Strikes me as a good deal too - why all the cold votes?
#2
I have to say this is a good deal, I had tiscali about a year ago - very good service. Voted Hot.
#3
I was a Tiscali customer for 4 years until I finally had enough of them and cancelled my account. They are a absolute nightmare.Connection speed was rubbish,Technical support (If you could call it that) was abysmal.Wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy. They have always been cheap but you really only do get what you pay for.

Oh yeah.trying to leave them is fun too.YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !

Do not go near tiscali/orange/pipex/plusnet they are all horrendous
#5
People... be a bit more accurate.
For you it may be rubbish.

I have had tiscali years and it has been excellent. I have had no speed issues, and on only 1 occasion has the net been down (for a few hours)>

I would recommend them to anybody.

But like all ISP;s, I guess some areas are worse than others
#6
Well in percentage to good users experience versus bad those i posted above are pretty much the worst

pipex are good for billing errors
tiscali its usually lack of customer service same with orange

But it isn't that hard to find out who's good and bad

Ive a friend who loves tiscali, it's just a bit of pot luck if you do get a good solid connection
#7
hi dont touch them if you use p2p there fair use policy is a joke and if you try to leave it a night mare they dont give mac codes out will take at least 2 weeks with no way to conect id rather go on dail up than touch tiscali

Cheap and nasty - please avoid

Yes, you leave them, go with another provider and they still insist that you are their customers still

Its been a six month nightmare for my 82 year old mother

I am with Tiscali and will be leaving them at the end of the 12 month contract, absolutely dreadful - and expensive customer services, and even after my mother gave my details to act on her behalf - they have no record of it, Dreadful company, I wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy. And by the way - they have had no e-mail service for 2 weeks - but you don't know your e-mails have not been received by the other party - only received e-mail today to say there was a problem ( but I have known for a couple of weeks) which they have resolved ( no they haven't......)

I was using tiscali on their provided USB modem and that time the speed was pathetic..intermittent...disconnected 1000 times a day...

now I have Linksys WAG200G and connected to same tiscali and no more disconnection and slow speed...

Tiscali is rocking :)

Sorry to be the spector of doom, but had an incredibly bad/stressful experience with Tiscali at the beginning of the year, with Broadband & phone services. I was seduced by the great price but learnt that I'd rather pay over the odds for a better adsl and customer service.

Obviously some ppl are pleased with their service but I'd recommend searching the internet for other ppls experiences with Tiscali, I did, (too late) and it wasn't all good.

I don't post very often but I feel compelled to add my bit about Tiscali. I didn't have any problem with connection or speed, but they took eight weeks to transfer their broadband service when I moved home. They offered to refund my subscription fee for the period without the service, which I accepted, unfortunately that took another six months to resolve. I then moved home again (RAF  ) taking my telephone number with me. This process should have taken 20 working days. After 100 days, 35 phone calls, 3 letters from me (no reply from Tiscali) following their grievance procedure to the letter and I also sought advice from Ofcom/Oftel I finally managed to get through to their 'High Level Complaints Department'. I found the number for this department by shear chance, it is based within Tiscali head office in Soho, London. Even though Tiscali had not provided any kind of broadband service at my new house they placed a ‘marker’ on the line which meant no other ISP could claim the line. Twenty two hours after that phone call the marker was removed.

I also found the quality of customer support questionable, ranging from the accusation of the whole issue being my fault, to the extreme of me being told that I was stupid.

I apologise for having a rant but even a year on I can not recommend the Tiscali ‘experience’.

Terry.

Ps. Sorry to the OP, just wanted to explain my cold vote.

tiscali bad?

you ought to try sky - a complete nightmare!

Wont be available for me until December!
I live in that small out of the way place called Manchester!
#15
Yes support is useless, an Indian call centre who tell you that your connection problems are due to cookies.

And connection speeds are a nightmare, me 128 meters from exchange, and a new line got 0.2 meg on speedtests, torrents were useless(as they block them) and so on

My last and new isp give me 6.8 meg downloads and fast torrenting.
#16
I wouldn't use this ISP for gaming.
#17
Tiscali have the highest recorded complaints record of all ISP's over at ISP Review Forum.

Absolute nightmare.

I cant get it til September, being in Leeds centre usually gets you services faster not on this i guess.

On a technical note. You will be at great risk of being LLU'd (Local Loop Unbundled) with Tiscali. This means that your phone line is disconnected from BT equipment and connected to Tiscali's own.

Once this happens you cannot change your broadband provider without getting the phone line moved back to BT first of all. So be warned, if you become dissatisfied with their broadband (which lots of people are) you will have great difficulty changing.

See www.ispreview.co.uk/review/top10.php for the highest rated providers of broadband.

If you'd mentioned tiscali to me a couple of weeks ago I'd have said great, never had a problem - but then like another poster said, I was unable to send emails for over a week and it wasn't them that told me there was a problem. I deleted a ton of stuff off my pc thinking it must be a problem at my end and then subsequently checked out their service page which told me all services were running fine. Eventually I rang their helpdesk at 50p a minute and the guy took me through a huge palava to check if my email was working only to eventually tell me it must be a problem with the tiscali server and he'd had lots of other calls saying the same thing! (dreading the bill when it comes!).

I received the official email notifying me of this only yesterday and incidentally, the emails I sent weren't stuck in the system, they're obviously lost forever.
#21
Tiscali used to have a reputation at the worst broadband provider both in terms of up-time and customer service.

that said, I've not checked out the forums over at http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ for quite a while so things might have changed.

edit: umm, from some of the other replies, maybe not ;)
#22
i was on tiscali for 3 days then rang up they gave me my mac and i left.

they even refunded most of that months bill.

i left due to packet shaping + as it had a 14 day cooling off period i migrated to another isp without having to pay a connection fee or have a contract.

the connection was unstable and the pings were pretty poor so i would not reccomend them for anything but basic web browsing and id pushed to reccomend them for that.

someone on another forum actually had his line migrated to tiscali llu months after he had migrated away from tiscali.

sorry for those who had bad experience. for me i regretted it since swtiching over to sky. my tiscali was on 1Mb and has been very consistent. sky tends to cut me off even in the middle of browsing internet or downloading a file. However, it could be that I have only been connected to sky for less than a month

Wiltonson - Have a look over on skyuser.co.uk - if your line keeps dropping, you may need to turn off upnp - this is a known issue with the netgear router.

For me, Tiscali were great until they began rolling out their 8 meg service, when they totally screwed up my line, and I went from a steady 2.5meg to approx 250k!! I then went to Virgin, which was an even bigger mistake!

I'm now with Sky and have been really impressed - constant 7.5meg connection, no traffic shaping or throttling - FAB!!

monster monster!

Tiscali Email was down for over a week last week for a large percentage of Tiscali customers. They even denied there was a problem at first.

Their service status page always says everything is fine when it clearly isn't.

http://forums.computing.co.uk/thread.jspa?threadID=110719

I am an ex-Tiscali customer from before they took over, and things are still just as bad as they ever were.
#28
This is the best deal, it was 17.99 per month up until 31st May, that was better, should've posted it then.
#29
the £17.99 did not include the line rental (was £10.99) I know because thats the one i went on!
Still waitting to get my 5 meg speed you should get in this area, but it seems to range from 0.5 to 1 but they tell me that they are still turning on my uprgrade! (around 7 weeks ago I switched) sniff sniff i smell something there!

p.s sorry about the rant
#30
Tiscali = rubbish,

Tried to upgrade my account in Jan to the 8mb max, still waiting.

Have got sick of talking to clueless buffoons on their helplines so got my mac code and am off to pastures new
#31
Good luck they are awful for leaving.
#32
EVERYONE WAS RIGHT ABOUT THEIR AWFUL TECHNICAL SUPPORT!!!

Luckily I do know quite a bit about computers, networking and the Internet, so when the man on the 'phone said I had to wait and it would all suddenly be there I demanded a supervisor. As the supervisor was also pretty useless, I asked to speak to someone with some technical knowledge. Eventually I got through to someone who talked me through the IP addresses I needed for my equipment to access Tiscali Broadband and everything is just fine now.

I will let you know how I get on with getting my £30 setup charge and telephone call charges refunded ;-)
#33
I upgraded from 1MB to 2MB broadband and asked the support people about the free phone line rental in the offer for £14.99. They said it was not available in my area (SE London) but I should call again mid July.
I checked the Tiscali website and it would appear the area I am in may not be connected for over a year. Anyway, should they not have it available I shall have to switch as there are deals to be had and I would rather not pay BT £10.99 for line rental if I would get a lot more for a little bit extra.
If I remember a post correctly, July 1st sees some new Sky offers, free equipment etc and set up costs could be offset by the Quidco fee - and for £14.99 I get Sky One and broadband. So come on Tiscali, improve yourselves.
