Skype lets you call - or chat - with any of your mates who are also on Skype anywhere in the world, anytime. Totally free. If you're a Pay As You Go user just top up every month to keep your phone active.
It's really easy to use, too. Just hit the Skype button to connect to more than 246 million users on the Skype network and away you go. For as long as you like. Without paying a penny extra.
Your Skype phone also lets you
Land on Planet 3

It's what makes 3 so 3. It's where you play games. Watch TV. Get the latest gossip and news. See the football highlights Youll be surprised, maybe even shocked, at how much there is.
Surf the web

Not the ordinary Web, mind, but the Mobile Web. The one with content that's scaled down to the size of your screen - to make surfing on your mobile that much easier, faster and better.
Play your music

It's what youd expect from any self-respecting mobile nowadays. Except that the 3 SkypePhone also connects you to the 3 MusicStore, where you can take your pick from over 500,000 tracks.

So how much does it cost to top up each month? Presumably you could subscribe to Skype and then make all your calls (to landlines etc too) through Skype if you wanted?
#2
Does any1 know what's the OS on the phone ?
#3

As far as I'm aware no you can't with mobile skype you can only call other skype users - presumably it would cost too much if you made all your calls through skype - the mobile operator would get no money!

Can anyone else confirm this?
#7
Well I just had a look and Skype isn't really that cheap anyway. About the same as a landline (15p/min to mobiles, 0845/0870 about 10p/min, landlines about 1.5p/min). As 3 PAYG is only 12p/min anyway it's only good if you call lots of normal landlines, and most big companies use 0845/0870 these days (but theres always saynoto0870.com of coarse!)

I'll go for another cashback deal, but hot deal if you're on 3 anyway.
#8
Sorry but you say in the op that it is a pay as you go! is this not more of a pay monthly phone if you have top credit £10 a month? sure one of you would be able to answer that for me.ta
#9
The great thing about Skype is that its permanently free for Skype to Skype. So if you use from PC/laptop/PDA no cost at all
#10
surely the point of this is you switch to 3 if you aren't already on 3. The you get all your mates and family on to 3 and then you can all speak to each other for free using the skype function on your phone. you will pay line rental if on a contract and will probably have a minimum top up to keep the payg service going but this deal seems fantastic if you can convince the people you call most often to switch. It is also a good deal if you have friends and family abroad where this service should be rolled out soon because you will be able to make international skype calls free (skype to skype).

When all the hype around skype started the main threat was to mobile phone operators as by connecting to the internet using your phone you would be able to make cheaper and even free calls - meaning mobile phone operators can no longer rip everyone off (especially on international calls). The more the internat rolls out the less attractive paying for a phone line will be and it will not surprise me if mobile phones are bundled with other services such as broadband and all calls are made using the internet.

It will be interesting to see how this does - imagine big companies with lots of employees on the road (or abroad) that need to keep in touch - this should save them a fortune (if I have understood the product properly)?
#11
Just to be complete. They will also offer contract for the skypephone - which I presume WILL be quite cheap. I don't know whether the phones are subsidised (if not, expect other white branded services... *****gTalk***** or MSN VoIP;-). Finally, the launch is for the 2nd of November as far as I remember.

I would agree but most of the network's "pay as you go" tarrifs now require a monthly top up unfortunately. "Pre-pay" is probably a better description for these types of tarrif's really.

I've got a copy of Fring on my 3 phone and can readily place calls to GoogleTalk and Windows Live destinations.

(The X-series add-on for £5 a month is a worthwhile subscription.)

Seconded - I have Fring, and works particularly well in conjunction with my N80's WiFi connection

Actually I may be wrong. I thought Orange did for starters because I was looking at it the other day. Looking at it again I think you get a bonus if you top up a certain amoutn each month, but the credit doesn't actually expire.

This suggests 02 requires £10 top-up each month but it doesn't specificallyy say so on the tariff details page.

http://www.o2.co.uk/mobilestariffs/tariffs/paygo/paygotariffs

As with most UK services, the pricing system seems to have got more complicated in the last few years...and consequently I'm quote confused!!
#17
I'm confused I have an x series nokia n73 with 3 which has skype, so can I now make skype - out calls on this ? and do I need to have the £5 per month internet ? previously I could receive incoming skype calls but not make outgoing then about a month ago, it stopped working 3 said I needed to have the £5 pm internet which I have done but wonder if I need this now ?

from the faq

Can you use SkypeOut? If not, Why?

The 3 Skypephone does not support Skype Out, as 3 already provides you with great value calling to normal phone numbers around the world.

So nope, you can only call people with a Skype username; if they allowed you to use Skype on your phone to call regular landlines / mobiles they wouldn't make any money :p

anyone know if you top £10 a month this includes internet access or do you have to spend an extra £5 a month on top?

Someone on MSE has written that the £10 can include internet access, can't verify this myself.

Anyone else think this looks like a Belkin wi-fi phone?
#26
I thought it was a Nokia at first!!!

I'm tempted to get one and sell my current handset as the battery life is poor. I'm just curious to know what the UI is like on it.
The feature list is quite impressive for a < £50 mobile!

I'd quite like a new phone to replace my 6630 on 3 but I wonder if I bought the PAYG I could avoid the top up as I have a contract already?

Where's the specs BTW?

That's the boat I'm in and the sale rep from the Kingston store said that it wouldn't be a problem. I don't think you'll be able to make use of the Skype/internet unless you change your price plan.

Too bad as I'm on £5 for 300+150 at the moment and I don't really want to change.

Hmm - is there a minimum contract for the PAYG? I'm thinking of buying one then using it with my contract simcard with three.
Do I have to register my details when buying this phone or can I just buy it and not register?

Thanks for any help!

Hi guys,

I'm from the 3mobilebuzz team and I'll try to answer any questions you have regarding the Skype phone. The FAQ has already been referenced in the thread, but if there is anything not covered let me know.

As has already been stated, on PAYG you merely top up the phone with credit and get 30 days of Skype to Skype minutes (up to 4000) so you can talk to anyone else with Skype on their PC or Skype 3 mobile. If you have credit left over after 30 days this obviously rolls over, but you will need to top up again to get another 4000 Skype minutes.
#35
@ matt

I have an existing contract and have been told by CS that I can buy the PAYG version and swap the SIM to my existing contract for an additional £5 a month is that correct? Also the additional £5 isn't a new contract and I can cancel any time?

no just to new mix and match customers from 1st october

I got my new Skypephone on three today and what can I say? This truly is an excellent handset.
Small, light, big and clear screen and has loads of features.

I had a Nokia N80r previously but the phone's battery was pants. I ended up buying a spare battery and constantly charging the two. I'm also stuck in contract for another 11 months on a £35 (1/2 price for 18 months!).

I saw this handset on this post and did a little research. Most of the reviewers were happy with theirs so I thought I would give it a go.

Popped my sim card in and it worked fine. Not too bothered about the Skype bit, just wanted a smaller phone with better battery. I didn't expect all the extra features that came with it.

Edit: Found one of the reviews:

Got some very good reviews not just for Skype but general handset functionality.... might be in the market for one of these!

According to Quidco you get £20 cashback on Skype mobiles through 3. Anyone know whether this applies to PAYG or just contract phones?
