Set during the summer of 1983, THIS IS ENGLAND is the poignant story of Shaun (Thomas Turgoos) an unpopular kid who discovers a sense of belonging among a group of peaceful skinheads. Having lost his father during the Falklands Conflict, Shaun sees something of a father figure in Woody (Joseph Gilgun), the gang's leader. However, the warmth and affection is short-lived, as Combo (Stephen Graham) - a former member of the group, and radical right-wing racist is released from prison and divides the friends with his deeply disturbed outlook. Whereas Woody had strived to bring everyone together through their love of music, Combo seeks to mobilise a force, with his sights set on spreading chaos and hatred. At only 12 years of age, and of volatile frame of mind, Shaun is susceptible to Combo's charismatic, yet gravely dangerous philosophising. As adulthood beckons and with Combo's rage manifesting into stark violence, Shaun will have to decide which side of the line he's going to stand. The sixth feature from writer/Director Shane Meadows (A ROOM FOR ROMEO BRASS, DEAD MAN'S SHOES), THIS IS ENGLAND is a bitter-sweet rites of passage tale that is destined to be remembered for years to come.

This is a total and absolute modern classic. I just love everything about this film. A steal at £2.99 and for those that don't yet have it, get it now. Heat and rep for highlighting this DVD.

OK. I've given you too much rep in the past. I'll give you some when I can.

Incredible film.

I know I'm in a small minority, but I thought this film was extremely average.

Not voted either way, though.

This is a total and absolute piece of rubbish. I simply cannot understand why people like this pile of melodramatic codswallop. It's not an accurate portrayal of the time, the plot is awkward and contrived and has nothing intelligent to say about anything. Dire.

don't remmeber 1983 being like that as shown in the movie....

Mind you, I was only 2!

It's not intended as an accurate or balanced portrayal of the time. Its Shane Meadows' own interpretation of his area when he was growing up. It never claimed to be anything other than that. I loved it

I agree a little, although I did enjoy the film. My issue is that Ska music and that style is wrong for 1983. Tone tone era 1979 - 81 Specials ghost town 1981 was their last single. more folk were into Duran Duran and Boy Bufty George & wham by 1983. Yeah not a true reflection of that time.

Just because a band stops releasing singles, doesn't mean people don't listen to them. Ska/2Tone has and always will be music to stomp to..................1981, 1983, 2009, whenever...............:whistling:

And even as we as humans evolve, some people still carry racist/neo-nazi views.

Absolutely - it is terrifying to think that the characters from the NF meeting would now be wearing suits, and canvassing for votes in the Euro Elections............:?

NF/BNP - Rebranded, but still utterly repugnant...............

Yep and Racists deserve to be humiliated. But this film chronicles a time when skinhead culture was being hijacked from an expression of working class roots to a neo-fascist symbol and this film portays good bad and indifferent characters within that in a very honest way. Non-racist skins don't deserve to be castigated because of the idiots - they were the ones keeping Ska alive in the UK before 78.

I definitely think this is true to the 1983 timeframe and still remember the way an NF boot felt from the receiving end in 86.

Totally agree - NF hijacked the skinhead culture to try and gain support, in much the same way the BNP is trying to ingratiate itself with working class Britain now. Wrong then, wrong now, end of.

The skinhead movement can take much credit for the growth of Ska and Reggae in this country, and rightly so - you only need to listen to Skinhead Moonstomp to see the influence of the two movements on each other. Shame that the skinhead image has been tarnished by the fascist minority, as racial tolerance in the late 60s/70s was certainly not the norm, and many skinheads were exhibiting just that.

Always wanted to watch this but couldn't be bothered to spend more than a fiver on it. Great find. This DVD entering my PS3 is imminent.

I thought they got the look of the era fairly accurate but as discussed in previous threads regarding this movie, I didn't find the characters to be what I knew of skinhead "types" - Combo was the only one to harness the general traits from my own experiences.

I did a yahoo review of this last year:

Oi! Oi!

I had a brief period as a skinhead in the earlier part of the 1980's in the UK.

I would never have viewed myself as a racist but most skinheads of that era probably subscribed to that particular outlook.

I much prefer the movie Romper Stomper, however, "This is England" was a very watchable film.

One of the aspects I notice in many recent films is that they seem to add \"caring and understanding\" to characters that do not ordinarily behave in such a fashion in reality - that\'s a flaw in my mind.
Combo reflects the type of attitude you would normally observe - or at least that\'s my opinion!
I still don\'t think Combo is completly accurate but he\'s the most convincing of the group (to me) in being able to project the \"nastiness\" of the era.

A couple of niggles with the film include talk of \"chilling\" or \"chill down\" and the use of certain types of handshakes or hugging.
This has nothing to do with guys or skinheads of the 1980\'s and is a glaring error which spoils the generally accurate sets that they use to recreate 1983.
It\'s also somewhat ironic - intentionally or not seeing Combo drive around in a Toyota!

Having watched this film a couple of times I would recommend viewing but I tend to disagree with some of the other reviewers that consider this movie to be a benchmark in British film.

We don't need no British Movement
Nor the Ku Klux Klan
Nor the National Front
It makes me an angry man

I just want to live in peace
Why can't you be the same?
Why should I live in fear?
This fussing and fighting's insan

With a Nazi salute and a steel capped boot
