I wouldn't touch it wi' yours pal
Absolute crap bought two and snapped one on first use and bent the other one
can you find a toque wrench for same price ? :)_
LandOfConfusion
450mm is a bit short. And Am-Tech... not exactly well known for their quality tools.
Still I'm not voting either way, I guess it takes up less space than a cross wrench and it's probably better then the gimmick that sometimes comes with the spare wheel.

i thought it be short but feels ok to use good leverage, actually surprised with the quality, has good reviews.
Thanks .

These are good. But I've seen £6000+ of bikes on these. And I've also seen how bad insurance company's pay out. I have a van all the way!
Note that the caption to the photo above is "bit wobbly or what?", with another photos caption reading "dare you carry your bike on this?"
You can be too cheap with these things. A guy at work had a cheap bike rack and the hooks gave way on the motorway launching his and his kid's bikes into the carriageway. He managed to retrieve them, would have been a different story if the motorway was busy at the time.
Ordered!! Well spotted.....seems to have really good reviews...
Has to be worth a punt.
Cheers

Never let them touch my wheels nuts (ouch) with impact driver if they do they should use a torque wrench to tighten! my tip is grease your nuts (um nice) this helps when re-torqueing less friction and all that X)

I've never seen a tyre fitting place that doesn't use an impact wrench, these are always set higher than the correct torque, using a torque wrench after would render a false reading'
After visiting the tyre shop slacken off the wheel nuts with the breaker bar and retighten with a torque wrench, now make sure that you can undo the nuts with the wheel brace, if you can't then keep the breaker bar in the car.

this would be good for undoing wheel nuts where they do them up to tight with a impact driver
Handy for beating burglars

Hi all, would you guys mind if I picked your brains on using one of these? I'm about to buy some of these helping hand dewbries and and some silverline solder, do I need something to clean the end of this and a stand to hold this device?

I have had their hot air torch for some years (same design) and found that it splutters. Tried every type of gas on the market and never solved it.

They are nice tools, but because they splutter
Yes, they're all the same even the expensive ones.
I have one but i dont use it at all now. Sometimes for lighting cigarets but thats it. Get yourself a decent wire soldering gun and you will be happy. Lidl or aldi will do ;)
oh no..price gone up to 13.99
I have had their hot air torch for some years (same design) and found that it splutters. Draper sent me some replacements and they were the same.. I tried every type of gas on the market and never solved it, but since I got the extras for free, I am not complaining.

They are nice tools, but because they splutter, they are hard to regulate the heat.I am still tempted by this as this would make a really convenient soldering iron...

Jon

Update.. Price no longer 11.68.

I can vouch for the Sealey breaker bar mentioned before. Takes alot of abuse before it will break. I have only broken one bar knuckle so far and that was on a van's 24mm wheel nuts with a metal pole slid over the breaker bar handle for more leverage when i really should have been using a 1 inch socket set not 1/2".

I got this set a while back purely to get the 16mm and 18mm spanners that are not included in most sets.
I specificaly needed those sizes and to buy just those 2 spanners alone would cost more each than this whole set.

Not snapon quality granted, but sturdy enough for most jobs and certainly worth a fiver.
What do people expect? If you're repairing a car, invest in expensive tools. If you're repairing a bicycle, buy these. Though to be honest I think some people are complete snobs, why sit on HUKD and then complain about a deal... Expensive doesn't always equal great unless it's German
they do some cheap stuff and some exact same stuff except better quality but at higher price =p
Silverline tools are the worst tools ive ever bought
go to your local £ shop (not the chain type)

ask them if they can get silverline products
if they say yes, ask to see what they can get, and they will show u the silverline catalogue
order what u want, they can usually get it in next day
i bought a heatgun this way, (similar price as other places but better quality)

Its funny as ,as a general rule, the bolt usually goes before the spanner? You guys must have drop forged everything.
I have a set and they're fine, the full range of sizes, not 8-14mm, not 12-19mm, its a full set, so when your looking for your snap-on 8 mil, and cant find it, this is always a back up. And as for using them to unbolt torqued bolts, I wouldn't used a snap on or anything else ,I'd use a t-bar then get the spanner on it.
Its a fiver after all, so gold plated it aint.........

Company slogan should be "Silverline.....say goodbye to the skin on your knuckles." Okay for occasional light use if your careful but no more.

Have you ever bust a spanner through hand strength alone? I never have and my fist is about 14"
It's quite common for the casting to go at the jaw. There's quite a bit of load going through a relatively small section of steel there. I've seen it happen a few times.

It's probably worth mentioning that Silverline do have a lifetime guarantee. I can only assume that's because most people can't be bothered to claim against it. I've had a few of their tools, mostly inadvertently, and none of them have been worth bothering with.
These are junk. Bought them, tried them, tossed them in the bin.

cheap but pretty poorly balanced

Glad I am not the only one who appreciates a good balance on an axe, for that reason I would never buy unseen, probably look odd when choosing one as I tend to stand there judging balance do light swings seeing how it feels in my hand, the one I have now was only cheap (reduced) but feels like an extension of my arm.

how the hell do people break spanners without doing something barbaric to them ? ive got no name spanners thro to britool and apart from wear i can count on one hand the amount that have broken in 40 years and i use them every day in my job-if you want the best buy them but i've found even the cheaper ones do the job

Because I obviously apply too much torque to them which opens up the jaws.
I do have 2 of these bent into weird shapes to suit a very specific purpose, I'd never do that to one of the snap on ones.

I can see why people assemble this incorrectly. The instruction sheet is quite sparse, yet still manages to contain at least four mistakes, and the illustrations on the box are inconsistent too. Assembled as the instructions and big box picture show, it folds the wrong way, fouling the cranks, so doesn't fold up completely. The picture in the first comment above has it this way too. The smaller pictures on the box have it right, especially the one of it folded (cranks stick out the top). They also tell you to use the wrong nuts in the wrong places, but there are too few of one and too many of the other if you try to do it that way, so you ought to be able to figure that out, and they supply four "extra" washers, which I have used where the instructions don't say to put a washer.

The Maplin one illustrated above will also fold the wrong way, cranks downward.

Edited By: LongPockets on Oct 08, 2012 13:28
the legs are splayed inwards, not outwards

Ah, explains why it looks less robust.

Edited By: LongPockets on Oct 05, 2012 17:55
Trust me, these cheap benches are all the same, apart from the colour & branding, and of course the price. They are lightweight, but surprisingly useful and robust, although how robust depends on how well you assemble them, and if you look carefully, you'll see that the Maplins bench in the picture has been assembled incorrectly, as the side sections are the wrong way around so the legs are splayed inwards, not outwards. ...numpties! perhaps they should stick to electronics!
This is the Maplin one, £9.99 on Amazon but with delivery comes to a penny more than the silverline, and it looks a bit more spindly to me.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61gcKu9HL1L._AA1024_.jpg
Not bad if you need it delivered, but they have these in Maplin for £9.99 instore.
May not have them now, but I got one from Wilkinsons for about £8-£9, and they even had them in Asda for a fiver, don't know if they still do.

These are actually very well made for the money
I'm not sure that means much when they are only 42p a spanner ... and postage and packing needs to come out of that too!

I think you're being deliberately obtuse.

Any you haters that loath them so much want to clear some space in your shed and send me theirs? I'd very much like 2 of these as currently I saw things balanced on a tool box and the other end on my weight bench - This has to be better.

Think of it as not just eco recycling (you go to heaven) but a true testiment to how useless you believe they are. Of course, if your not willing to give them up, perhaps some of the poor reviews are little more than over exaggerations.

Expired.
I have one for £10 from Clas Ohlsen. Nowhere near as good as my dad's 20year old plus B&D workbench but still more than good enough for the variety of things I've cut, nailed, drilled & painted using it.

It was either pay a tenner for a cheap workbench or use a couple of crates, no brainer.

Let's face it, most people use these maybe 20 hours in total every year, so you dont need it to be top of the range.

Ok, I've just watched the video, this one is much, much worse than the Clas Ohlsen one I got.

Spend the extra couple of quid on that one, this is tat.
