Just bought a tomtom ONE XL GB from Currys in Ipswich for £149!

A nice lady in PC World pointed out that there is an error in the Currys MEGGA OFFERS brochure for the bank holiday weekend. On the front page it is offering the tomtom ONE XL GB for £149 (offer ends Tuesday).

We went next door and after a very short debate the Currys manager agreed to sell it to us at the advertised price.

So get there quickly before they get rid of the brochures....

I am gonna check at my local.
#2

#3
i think i got it via newspapers...but they are instore - brochure advertising tom tom 1 xl gb model.
#4

#5
they don't have to honour the deal, it's just an invitation to treat

Not in this case, it's not like the internet. They have to honour this price as they have it advertised in the national press and in-store.

If they refuse then they face a massive fine for false advertising and bringing customers through the doors under false pretences.

I noticed the brochure price too for £149 in The Curry's flyer that came with the Sun Newspaper this morning, so I took it to my local Curry store and showed them the brochure and asked for one. They said there's been a mistake on the flyer and that the price advertised was for the TomTom one not the TomTom one XL. He said he'd meet me half way at £175. I said isn't it false advertising and he replied leagally we don't have to sell it to you for £175 so not knowing legally where I stood, I took their offer of £175 as it normally retails for £200. The manager asked if he could keep the flyer and was soon on the phone to someone complaining of the misprint :-)

i would be QUICK
i just went to my selly oak branch, all the fliers had been taken from the stand , luckily they had been left on the side so i helped myself to one.

they tried to charge me £200 but they were then very swift at back tracking when i said about the flier and waved it infront of them.

the picture is of a tomtom1 NOT the xl, HOWEVER the description is that of the XL.

one of the staff was quite miffed, the other said that is what the price says give him the discount.

apparently i was the 8th today at currys selly oak.

they had some left so if anyone goes there and they pretend they are out of stock tell them to look in the LEFT side of the locked cabinet on the floor as that is where they are.

my medion pda sat nav went capputt a month ago, luckily within its 3 years, i need to take it back to aldi next week, hopefully for a refund ( it was £250), if not i will get it repaired free of charge or they have to give me the next one up.

so if im lucky, this was £149 and i will get £250 back on my old one.

heated and repped.

i cant stress enough that you must go today and get it, tomorrow morning WILL be too late as when i worked at a currys, there was a morning meeting every day and things like this would be discussed and the manager would instruct people to say " out of stock", despite being a pile of stock out the back.

the leaflets were on the left when you go in on top of the desk area right after the doors.

good luck
#9
oh , it is in a yellow box, the green one is the tomtom1 normal.
#10
Fantastic, managed to get one, the manager OK'd it no problem said we have to sell it as advertised! Thanks hotboy heat and rep added.
#11

have you read the posts? the answers you need are in the posts people have already made in this thread.;-)
#13
They don't have to honour the price - they can put a disclaimer up in store near the product referencing the error. Most companies also put a disclaimer in brochures saying "whilst every effort is made to make sure our prices are correct...." so that in the event of a misprint or mistake they can get out of it.

For the sake of £50 they would probably honour it though strictly speaking they don't have to. They can even take the hard line and remove it from sale completely for a few days.

TomTom One XL is just £169.99 on amazon

Don't buy from currys if offered £175!
#15
Well if its an error in the paper then its a howler on TV as they have just advertised it there... This woman in PC world is obviously talking baloney!

Which legislation are you quoting then? Only curious as I am a retired trading standards officer, and haven't heard of that one

It doesn't matter how much small print they use - if its clearly marked on advertising as £!49 then they HAVE to sell it at that.

I'd like some more info on where this flyer came from? some people say instore, some say papers... help?

I got a flyer free with The Suns TV Guide.

If you have the flyer it's probably best not to show it in the store until they produce the Tom Tom XL and then pull out your TRUMP CARD (or should that be FLYER:-) ).
#21

ask for one before you show the leaflet.
also dont they have a [email protected] thing on the currys site? that normally tells you when its out of stock

the website says theyre instock near me.
you could do that then when they get it out say you want it at the £149 price, as long as you have the leaflet that is.
#22
i went in and they said they dont have the one in stock cos the one being advertised is tom tom one xl gb and not tom tom one xl gb & ireland.
plus the item code on the brochure refers to the tom tom one gb.

have pretty clued up folk in there - leyton mills.
probably need to go to another one to find a less hoodwinked currys manager and staff.

when i was at school 30 years ago this was the case. could someone point to some legislation on this. the example we had at school would be if a 9 fell of a cars window so a car for £9999 would only be £999. whats to stop you putting a 10p sticker on anything in any shop and then saying you want it at that price, whether its a sweet bar or lcd tv?

No they don't. A leaflet, poster, price on the shelf, etc is an invitation to treat not an offer to sell at that price.

Under the Consumer Protection Act, it is a criminal offence to give consumers a misleading price indication, so if they refused to sell it at the lower price then they may have committed a criminal offence. However that would only happen if Trading Standards decided there was a case to answer.

As it is clearly a printing mistake (a picture of a TomTom 1 and the description from the XL) then provided that they now took reasonable steps to correct the error, such as having the correct price on the shelf, then there is not a cat in hells chance that Trading Standards will act. And even if Trading Standards did act then all that would happen is the store would be prosecuted, you would still not get one at the leaflet price.

So the manager might choose to sell you one at the leaflet price, but they do not have to sell you one at that price.

The small fact that you would committing theft if you did so.

Let us all howl in amazement when, in the run up to Christmas they sell the new stock at the market leading price of THIS price once all the stores have been e-maled about the X-mas reductions!

Centrally (in central warehouses-type) stock has never been a forte' of DSG and it seems like it never will be!

You can have something advertised on the website(s) for days on end at a reduced price (with NO availability at a VERY cheap price!)

Seems they're now doing the same for in-store/NPA!..(the Xmas geese ARE gtting fat!)

Don't be fooled be either of these (or their RMA/storefront policy!) Shop Around!! :santa:

You've been conned as far as I can tell. There are only two XL's on sale in the country. Europe and UK. Both feature complete map data for Ireland.

You would see people doing this before they introduced bar code scanning at the tills. There were a lot of thieves about.
#30
hi all, I used to work for the group and all I can say is that they dont usually honour things like this, but if it is in the press and on flyers they might.

When a deal in currys or pc world etc is processed on the tills, they use a special discount code so the actual discount, does not get taken off the bottom line. so they can actually do it for you if they want as it makes no difference to the store's virtual profit.

Best thing to to is tempt them, make the deal look good, so when they ask you for cover, buy it, but make sure they offer the price. Desperate salespeople these days wil usually knock a little extra off if you have the cover anyway, they are also targeted on attachments, cant think how much it is with sat nav, but it would help if you are buying something else as well.

Good luck with it, but keep pressing them, they can honour it if they want to.
#31
On Currys site it's £181.89 with reserve and collect available. :-)
#32
Hi,
Just bought three of these, no problem's at all.... the guys that I dealt with said they had to honour them due to the misprint-I expected a battle really I suggest anyone interested at least have a pop!....Good luck!
#33
Went this morning and asked for an XL GB and they checked that they had 5 in stock (around 11.15am this morning). Discussed the price, showed then the flyer I had brought with me (which they also had just inside the front door on the right) and they eventually, with not too much hassle, agreed to sell at £149.

What with a £25 PC World voucher I got for my birthday I ended up paying £124 ! Not bad.

When I left they still had the four left - so be quick.

Thanks to OP for this one. Great

which flyer is this?
the only flyer I have seen in store with tomtom on is the tomtom sat nav flyer. The £149 tomtom is clearly tom tom one, the description is very short and brief, how can you tell they are refering to tomtom one xl? the description on this flyer does not mention screen size etc.

Hi, after months of lurking (and buying stuff i don't need...but wanted :) ) I've decided to post!

I got the 'Mega Offers' leaflet at the store (Orpington) which does have on the front page a picture of the non-XL TomTom, and the non-XL code, but with a comment saying the Model: ONE XL GB for 149.

I tried to reason with the manager at the store (as others have) but he wasn't having any of it, saying he was under no obligation to sell it to me :( Oh well...maybe its just the store you get :(

Good luck to everyone else who tries!
#36
Just to let you know that they are advertising this at 149.99 on the t.v so I dont think its a mistake.
All currys will honour the deal.
#37
I found this which may clear up the should they/shouldn't they debate...

Points 5 and 9 explain what a retailer does and doesn't have to do

Alternatively they are quite cheap at £179.99 at Asda! :-D
