A very strong word of warning - if you need to use this in Central London or other places with hundreds of possible ways to get to a place and many roads and planning for a very long distance then the processor isn't fast enough to keep up - especially with IQ Route enabled.

I have this exact same model and this is the problem .. if you make a single mistake when driving and go off the route then the TomTom has to replan, trouble is it's so slow that by the time it's re-planned you've already moved somewhere else - so you can find yourself constantly re-planning.

I've had to pull over in the past to simply give the unit enough time to replan or just pray for a red traffic light.

No such problems however with TomTom for the iPhone - so much faster at replanning.

Was it the V2 or the IQ that you bought?

The V2 seems to be priced @ £99.99.

"Was £163". Lols. Yeah, maybe a year ago. This was £119.99 on Amazon's website until now.

Good deal for the product, certainly, but typical exaggerated "previous" price by a major online retailer, and it's a shameful practice which Amazon also do with their watches (Play.com are the worst for this though).

If you are going to use the tomtom outlet store here are two bits of advice:
1. Register on the site first, you will get an email with a 10 off voucher that you can use on a purchase.
2. Go through Quidco there is 8% off.

Havent heard of garmin tomtom is a better brand.

Garmin have been around for a while and make solid GPS's generally (e.g. for boating and hiking). Tom Tom make great Car GPS's though!!

Just dont make mistakes! You cant blame the satnav for your incomptence!

i bought the IQ version. I was hesitant at first but I was really glad i bought from there - there was no scratches at all on the unit and it came fully boxed (i think the box does have the words refurb or outlet on it but it's a full retail box - not a plain box).
I needed it for our Spain trip back in may - it worked flawlessly and i'm glad i had it for Spain - it's a nightmare driving there!

The unit should still be powerful enough to process directions though, that is the whole point of what deeinlondon was saying!

I have Tomtom on a widescreen Navigo which cost me £69.99 2 years ago, updated the maps a couple of weeks ago. It plays mp3's, photos and movies too. Much better value. Oh and it processes nice and quickly too.

What's the point in having a satnav if it can't deal with you missing a turn especially if it is somewhere you don't know? Think deeinlondon provides useful information for someone considering buying this.

Thanks guys for the support ....yes my comments were to help people .. Comments like Red Ranger's are the kind that stop people even bothering to share potentially useful information... people go off route for many reasons, mistakes, closed roads, traffic, road works, and detours, etc - Such comments like Red Ranger's are pretty pathetic to say the least ... But anyway let's not let the few rude people like Red Ranger stop us from sharing useful product information that only an existing user would know about.

I got my TomTom XL IQ Routes as an ex-display model for £60 and have bought a total of 7 TomTom's for myself, friends and family so I know my SatNav units better then most.

According to Wikipedia this model only has a 266 Mhz processor whilst most of the GO units have a 400 MHz processor.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TomTom

So I'd suggest if people navigate through complex roads they go for a model with a faster processor.

Also the unit only seems to have a USB 1 interface so transferring huge maps, or making backup, etc takes a very long time.

Good price, have some heat.

Just like to second Dee's comments, this unit's genuinely a bit sluggish. I won't vote either way, since I feel there are better ones on the market for a similar price, but this is cheap for the unit - I just can't recommend it.

I think the problem is TomTom keep adding new features to the software like the IQ Routes BUT they're just not bothering to update the hardware to keep up with it or doing any real work on optimising the computational speed of the code.

The only real things that help are to turn off IQ Routes in central London and / or instead of planning a route that takes you all the way to your destination, to plan a route that takes you part way, so there's less data for the unit to compute all the various ways whilst on the move.

In theory using itinerary planning should break up a single big journey into smaller waypoints and thus reduce the loads on the system.

You can do this with Google Maps using this tool
http://www.houghi.org/tomtom/

BTW if you want to do something cool with your TomTom you can also install this side by side with the existing TomTom Software

Mr Hunter
Whats the best way to stick US maps on this, as cannot see a SD card anywhere

It has 2GB of Internal Memory - but with USB 1 only it will take ages to install the USA Maps.

There's also no Bluetooth on it so no option to connect it to a mobile phone for things like Live Traffic Updates (except via RDS-TMC Cable)
