I bought one of these last September from Vodafone in the UK for £35.00 with £15.00 of unlimited credit and I have been using it at about £5.00 per month, to get emails etc when I am away on business, perhaps in town or travelling and when my home broadband doesn't work - my home broadband is a bit iffy. That's also much better than paying for say £10.00 per day for wireless when I occasionally stay in hotels.

I then bought one in Australia when I was there for a month last November, but had to pay AU$99.00 which equates to about £50.00. Again it was useful for keeping in touch, booking travel etc when I was in town in Sydney, at airports and in hotels where I didn't have to pay for their wireless. In the UK, I don't remember having to submit many personal details to register the card, however in Australia they wanted the lot - passport info etc maybe credit card info? etc which I was rather peeved at giving.

Then back in the UK I lost my UK data card and tried to buy another, and at that point found out that the terms had changed. You could only now buy a K3565R from Vodafone which means that I would have to top up for £15.00 every month, as outlined on this forum. That doesn't suit me as I only need to use say £5.00 to 8.00 per month. I tried ringing around various Vodafone stores and was informed (when they bothered to answer!) that other people (including a Voda employee) had been looking for the older unlimited one, but they weren't available. Fortunately my UK data card was found and sent back to me.

Then last week, by chance I noticed several of the newer £15.00 per month and one of the unlimited ones at my local Tesco. I wasn't actually looking, however bought another of the unlimited ones as a spare. I travel quite often so there is the chance that I may lose one again. I paid £24.99 which is a little more than prices quoted here on this forum, but still £10.00 less than I paid at Vodafone last September. In effect after allowing for £15.00 credit it cost only £10.00 to save me say £120.00 per annum by not having to use a monthly resetting new version.

I would like to just leave the the 2nd one in a drawer just in case I need it in future. So my questions are:

1. Will I be able to do so and register is for use in say 1 year (assuming for example that I have lost the first one then). If I register it now I will have to use it and keep it active.
2. If I have to register it now and start using it, can I install and use both (and keep both active) on my 1 laptop? Will there be any conflict preventing having 2 active on the one computer?

Sorry for the long story, which I hope is useful for others and explains why my questions.

Any response appreciated, thanks. Paul
These are still in stock in Currys and PC World (no longer in Dixons), In store reserve only. But only £22.97 and the product description confirms the credit does not expire. I'd print that out and keep just in case there is a problem or someone in the shop gives you the expiring one, which they also have in store and the same white colour dongle !

Depends what your spending your £400 on. A Toshiba with a much better T6500 core 2 duo processor was posted here recently for £370 and the better QL65 and QL66 equipped laptops are often below £400.
Thanks grahawk.

Considering Dual Core Pentium laptops have been posted on here at less cost ,albeit with smaller hard drives, but with Vista Home Premium and a cheapish upgrade to Windows 7, this is not a good deal.

To be honest, I think this is not a good deal. Vista Basic (not cheap upgradeable) single core Celeron, GMA 4500 graphics shared, no HDMI out, and eMachines. This combination is not exiting. For this price I want at least dual core and W7 installed. You can get 500gb hdd relatively cheap now if that is what you need.

I'm no friend of Acer because of their bloat-software which you need to use for the computer to function properly. But the specs are better than average for the price and if it is not noisy (as many Acer's are) it's a good deal. Windows is only Basic, so no free Windows 7 upgrade, but this is over-rated anyway. You may as well stick with Vista and tweak it.

how complex is it to tweak vista? wheres the best place for a guide to doing so? cheers

What bloatware do you HAVE to use for this or any Acer to work properly?

And not all Acer are noisy.......what are you on about man!!

does the 80gig play PS2 Games????

Only the original 60GB model plays ps2 games but all ps3s play ps1 games if you want to get really retro.
They're all gone already, Out of stock
ben.harris;6267369
I think the answer's "No". I've read some conflicting posts saying that the early 80GB's did, but then other posts saying that none of the 80GB's ever did. I would imagine this one almost certainly won't though.

Correct. Definitely doesn't play PS2 games

I wouldnt buy this if I were you. If ever you want to uninstall it, it can be a real problem. I tried to uninstall (in order to use another program) - subsequently had to do complete system reinstall. It leaves loads behind which can conflict with new virus protection. Not cheap at this price either - IMO!!

I work in IT and have had issues with Norton not unistalling properly using the correct unistall procedure. on some machines. Personally i steer well clear of Norton as it is too intrucive for my liking, i like a programs that do their job well but run mainly in the background and dont bother you unless there is need for it.

I'm sorry norton hasn't worked out for you guys, but this post was mainly meant for those out there who use norton, don't encounter problems with it and are looking for a good deal now their subscription is up or nearing it's end. Was it such a bad idea to post this? If it was, pls say so and i'll remove it.

You are correct it is highly rated, but it is far from faultless. It says that some items are viruses when they are not, when you search for information about an alleged virus you find that Avira have given it a name that only they recognise and the information they offer about it, is inadequate.

give avast a go or kaspersky for free if u bank with barclays

Arstar;6227866
I thought Avira was meant to be highly rated as an antivirus package. Don't know about their all-in-one Security Suite package.

Thanks to both of you, that's enough to stop me going back to Norton. Now I just need to find something better than Avira.

Voted Cold, why would anyone want this device when you can have an iphone...

When I last looked the cheapest iPhone 3G option was an 8GB version only 12 month Pay-as-you-go on O2.
iPhone 3G 8GB = £349
12 month PAYG = 12 x £10 monthly required minimum top-up
Total = £469

or, £219 more and a quarter of the storage capacity!

I have an 8GB iPod Touch (2nd gen.) and I have it loaded with tunes, apps and vids. A little discipline and organisation and you can more than manage with 8GB unless you have to have everything on. Mine's only 25% full. When I can afford it I will get an iPhone as I would love my iPod Touch with phone, sms and camera capability and all that sync's effortlessly with my Mac.

I use mine a lot for email and web browsing and regardless of all the naysayers it is a great device with great software which is updated regularly and loads of free software with DS and PSP quality commercial games costing between 59p and £5.99.
- It's simply the best of its kind - ask microsoft, creative, archos, sony, nokia, motorola, et al, whether they wish they had developed it!
Greg136;4466677
Because I have a phone, I want a dedicated music player, that I can use to access the internet via wi-fi, without having to pay for a monthly contract.

i achieved a result with this deal..it went out of stock as i was registering with the site so i emailed dixons asking them if they would price match...they agreed and emailed me a code to get the discount which worked straight away...actually i bought 2 recievers for £17.98:thumbsup:
I've also found it is not acurate or uptodate - waste of money, I don't use mine any more
andiejn;4410124
it's not perfect, but it has certainly got me round a few jams and more than saved me £9 worth of time, mine came with the sat nav, though I would've considered this as a back up should mine falter (I snapped my garmin on accidentally, but that was pants at picking up a signal anyway!)

would be hot, if still ins tock

Personally I find it guides me around traffic jams that were cleared 24 hours before, and doesn't warn me of 8 mile jams that are there. Add to the fact it puts you on the A406 when the M25 is at 50MPH and the journey is a real stress PLUS slower. Slow simmer it with the regular radio traffic news being both accurate and free and i vote this item a waste of money.
joylove;4409399
TMC data is woefully out of date and lacking on coverage. Save your £9 for the fuel you use in a traffic jam.

pretty good.
this sounds like a good deal to me as before this the modems were £40 cheapest price, but didn't include any "airtime". the 1gig per month was £5 if you got a half price contract deal, but you were generally tied into an 18 month contract. if someone just wants the dongle and only needs it for infrequent use, such as going on holiday in the uk, it's ideal

there was another deal around christmas where you could pay £100 and get something like 12gigs or 12 months as a prepaid option, which was also great

from time to time contract deals come up at half price so you get 1gig (or is it 3gig now) for £5 a month over 18 months and get a free dongle. that's the deal i got a while back
sbfc;4022442
I think this is a hot deal I just think people are mis-understanding the deal - for the £41 you get the modem and 3 months usage (this alone on the payg tariff would be £30 - meaning £11 for the modem)

Glad to see somebody actually reading what the deal is.
If anyone has got a better deal please post details so that we can get it aswel. :whistling:
