#2
Great price might pop to aldi this afternoon!!
#3
If its one I think it is we struggled to get any channels where as normal freeview box received them all no problem.
#4
That sounds like the one that is £79 in Argos, this one may be cheap because there is a new model due out. This deal is defo hot as the new model is just a new case with the exact same internals.
#5
but is it any good tho compared to the two bigger makes? yes its a good price but if it freezes up a lot or struggles with reception then its no use to me no matter how good the price is

Freezes up just like the bigger makes do (such as Humax) but maybe a little more often, and I mean a little.

Reception is not a problem as I have always had all the channels and I do not get blocking, skips or pops
#12
I have struggled with one of these for ten months but i finally gave up on it and sent it back on monday, endless failed/missed recordings and when it froze as it constantly did it would turn itself off five minutes after i had rebooted it.

It has got so bad now that they have started downloading short tutorials on what to do if you have a problem with the machine and there is a small advertisement constantly displaying with a helpline number to call but if they are as much help as the tutorials i would'nt even bother ringing.

It might be that i just got a bad one but i doubt it if they are having to download these tutorials,it's more likely they are sick of all the complaints they are getting.

Honestly, i would not pay £1 for another one of these never mind £40.

Setanta is a subscription channel just like TopUpTV, but its worth knowing that they are currently doing a promotion that means that you'll get a 'free' full year/season viewing for a £20 connection fee. I have just activated this online and within minutes I got a picture, top bannana for tonight's footie.

Some people seem to have a lot more trouble than others but issues such as these are usually cured by doing a factory reset, the down side being that your stored recordings get wiped. I got the same problem after about 8 months and sorted it this way, just like re-installing your PC. Another fix is to put a bigger HD in there as the issue seems to come from HD clutter filling up the HD, this is only cost effective if you have a spare IDE drive lying around of course.

There are better machines but a new humax will cost you over £150 and a Topfield even more, this is a no brainer for £40 (if true) and I'll happily get another for upstairs at this price.

For anyone who's tempted, the new model is coming out with brand new firmware which will fix all oustanding issues and will be released to all existing machines also.

The fan is always on 'cos TopUpTV downloads to the HD overnight. Here's hoping the other bugs get fixed soon with the new FW :whistling:

As discussed in other deals for this model, it is complete rubbish and I wouldn't use one again even if it were free :x
#19
Yep, you pays your money you takes your choice. I have had one for a year and have had some issues but never at the level that would cause me to cry about it all over this forum. For me its a good deal at £40, if you are the sort of person who cannot tolerate any blips in your TV viewing habits then go for a Topfield.
#20
It's good when it works, atrocious when it doesn't.

I had the 80gb one for just over a year and like all freeview recorders it had it's occasional quirks, but it went back last week after a month of **** with it, it was totally useless.
#21
When i phoned john lewis to return mine the girl said ''i wont even ask if you would like a replacement'' and when i asked why she said that they had been getting them back as quickly as they had been selling them.

No disrespect to the poster of the offer as if these machines worked as they should it would be a cracking deal but as far as i am concerned if it does'nt do what it's supposed to it's a waste of money.
#22
£40 is a bargain for this. They are due to be releasing a major bug fix firmware any day now which will finally fix the ff\rew bug. Also Topup have just launched more models which shows they have commitment to the platform and as they have so many of these out there I would expect them to keep on updating the firmware.

I wonder which store the OP got his from?

My machine had the ff/rew bug for the full ten months that i had it and there were rumours then that a fix was due any time,i dont call leaving people with a disfunctioning set for nearly a year commitment.

TUTV have engaged Wharfedale to make the new receivers in addition to Thompson, even though all these boxes, old and new, are based on the same Vestel platform the Wharfedale does not suffer the FF issue. The issues are not with the hardware, which is generally regarded as very good, its TUTV's software that is at fault.

As you said the next update will fix it (and offer some new cutting edge features apparantly), all those who could have got a box a £40 may well be kicking themselves in a few weeks time. But that's the gamble! ;-)

You are right in that respect, it's definately gone on too long. Anybody with this box should avoid this issue by stepping back from FF to normal speed instead of going direct from x64 to play which virtually eliminates the issue from occuring.

just got back from Aldi and.......................went through as £89.99!!!

Spoke to the manager who said it will be store specific as each store has a £400 budget each month to use to reduce whatever they like - in my stores case, the reduction isnt on these freeviews

Due to this im voting cold

ive got this model & to be honest its a cracking piece of kit, ive not had one moments problem with it, it does its uprgrades overnight. The fan still runs in standby mode but to be honest you have to have your ear right up to it to be able to hear it & then its still quite. It came with a free months top up tv but i declined to sign up to it as you have to give card details & then try to cancel when your free month is up, didnt need the hassle to try & cancel.

it does say 160 gb & the same goes for the 250gb version, but you dont actually get the full gb's worth. last time looked mine had 77 hours of recording time for the 160gb & you get a 14 day programme guide which is good, also has series link so you will never miss a series ever again.

Anyone know the process of setting up one of these for Setanta without being online, i was told it includes putting the Top up TV card in and leaving it on Channel 5 for an hour? Complicated situation, the box isn't mine i'm helping a neighbour so I havn't got the instructions.

the box is brand new today, standard, and have registered with Setanta with bank account details etc

any help appreciated!

EDIT - all sorted, took 4 separate calls to their 0870 number and their 0845 number, I had them hang up on me once but they sent the signal which contained the Setanta subscription details, rescanned the channels and voila, number 34 appeared.

They are £89 in York just been

I'd pay £40 but no more. This model has issues.

The Humax 9200 is probably a better buy if you can get it for around £100.

I got one of these GIVEN, when my friend bought a Humax from a recent deal on here, and am waiting for the promised upgrade, failing that it is going the journey, it is driving me MAD :-(
He wanted the Humax, as it is a dramatically better box anyway, but to be honest he looks at me in amazement when I say I am having all the problems, as he didn't find it nearly as bad, and was even able to use the series link which does nothing but waste me time!

"uprgrades overnight?" When?... it is long DUE, but this box hasn't had any!

The fan - deafening, often LOUDER in standby, not so bad in use. My hearing is NOT so good to start with, but I loose sleep with it!

The menus are awkward to navigate and it is very quirky needing an average 2 or more often 3 button presses to the one that my previous Digifusion did.

Reboots - I am rebooting daily without even looking to see if it needs it, to get round the annoying habit of it being frozen when I turn it on from in bed! It was needing about 5 reboots a week, so I save myself the bother of looking now.

Failed recordings? Daily. NOT using the series link seems to help, I get much fewer now, and turning off the extra time before and after recordings seems to have helped too, but it is not cured totally.

Oddly enough, I don't get this ff/rwd problem at all!

I need to put it on a remote control socket so I can turn it off easier, to get some peace, and save power, but am leaving it on currently, waiting until this promised upgrade, if that does not cure it, I won't even be giving it away, I don't dislike anyone enough :-(
#35
Without doubt the worst PVR I've ever owned. It doesn't rewind or fast forward properly (forget instant replays), and it won't come out of standby on a very regular basis. You will be unplugging it from the mains almost daily to reboot. If you are married and your wife likes Coronation Street, then marriage counselling might be in order as it always misses it.

Save your £40 and put it towards a Humax, which I wish I'd bought first. AVOID!

Not forgetting it takes longer to delete a program than it does to record the flaming thing.
