that's really weird, my friend ordered a 12.1" one, cencelled the order a couple of hours later, they said they couldn't cancel it and just had to refuse the package when he got it, it dispatched a few days later.
The Thinkpad will probably be better quality but as you point out, you do pay extra as a result.
seem pretty decent spec as well, about time kids got something worth using lol
So I wouldn't go near them with a barge pole personally; brother also avoids them after dealing with their customer service when his T60 battery failed.

Anyway, had one break on me and took 3 days for a replacement (wifi didnt work). good quality, warmly recomended.
Some people may compare it with the other laptops. To be honest, it does not look quite good if comparing with Sony, or Apple Macbook, but it does all the jobs. The typing experience is so great and trackpoint, to some people are much better to trackpad.

Never had any problems with Lenovo's onsite next day warranty. (If you need it then pay for it simple as).
I wouldn't for myself (Tons of other devices I can use).
But would for parents as they only want one device each at home.
I normally buy X series Thinkpad's for myself or my parents use W series (Probably an overkill but they can afford it).
They are not as indestructible as they used to be though if you need that the only option really is a Panasonic Toughbook semi rugged.
Shouldn't need a roll cage for proper design (I have one of the last internal IBM made model's X31 (Before they outsourced the manufacturer but kept the IBM name) and I have been using it without the HDD caddy just plugged direct into the side original drive. It has been dropped onto metal stairs and concrete from height / beer spilt over it. Thrown out of the bath when it almost went into the water open and it is still perfect, (Use it for connecting to the car with oily hands now) probably a decade old.
1.7ghz pentium-m 2GB RAM
Sony / Macbooks are not in the same league the keyboards are utter junk and no trackpoint junk glossy screens that no one in their right mind would want (Perhaps people dealing with pro print / video if they need super accurate colour production more than basic comfort (I pity them)
