why did they drop bluetooth?

why did they drop bluetooth?

a) The features dropped would have cost money to include
b) It will force buyers to look at the more expensive versions
c) TomTom have a history of gradually removing features, their pda version gets worse with each release.

Still seems like a good deal to me but I do find it sad that the value of TomTom products seems to decrease with each new version.

Nectar reward points scheme is offering a Tom Tom ONE for only 20,200 points (half the usual amount) Not sure which version it is but it states it has bluetooth in the specs.

Maps for GB/Ireland in this version.

Looks like a good deal if you have enough points.

Sorry....now SOLD OUT!

why did they drop bluetooth?

The bluetooth performance on the 510 is woeful anyway. Its almost impossible to have a conversation using it, which defeats the object.

Also, as mentioned earlier the TMC option is not much use. I tested it on my 510 on a trip from Liverpool to Dover and it was not functioning more than it was functioning. Even when it was on, it didn't alert me to any of the issues we came across. In fact, one time it alerted us and there was nothing there!

However, I've got to say that the software and reliability are excellent and I'm glad I bought one.

Is it just me, or are the TomToms really over-priced for what they are. My dad recently bought a Navman and it's packed with features... and for less than a TomTom. Seems like you're paying for the name these days?

Mmmm i have a 510 and talking via the unit is crisp and clear. Maybe you got a faulty one.

FIL bought a Navman and i thought it was pants compared to a tomtom one , it didnt even have a roadblock feature incase of a traffic jam.

No, it wasn't just me. There was a thread at the AV Forums website a while ago and a lot of people complained about the quality. Mine was like Norman Collier - that's a good check of your age! :giggle:

Maybe it works better with some phones than others...who knows?

i bought the V3 the other day from comet for £149.99, i would have ordered it online cheaper but i needed it the next day

have to say i am very impressed with it, it shows speed cameras aswell (not that i would need that :whistling: )

voted hot :)

Personally I wouldn't bother with the V3 its a dumbed down version of the V2 and doing away with the Bluetooth is just a big mistake on Tomtoms part as the TMC is bl**dy rubbish and just doesn't work and never has properly in the UK...:-(

I have the V2 and traffic using my mobile and Bluetooth and its brilliant...the V3 is just a backward step and no SD card either is a big no no, Like someone else said its just to make you buy the more expensive models that have the features the cheaper models should already have anyway...

If you can, try and get the V2 lots still in the shops and ebay..

Having spent a frustrating time trying to assist a 3rd Edition owner who couldn't locate the Itinerary Planning option I have now had it confirmed by TomTom that the 3rd Edition lacks this feature.

I'm now awaiting confirmation of what other features have been dropped but this is very bad news. It's also very concerning that this has been slipped in (or out!) surreptitiously. There is also unconfirmed reports that it will not support custom POIs.

Taken from a quote from the PGPSW website..

Ditching the external antenna connection is a mistake. I've located my V2 off the dash, away from prying eyes.
Oh well, the V2 might be a bit of a bargain.

My V2 just continuously drops of my screen...very annoying.

It's now over two weeks and waiting to receive my replacement screen mount from TomTom.

Ours had the same the problem (I doubt if a new one will be any better) its that it cant take the curvature of the screen I bought an aftermarket one that looks like the Go300/500 mount it is like a limpet and worth getting. Do a flebay search for
"tomtom v2 mount" and you will see them.

Cheers, i'll have a search for one.

I've had a Garmin and a Navman before and their screen mounts clamped on with a lever you pushed down. The TomTom One V2 screen mount you just have push on and it seems to have woefully inadequate suction for the weight and size of the device it has to hold.

Is this serious? They really dropped the SD card slot? What the hell for lol

Probably because most people never used it.

As long as there's room on the in-built memory for adding some POI overlayers etc I can't see it being a big problem.

But how do you change maps with the V3? With the V2 I change between UK and European maps by changing the SD card.

Not sure about your car but mine was always falling off (on a 306) so i just balance the bottom of the unit on the top of the dash) and have it suctioned on the screen as well just to the left of the driver side A pillar, not a problem since (now using a phone version with a cheap holder and works fine)

It's funny that when I rang TomTom about the screen mount dropping off they acted all surprised and said that they'd "never known it to happen before". Then when I rang them two weeks later asking why I hadn't received it they said that "they'd had loads go missing in the post".

So which is it I wonder? I'm the only one it's ever happened to, or they're sending loads out in the post just for fun?
#23
Is there a subscription to pay on these here satellite navigators?
#24
No, only if you want the extra services from TomTom.

Just a quick note, managed to get this from The Link online for £129. £139, with the GPS1 voucher code that gives £10 off!

Not sure how really...

The comment I quoted is inaccurate.

At a guess he may be talking about either screen rotation (built into windows mobile 2003SE onwards anyway), or Long/Lat navigation (still there but in a different place).

Other than that I can't think of any feature that has been taken off the PDA version.

Ok then...
Where are the customisable road speeds?
How do I rearrange the menu system into something that doesn't require more screen presses to use?
Which menu lets me set the buttons on my pda to carry out common actions?
Where do I download new versions of the 3rd party software that was written for v3?
#30
The Itinerary planning is also missing from the V3.

I have just brought one for £149.99 and i am gutted about this.

Anyone near enfield have a version 2 with a receipt that would like to swap with me?.

Right firstly, the menu can be edited as with any other PDA version.

Btw: I'm talking Windows Mobile here.

The rest: I'm confused. What do you mean, what are "customisable road speeds" , what software are you taking about, and what are you expecting? 3rd party apps are by default not made by tomtom!

There isn't an in program option to change the order in the menus or to move options out of sub menus. If there is some alternative software that does this please point me at it.

Tomtom 3 on the pda (the last version written for pda's rather than converting over to them six months late) allowed you to change the speeds for each road type. Want the fastest route assuming you drive at 90mph on the motorway then you could have it. Equally if you wanted a nicer drive you could bump up the speed of country roads (Tomtom by default heavily favours motorways because it assumes you'll never travel at more than about 47mph on a nice clear straigh country road) and drop it on motorways and it will route you through the countryside. HGV drivers would do the reverse so that it would stick to the motorways, loosing this has made it all but useless to them.
It meant that after a few weeks of tweaking road speeds to suit you, travel time estimates were more accurate (and as a resulte so was the route planning).

Tomtom don't make 3rd party apps but they need to support them. They used to be very friendly to the add on community and as a result all sorts of extras were available e.g. an add in that detected speed cameras ahead of you, compared them to your speed and gave you a warning if you needed to slow down. All that is gone now.

And the standard four buttons on the front of a windows mobile pda could be set to any tomtom function. I could hit those safely without looking so it took two button presses to check for traffic and then recalculate a route if you want it. Now you have to hit the screen, select the traffic menu option, select the update traffic info button, hit the screen again after the update, select the find alternative sub menu and then select the avoid traffic option. Why have the buttons gone? Because the software is written for Tomtom hardware now which doesn't have those buttons and all they do is port over that dumbed down version with no customisation at all.

does not work that voucher

The V2 screen mount is the worst that i've ever come accross. Following an earlier posters tip, i've now got a generic one off Ebay and it's far better quality. It now feels like you'd have to use a tug of war team to pull it off, rather then just go over a few speed bumps.

Got mine through yesterday and loving it!
