Been after a cheap 3 mobile for my dad for a while - I've read lots of bad stuff about the ZTE F102, and the INQ Mini 3G had previously been on sale at £59.99 and then £49.99.

Seems like a good deal to me.

I've got quidco on the last two PAYG mobiles I've had from three, no worries.

This is actually quite a good phone depending on what you are after.

Its one of the smallest form factor 3G phones available. Its bright, colourful and modern, also very easy to use with a plethora of social networking applications. you get a usb mains charger plug (good if you have other usb charging items), usb charging/data cable and earphones/handsfree kit. has a microSD slot as well.

Dislikes about it was the limitations on being able to customise basic settings. You cant permanently turn off T9 text prediction, you have to explicitly do this every time. Good if you use T9, bad if you dont.

You cant remove/hide/disable the shortcut icons from the front screen, they are always there. a tad irritating if you dont use many of them but are forced to have them displayed.

The keys are very stiff and often annoying to use if you are a texter.

The headphones/handfree is mini usb so cant use standard jack plug earphones. Plus side is that you get a free pair of the mini usb ones included lol....

operating system perceived to be slow/non responsive.

I had mines less than a week and sold it.

:)

For potentially £22 - it's one hell of a deal!!!!!

check your nearest 3 store - I think it is £30 on payg (reduces the quidco risk). I did get my quidco payment when I bought a phone from 3 via internet though...

in store 3 £39.99 today.

Just ordered one today. I've been around the houses looking at Skype options on something and keeping two phones, this one just for Skype and another for calls on Vectone at 5p for calls and SMS seems the only cheap option.

Now if 3 did call rates near 5p instead of 20p without having to get a monthly plan (I know £10 / mix 100) as I am never going to spend £120 a year on phone calls from my mobile.
#9
Tracked on TCB at £18.18 and received email with order reference number so prospective net cost is £21.81. I'd get more than that gross on fleabay and if it is crap, I reckon I'll get £20 on Gumtree or elsewhere.

i got 18 pounds off the 29.99 f102

also worth noting that if you order a 10 quid payg sim (SEPERATLY) you also get 11 quid back on that which would make the phone with topup 21 quid

it made my f102 11 quid bargin phone with skype + msn + camera

N.B. must put sim through as a completly serperate order (i did mine in the wifes name to be sure)

Does anyone know if skype - in works? and if there are any additional associated costs?

I have a skype number for work and if this will receive the calls when I am out and about that would be brilliant!
banned#13
very tempted, but how far does 150mb get you? as i do a lot of facebooking, and the occasional tweeting.

and how long does the quidco take to track?

How much Payg Phones have you bought from 3? and why so many?
#15
OK, just been doing a little research:

Seems that if you ask 3, they will tell you that skypein works - when in fact it does not work and won't work. Boo! Hiss!

Skype in works - no additional costs.

My brother calls me from New Zealand on Skype on the mobile - works well.

OOOPPPs - skypein is different from receiving Skype calls - sorry

Quidco tracks within 24 hours, but takes a few months to be paid.

150mb lasts me for around 2-3 months if I don't plug the phone into the laptop and use it as a 3G modem. I only facebook on it maybe 20 times a day and check hotmail etc...

A £5 top up gets you another 150mb... (as well as of course 5 pounds to use on calls)

The boo hiss was directed at 3 for telling people that skype in functionality works - when it does not. Could be costly for anyone who takes the advice from 3 and takes a contract with them expecting skypein to work.
#21
Can this be easily unlocked? Wanna use it with a foreign sim card.

Cheers.
#22
skypein loopholes exist... google them.

My OH recieves family calls from the states to her 3 skype phone. They use skype, landline and non 3 mobiles. Thats all she uses it for. She has a contract phone with another network for regular stuff.

Would anyone recommend this over the Skypephone S2 ? ( which I was going to buy next week)

I have a Skypephone S2, which I really like.
I have the mini 3G on order, but it seems to be taking a while to come - I'll post up my thoughts when it arrives.

It means dealing with three which is dire. Speaking to someone whose first language is not English on a phone with a poor signal resulted in spending more than my monthly 200 mins speaking to people in India. The longest call was 110 mins.

Three had claimed in areas of poor coverage my phone would drop onto the 2G network. However, this only happened manually and lasted a couple of mins. So you could make an outgoing call but could not receive incoming unless you knew the call was about to arrive (to change your phone settings).

Three claimed their maps showing coverage said I was in a strong signal area - then the team in india said they could see I had almost no coverage. When asked why their map on the site did not show this - they said it did not have to - as it had a disclaimer saying it was not accurate.

As Three had to be told to stop gluing sims into phones (to prevent their being used on networks that work - which other companies have that much trouble with people wanting to leave?) - then its likely to be difficult to unlock.

HOWEVER.

I gave two S2 phones that I could not use (they worked in a holiday house I was renovating - which are pretty nice phones) to my nephews. Its great as the coverage is so poor I never need to buy them top ups. - But they play music and work as cameras pretty well - taking a 4gig micro SD card.

ALSO

Quidco tracked on all 3x phones originally - only one was paid out - one was declined - and they eventually agreed to pay on the other - but its been 7 months now without seeing it.

i think these are £29.99 anyway in the '3' store in the Ilford shopping centre next to M&S on the first floor..advertised in the window as such !

Got mine and it is going back. Screen flickers all the time.

Spoke to some clown in India and gave up as they are another race who think they out English the English and speak better than we do. Then found a number in the UK with the delivery documentation and spoke to a girl who is sending a new one out before I send the old one back and it will arrive in 2 days.

Skype works great. I have Skype out.

Battery is good, phone seems ok. Changing text is Nokia like and thus "right". It feels heavy and solid and quality. I'm only in it for the Skype so as long as it does that I'm happy.

I can't get a 3 costing that comes close to my Vectone 5p calls and SMS

I have a question:
If I do the following:
get 2 of these phones.
get 2 free 3 pay as you go sims.
put a sim in each of the phones.

Can the 2 phones be used to call eachother free of charge, forever (on skype)? Or do I have to top up the pay as you go at certain intervals?

Yes, that would work. You would never have to top up. I intend only using Skype and just chucking £5 or £10 on it for an emergency. Eventually, I'll migrate the use of Skype on a mobile to a phone running unlimited internet on a SIM only or contract, probably on a different network. Just a cheap option for me at the moment to use my Skype out subscription on the move.

Is there a cheaper deal anywhere to get free phone to phone calls if I buy two phones? I don't care how good the phones are as long as I can do free phone to phone.

Scotty, do you work for 3?

Also, to Scotty (assuming he works for 3 or knows a lot about 3's services), are these about the cheapest phones that we can use to make free (skype) calls? Like another user above stated, I have no need for any fancy gadgetry - all I need is the cheapest way to make calls from 2, skype phones, 3 to 3.

These phones are working out at £40-£18 = £22/phone. Anything cheaper for skype to skype, free phone calls?

Hi,

I definately don't work for 3 but can answer your question. The cheapest Skype phone is £29.99 + £18.00 cash back through Quidco or Top Cashback makes the phone just £11.99. You get free Skype calls with no need to top up.

http://threestore.three.co.uk/payg/default.aspx

If you are ordering 2 phones make sure you place 2 different orders to recieve the £36.00 cash back.

Thanks for the info.

I would've ended up ordering the 2 phones, in a single order, so you just saved me £18. I've already got the sims...all I need is the phone(s).

How are the ZTE F102 phones. Are these nice and reliable for making skype calls? I don't want them to break down on me.

Those phones are rubbish. The INQ one before this one was better but also not good enough. This one seems it might be up to the job.
