"Gobble-gobble...we accept her...one of us," goes the haunting chant of Freaks. Yet it would be decades before this widely banned morality play gained acceptance as a cult masterpiece.

Tod Browning (1931's Dracula) directs this landmark movie in which the true freaks are not the story's sideshow performers, but "normals" who mock and abuse them. Browning, a former circus contortionist, cast real-life sideshow professionals. A living torso who nimbly lights his own cigarette despite having no arms or legs, microcepalics (whom the film calls "pinheads") - they and others play the big-top troupers who inflict a terrible revenge on a trapeze artist who treats them as subhumans. In 1994, Freaks was selected for the National Film Registry's archive of cinematic treasures.

Fabulous film - I don't think they could make it today, but it is a great, if disturbing, document of the once 'great' American Sideshow - a real window into history
#12
There is an actor in this film who has no legs and walks around using his hands, and he was the inspiration for R2D2 in Star Wars. I kid you not.

Thanks, have ordered it. Never seen it before. According to Rewind.net the original version presented to test audiences ran 90+ minutes, but was deemed "too horrific" so was cut to 60+ minutes, and the footage is not now known to exist. Wonder what it contained.

Saw this many years ago - very disturbimg - once seen never ever forgotten!

A bit like Eraserhead but much much worse because the people are real!

BTW I'd worry if I had a GF like yours!
