Long time lurker; first deal posted - be gentle with me :-)
I was looking to buy a TomTom 750 Live but was put off by the £8 / month subscription. This is the service where the TomTom unit has a Vodafone SIM card in it to receive and contribute to the traffic information. It also gives other "Live" services. I had seen that some retailers had offered a 50% discount on an annual subscription. Then I found this - a free 12m subscription if you buy one of the devices within the dates - extract from Ts&Cs below:

# The offer is for a 12 month subscription to TomTom LIVE Services.
# This offer is exclusively for customers of TomTom UK purchasing a new TomTom GO 950 LIVE, TomTom GO 750 LIVE, TomTom GO 550 LIVE, XL LIVE IQ Routes UK & ROI or the XL LIVE IQ Routes Europe, from participating retailers between 18th February 2010 and 6th April 2010 inclusive.
# The 12 month LIVE services offer assumes commencement immediately following the "Out of the Box" LIVE services offer.

Apply by printing out a web form, attaching a photocopy of the receipt and send to TomTom by 6th May 2010 at the latest.

In a way it's a Freebie, but I have categorised it as a Hot Deal since you have to have bought a satnav first.

Brilliant deal! And an excellent first post!

I have the TT940 and it is excellent! If I hadn't just bought a 12 month sub I would have gone for this and sold the 940. A friend is after one so I will let him know.

Heat & Rep for posting.

Would this work with a Tom Tom Classic XL?
#3
No because it is not a LIVE enabled device.

Thanks aerotec. I have saved myself a fortune by using deals found on this site, so I was pleased to stumble upon this one to share.

Looking for a Sat Nav for the car. Anyone got any good deals on any of the selected TomTom devices this deal applies to?

Thanks

checks the prices of sat navs and shows the best deals each day

If you're not worried about the Live I highly recommend the refurb Go910 we got recommended via this site. It's an older model but a great price if you're not worried about the Live functions.

I've had a look at the Tom Tom site to understand what is different with their Live system. I can see two different traffic updates. Both cost.

TomTom Traffic™ gives you real-time traffic reports, as well as advice on the best alternative routes to avoid the jams. You can even get updates on dangerous road conditions ahead, delivered straight to your TomTom device. @ 29.95 per year

OR

TomTom LIVE Services
If you would like to receive the latest traffic information as often as every few minutes, with even more detailed coverage, then why not have a look at TomTom HD Traffic™? This highly accurate traffic information is sent straight to your TomTom device - without you having to connect or activate a thing. @£7.99 per month.

I have the Navigon 4130Max. it seems to offer similar to the Tom Tom and is on Special Offer in Amazon here. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Navigon-4310Max-Satellite-Navigation-System/dp/B001UJF4OM/. Much cheaper than a Tom Tom

Technical Details state as well as other things
Lifetime Traffic Information and re-routing feature

So I've paid no subscription and had the unit for nearly a year. It tells me about all the traffic holdups. I think I bought a winner! I'd recommend a Navigon cheaper and well equipped. I can't comment on the Tom Tom as I've never used one.

For more info the 4130 Max I would say is similar to XL LIVE IQ Routes™ Europe

Gonna have a proper look around then. How up-2-date are the maps and do they offer pc/mac software to update the maps/speed camera etc? Doesn't say much on Amazon

I have a PocketGPSWorld subscription for "safety" camera POIs which I can easily copy into a TomTom. For Navigon, they say
"Some Navigon devices can use our database if 3rd party (paid for) software is installed", which isn't encouraging...

I do have the camera details. It seems up to date to me. Only driven past one camera with no warning. But then I haven't updated my maps just yet. Yes PC software. Not sure Mac. More details here http://navigon.com/portal/int/karten_services/index.html

The maps supplied were 2nd or 3rd quarter 2009. I have an update of 2009 Q4 to download via Fresh Maps which I believe is a 24 month subscription. from when I registered. So you can buy and update right away for free.

Which is starting to sound better than this Tom Tom deal? :whistling:

The important thing to note with HD Traffic is that it is a unique system that monitors Vodafone devices as they change from cell to cell. Algorithms then work out if it is a moving vehicle, the road it is on and the speed it is travellin at. It can then generate accurate traffic information and send this to HD Live devices. To see the data on a map just go to routes.tomtom.com.

The other services such as the TMC traffic use data supplied from the highways agency, police etc and this may be slightly more delayed and not as accurate as HD Traffic.

I have seen myself join the tail end of queuing traffic just where TomTom HD Traffic said it would start queuing from. I should have followed the reroute it suggested.

Another excellent feature is Google searching. So you can look for, say, Costco in Manchester and then it brings up results as if it was on internal memory. Then just select it to start navigating there. That is actually as useful, if not more, than the traffic service.

If you decide not to keep HD Traffic after the year then the devices will still support RDS-TMC traffic via a plug in cable that you can get on eBay for around £25, or for ongoing subscriptions just keep a look out on eBay. I got a 12 month renewal card for £60 and they pop up quite often at that price.
