A double-bill of sci-fi horror. In John Carpenter's 'The Thing' (1982), a research team in the Antarctic, led by R.J. MacReady (Kurt Russell), discovers a spaceship buried beneath the ice, and becomes terrorised by the shape-changing monster that is housed within. In the 2011 prequel, the action is set on a research site in Antarctica three days before the action of the original story, the film focusing on the Norwegian camps that were the initial target of the alien invasion. When they discover an alien spacecraft on the site, science graduate Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and experienced researcher Dr Sander Halvorson (Ulrich Thomsen) disagree about how to act. When Dr Halvorson refuses to abandon his research, Kate teams up with tough Vietnam veteran Sam Carter (Joel Edgerton) to pursue the alien intruders by helicopter.

great films even the new one is good I enjoyed it but the original has an atmosphere that is unbeatable

Heat added.
'Original/remake' is awesome, that eerie soundtrack, sense of claustrophobia, brilliant acting and fantastic special FX make it a classic of 80's horror.

Prequel is meh.

I'm wondering if it's going to be worth it? The original Blu is, imo, one of the better transfers I've seen.

I agree. The 1984 film looks like it was filmed yesterday. apart from the special effects!

That's still a great movie. Not a fan of 2011 remake but love the John Carpenter version.

Some of the extras do sound tantalising; I might have to keep an eye out for a price drop. The region lock (and import fees ( might dissuade me though.

The John Carpenter version is very good, but have not watched it for years,, for some reason it was in extreme letterbox version for a long time........but have it on my laptop so may watch it again...:)

But IIRC I read the short story before watching the first film , the summer of '76 (I was nine lol )

The Thing 1982 is one of my childhood favourites. Probably explains why I like horror in snowy terrain.

The cartoon Mighty Max did an episode completely based off The Thing as well.

Bought from Amazon with no rush delivery for £1 credit.

No, region A only. Scream/Shout Factory are always region locked unfortunately.

You gotta be bleep kidding me.

The prequel is interesting as it ends immediately as the proper film starts. However, it has none of the class of the original Thing. For this price its worth it just for Carpenters film.
#27
I bought this from WOW earlier this year for about 8 quid so this is a good price. I like in the prequel how they setup the scenes that appear in the original. Axe in the door, twisted burnt thing in the snow etc.

It wasn't a remake. It was set before the events of the Carpenter movie.

The John Carpenter version is very good, but have not watched it for years,, for some reason it was in extreme letterbox version for a long time...

The DVD was non anamorphic 2.35:1, so if you played it on a TV with the incorrect settings you would have had the stretched look. If you play it on your laptop with VLC you can display it properly, just go through the video settings and crop to 2.35:1.

Going to see John Carpenter in concert end of this month, should be awesome. Doubt he'll play this tune as it was Enio's gig. Shame as this is easily his best film.

Cheers for replying. Gonna order like the artwork on the sleeve. Will it work on Xbox one because that plays other region games?

no, just buy the original. This pack is just a form of accreditation by association. remake/reboot was terrible.

Loved the 1982 version...and was pleasantly surprised at the 2011 version too! Was actually quite good. Well worth it for anyone who doesn't have either...or wants a BR copy.

It's neither a remake, nor a reboot. It's a prequel, and a pretty good one too.
