This six-disc box set draws together all six volumes of the Tom and Jerry Classic Collection and is packed with nearly nine hours of cartoon capers from everyone's favourite cat and mouse.
Volume 1
Collecting together the works of each producer, Classic Collection Volume 1 starts with the cartoons of the great Fred Quimby and also includes the Hanna Barbera years 1940-1958. Hollywood legend Quimby is largely regarded as creator of the very best Tom and Jerry episodes. He won seven Academy Awards for various Tom and Jerry shorts and received numerous nominations for his animated works.
Volume 2
Tom and Jerry Classic Collection Volume 2continues with the works of Hollywood legend Fred Quimby, who worked closely with Hanna Barbera and together they set the high standard of animation, music, timing and humour for which Tom and Jerry are renowned. Classic Collection 2 includes the Academy Award-winning cartoon shorts "The Cat Concerto" and "The Little Orphan", the Academy Award-nominated "Dr Jekyll and Mr Mouse" and "Hatch Up Your Troubles", plus 20 other classics.
Volumes 3 and 4
Tom and Jerry Classic Collections 3 and 4 brings together the works of Hollywood legends Fred Quimby, Gene Deitch, Chuck Jones and Hanna Barbera, the dream team who presented the pair at their brawling best and won 7 Academy Awards along the way. Volumes 5 and 6 of the Tom and Jerry collection features 58 cartoons, each packed with yet more crazy cat and mouse antics. As Tom and Jerry collections go, this takes some beating.

Interesting comments in the reviews about it not being a complete collection and how some episodes have been edited and over-dubed.
#5
I got it ages ago, missing some classics which I feel should have made it over some of the earlier stuff ... Oh well still full of massive laughs and at that price well worth it!
#6
These would be fantastic if they remained 'uncut' I was going to get them for my lad, but i'll give these a miss after reading the reviews

Political correctness - I'd like to slap each and every one of them.
#7
Why does it say "complete" in the title when it clearly doesn't say "complete" on the box and it clearly isn't complete?

COLD.

Get it for you boy, its still much better than the crap they show on tv today, and its a proper cartoon regardless of the PC!

My kids love Tom and Jerry, but have worn out the DVD we do have on long trips down south in the car. This could be just the ticket.

Are you kidding me? They've not only cut an Oscar-winning work, but they've overdubbed the voice of the maid? Are they ****ing serious though? That shout of "THOOMMAAAAAAAS!" is as iconic as the characters themselves. What a load of crap, I was seconds away from snapping this up but I refuse to pay for classics butchered for reason other than political correctness which is one of the banes of our society. Shove it.

The whole Tom and Jerry DVD release has been a bit of an international fiasco, IIRC. There was a similar uproar in the States, and some of the discs were replaced with the original versions but not all. We have some uncut/undubbed cartoons in our releases (in this set) that America still has cut, and vice-versa. There's a website somewhere I googled a while ago that listed which sets you had to buy internationally to get the best ratio of uncut to cut, but at work so can't find it now...

As a T&J purist I refuse to buy this set on principle, however it is still a good price for this set but personally I'd avoid it at all costs.

For the kids I would say this is a good deal though.

I read somewhere that they REPAINTED the African-American housemaid Mammy as white in the 60s (the classic Tom & Jerry shorts) which is crazy! "Her voice was redubbed by Turner in the mid-1990s in hopes of making the character sound less stereotypical; the resulting accent sounded more Irish." (from Wiki).

It's a real shame these are edited to bits, but this has been a deal a few times and my niece absolutely adores T&J.

How can you be PC about something which is basically technicolour, animated ultra-violence (funny, nonetheless). It's so stupid. They're classics, they shouldn't be touched!!

If someone can put the link to the DVD(s) with the best ratio of undubbed/unedited shorts, I'd be interested in buying them as a treat for my niece.

Thought about buying this a while ago but the careless editting overdubbing and cut scenes (with some cartoons making nosense reported by some owners) leaves this bundle a bit cold imo.

Got this a few months ago from HMV when it was £10.
Some of the best cartoons ever, my 3 year old wont stop watching them.
They have cut a few scenes, but thats what type of stupid times we live in these days.

Hot btw!

Can you still buy the uncut orginal volumes?

p.s why does the image top left show "Volumes 1 & 6" instead of Volumes 1-6?

I was so disappointed when I got this and as of yet there's no way to get the episodes uncut. The PC overdubbing and cutting doesn't even make sense because they leave in lots of blackface and 'oriental' visual gags but dub over Mammy's iconic voice really badly

The reviews tell you a bit more about edited and cut scenes (makes me sad reading them, really). Soo loved T&J from a baby..the only cartoon back then which made her stop in her tracks and get excited when she heard the theme music!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/B000I0QSOO/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1 Example: "The worst offender is the Oscar-winning "The Little Orphan", in which the whole climactic sequence has had to be butchered and re-edited - ruined, really - to accommodate the excision of a blackface gag. (Oddly though, "Mouse Cleaning" and "Casanova Cat", the two cartoons with the most blatant blackface gags, are included unscathed. If you want to get upset by a 50-year old cartoon, there's your chance.)". Someone mentions there's an uncut "Complete Collection", alas only available on VHS. Again, if anyone knows of a DVD option, I'd love to know :)

Quite heart-warming today's kids still love them so much. HAD to buy her it the other Xmas though as she really does adore them and has played them again and again..

It must be a scene when the PC brigade have their huddle just before starting work in the morning:

"OK, guys, can you come over here a moment, please: today we have a matter of the utmost urgency regarding some old naughty cat and mouse cartoon threatening our Victorian-disguised-as-21st century family values! We must pasteurize it thoroughly for the sake of avoiding offending other weirdos just like ourselves!"

What ay pathetic bunch these PC people must be... :p

So is this rubbish then?

No; it's ace - just a tad frustrating for us old ones in a few places due to the very odd edits

The Region 1-only "Signature Collection" is as close to uncut as you're likely to get - even then, there's a mix of prints used in the collection - there were reports that some of the dubbed versions of Mammy were used due to "error", before being corrected in later prints of the series. They cost about £30 a set from Amazon though, very pricey. I'd have a look on eBay if you're really bothered. I recall reading this set has the uncut version of The Little Orphan but two episodes have been left out entirely for PC reasons

Of course, political correctness is a ridiculous reason to edit any work of film - if you're so sensitive that you're going to be offended BY A CARTOON, don't watch it. I wonder what the do-gooding PC brigade would make of Gran Torino or American History X?
