These are ace.

But noisy...can anyone remember what the tricks are for reducing the noise (something about Maplins rings a bell)
#2
Didn't I read recently that Thompson was getting out of consumer electronics altogether sometime soon?

The price is OK but it sure would be nice if vendors made it clear that it is a TERRESTIAL PVR. They all seem to assume that everyone receives Freeview (7 million people in this country don't).

I'm on the lookout for a decent Satellite PVR with EPG etc. It must be out there...

Thanks anyway.

I don't know that such a thing exists :-(
Apart from the Sky FreeSat I don't think you can receive a full epg from the Astra satellite (my box only shows me now and next). But I have an old pioneer VHS/HDD/DVD recorder which gets it's epg (including film4 etc) from one of the terrestial channels (ITV I think) - that uses an infra-red transmitter to turn on the satellite box at the right time and record using the epg.

Have a look at this link...
http://www.homecinemachoice.com/cgi-bin/displayreview.php?reviewid=7367
It appears that this uses the bulk of its hard drive for the TopUpTv Anytime service, leaving only 20Gb for your own choices of programs.

Satellite PVR's most certainly exist.

This page shows a decent selection although I'm not suggesting for a minute that this'd be the cheapest place to buy them:

http://www.satellitesuperstore.com/harddrives.htm

I quite like the look of the tecnomate TM6900...HD satellite receiver with built in freeview receiver and it's a PVR too!

Beyond my budget though, unfortunately!

They *should* arrive with a TUTV viewing card and flyer instructing you how to get a free months viewing. This came in a DVD style case in mine (although some have reoprted that the 'new' batch don't come with the card, you have to ring up to request one). If it DOES have the TUTV stuff in the box and you have no interest in it, then be advised you could get between £20 and £30 for it on ebay.

Yes it is freeview as in the DVB bit in the first post.

Does anyone that has one know if it can record from scart?

It is a freeview unit. You can also subscribe to top up tv if you want to.

On other threads people have said it can't.

Freeview PVRs record the digital data itself.
They can't record analogue signals - you'd need a DVD recorder or
2nd-hand Tivo to do that.

pjlhot is correct...

can i view setanta on freeview or is that top up tv?

This is a fantastic deal, I bought one of these about a month ago and the best price I could get it for was £93. In my area we will lose all our analogue channels in two weeks time so this is a must for me as I dont subscribe to sky.

I doubt it can. after all, what'd be the point?

I think the right answer is neither. You can get it through your aerial, and can register with Setanta to get it through a box like this (or any freeview box) but you have to pay Setanta £20 connection, and £10 a month. top-up tv has a range of channels to watch for another £10 a month. Freeview is the, well, free stuff.

I *think* setanta is a stand alone pay TV package so you can subscribe to it without subscribing to TUTV.

Maybe someone can confirm this?

I'm not sure as we only got it for freeview channels only

Also saw this instore in Bury Greater Manchester, they had a shelf full at £79.97 apparently £20 off the normal selling price, so if you want one quickly and save yourself a delivery charge in the process... rated hot

bought one of these when they were £99 in argos. Absolute rubbish took it back and changed it 3 times before settling for the sagem. All 3 used to freeze up for no reason .Recording timers would not go off . list of recordings got corrupted etc etc I could go on oh and series link only worked when it felt like it would record one skip another and record the third ,you have been warned!!! :x

I have this and think it is a brilliant peice of kit

It lets off a constant low humming noise which which you can barely hear when tv is on ,but is a lot more noticable when tv is off and box is on standby.

I have series recorded all episodes of Heroes without any problems.

I did miss Rangers hammering Celtic 3 - 0 , but that was because wife switched of extension lead at socket because dvr noise was annoying her when tv was off. Divorce lawyer says I have good case

I have subscribed to Setanta £9.99 a month, and card goes into slot under hatch on front

Overall go for it if you have freeview in your area. The option of recording 2 different programmes when you are night-shift , even if they overlap each other is very handy

Any questions just ask and I will try and answer

btw I disabled TUPTV download options in menu and have 69 hours available on hard drive

COLD

Can get them for about £80 DELIVERED @ john lewis with the £20 discount code.
#24
I'm really not sure about this. I want one for the teenage daughters bedroom but all the reviews are putting me off... trouble is all the other HDD recorders are twice this price and don't detail series link which I see as a must... argh!!

The £20 discount code only works for orders over £100 so you are 5p short with this... even so, it costs more and only slightly less with quidco too so it's hardly cold is it....

No good for a bedroom as the fan is on permanently (even in standby) although you may be lucky as sometimes they are quiet but most aren't judging from the reviews.

The point being that you might want to plug a cable box or dvd player into it to record from. Very handy addition.

The new firmware is (allegedly) going to put an end to this criticism. Like I have said before, ours is virtually slient (in fact, I'm tempted to open up the case and see if the fan is working, lol). It is in my son's bedroom, he records stuff through the night sometimes and he hasn't had trouble sleeping (having said that, he's 18 and doesn't seem to have trouble sleeping in the day if you let him, either!). There is absolutely NO other Freeview recorder with these features (record 2 channels at same time, series link, time-shift etc etc) at anything like this price at the moment, plus it's firmware is constantly being updated by the manufacturer. It's a no-brainer IMO.

No problems with mine. When did you buy it? If it was some time ago it may not have had the latest firmware which has solved any previous issues.

Mine arrived yesterday from JL and im more than happy with it. Was bracing myself for all the noise people have talked about in previous posts but I was pleasantly surprised with it as you can hardly hear a thing. Have played around with the recording and ffwd/rwd and everythings working great. I know its early days but after so many :( reviews perhaps Ive been prepared for the worst.. However so far so good.. and you can free up tons of hours for regular recording too (not just Top-up TV) by deselecting what channels it downloads. Its all in the intructions, no problem whatsoever. Happy days!
#31
In the OP it says RGB output: NO

Is that correct? I should certainly hope not
#32
Oops should also say that another poster mentions you can get it for £80 delivered from JL.

You also get a 2 years guarantee from JL.....

You can indeed. And if you go through Quidco the net cost cost is £75. No need to leave the house and twice the warranty. Plus, if you follow my tips in this thread you may get the net cost down to approx £50!

Placing a book on top! --- don't sue me if anything breaks :)

My mate placed a CD case on top (there wasn't even a CD in it so you can imagine the lightness) and VOILA! Silent (ish!).

Have you actually read the original post in the thread highlighted? :whistling:

Does this really do series link ? My Panasonic one has an option to record the same time everyweek but not series link...
I also had an issue with using series link on my digital TV card in my PC where on series link it would record every episode including repeats thus often ended up with 3 copies of the same episode a week !.

cheers

No, being human and male I'm notoriously lazy and like the information being placed before me. Upon summoning a click, I now see what you are referring to, and am left wondering what too the Acceptance Card would be worth on eBay....

Humble apologies...
#40
Argh the Acceptance Card is OOS!!! What's the next cheapest item!!!
