have student discounts applied to their accounts which made it a shade over £40.

I think this is a good deal, very very good series.

Yeah, The Wire was broadcast and released on DVD in 4:3 at the creator's wish. There's talk of it being released in 16:9 one day on Blu-Ray though but I wouldn't hold your breath for that.

P.S. Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

Yup it was shot in 4:3.

"And perhaps the final contrast to the rest of high-end episodic television, The Wire for each of its five seasons has been produced in good old fashioned 4 x 3 standard definition. DP Dave Insley recalled, "The reason the show has stayed 4x3 is because David Simon thinks that 4x3 feels more like real life and real television and not like a movie. The show's never been HD, even 4x3 HD and that (SD) is how it is on the DVDs. There is no 16x9 version anywhere." As a viewer with an HD set I will point out that like much of SD television that makes its way to HD channels, it appears that HBO utilizes state-of-the-art line doubling technology. It may still be standard definition, but line doubled it looks considerably better on a high definition set than it would on a standard definition set."

It's The Bill with American accents and less action. Overhyped bland rubbish for Guardian readers.

Tried to watch this but just couldn't understand what they were saying half the time, really didn't understand who was who and what was happening. And we watch a load of shows like this.

Normally I would snap a series up at this price and be quite excited about it, but for this I can't bring myself to buy it.

You do have to give it a bit of time, its not as easy to follow to start with but you soon become familiar with the police jargon and the characters are fairly consistent throughout so you pick up the names eventually. This is something that requires a bit of time but is certainly well worth it.

I like my TV to be entertaining though rather than feel like you are studying for an exam.

Hmmm maybe if I buy it I will feel as though I need to get my moneys worth.

I'm toying between this and the West Wing. It's one or the other and I don't know which... help!

the wire is the best thing I've ever seen. I remember watching the first couple of episodes and thinking I cant stick to this. The programme is 'slow burning', you have to keep watching before you realise its the best thing!!!!

Ordered this in the end and I think the subtitles hint may be a good idea actually.
