My son has one and it works great. You only need to put it in for about 2 seconds, maybe people are keeping it in too long?

It also depends on the pencils you are sharpening, my son uses staedtler pencils.

If guys have the energy to "knock one out" surely hes got the energy to turn a pencil a few turns to sharpen it. I myself use a mechanical pencil... more energy left over at the end of the day :)
