Following a decade lurking in the shadows, the Thief series is back for a reboot. At the helm this time out is Eidos Montreal, the studio behind Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which is a pretty good pedigree to start things off. You play as Garrett, the Master Thief, haunting the City and getting to places no-one else can. The Baron's Watch is spreading a tide of oppression and fear, and Garrett can only trust his own abilities. When an uprising emerges, however, Garrett finds himself caught up in the rising tide of revolution. If he doesn't get involved, there's going to be blood on the streets. As you might expect of a game titled 'Thief', there's a heavy focus on stealth. In fact, the game tends to work best when you avoid combat altogether. Helping this along is Garrett's Swoop ability, which enables him to glide from shadow to shadow. There's also a 'focus' ability which, similar to the likes of detective vision in the Batman: Arkham games, highlighs loot, switches, traps and items. The game boasts an open world with a lot of choice. Making his way across the city, for example, Garrett might avoid getting caught by the Watch in a number of ways. He could distract guards with a bottle or blunt arrow, learn their patrol patterns to pick them off one by one or just flit across the rooftops, undetected. It's lavishly realised, too. Going for a bit of a ye olde gothic vibe, it's revealed under the flickering of candlelight and offers a lot to explore. Thief is back, not with a bang so much as a deadly whisper."
