good spec, not very pleasing on the eye though is it?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder :P

I personally think it looks better then the Sony Head Unit Deal currently on here for similar price.

Yeah, looks a bit chav-tastic but great spec. Hot

Voted hot. Very nice - I would have gone for it, but my current unit is working fine, dagnabbit!

What's a "motorised face"?:?:
#7
WMA playback? Ergh. Why not use something useful like AAC or OGG with MP3, so iPod/iTunes and Linux users can use it? Who uses WMA nowadays?
#8
looks like cheap muck with a panasonic badge on it...? panasonic is a quality brand so its confusing me
#9
but what car stereo uses OGGs? , I think its time car stereo manufacturers ditched moving part technology (ie no cds or dvds, or tapes) and used high capacity flash memory cards, solidstate memory or usb devices. Combined with a DAB radio receiver that would be a great car stereo .Therefore they could make the head units much smaller and get rid of that stupid letterbox slot we all have in our dashboards :)

Means that by the touch of a button, the face plate (the front screen) will slowly slide down and out (motorised) to reveal the CD slot. Same going up after you insert CD. Looks slick :)

It looks like you would need a CY-BT100N for about £130 to make this headunit truly bluetooth enabled, so the sony headunit is a better choice IMHO :?

I know what you mean. I don't know if I'm just getting old, but I'd rather have something with a few more buttons on it! This looks like it could be a bit fiddly to get it to do what you want whilst driving. My recent Sony one (CDX-GT616U) appears to have a much better layout imho. Not that this is the most important thing by any means, and I know that you'd soon get used to it. I'm sure it's a good deal, and a decent Head Unit - just not for me!

Don't forget to check what if any extras you may need to buy. I put my sony into an 02 plate Mondeo so needed to buy an adapter cable (Ford isn't iso) and a nice neat fascia so it looks nice as the old Ford stereo was a rather sizable brick! Worth checking though as it could add another £20-£30 to the overall cost.

Does this support multi-stalk adapters? I have a multi-stalk in my 206 and I want this to be able to use it. I bought the cheapo Goodmans head unit last week, but its pretty useless so i've put that on Ebay...

To play my 8 tracks...................

If you know what they are then you will understand my grip has loosened on technology.... some would argue reality :w00t:

Shame it hasn't got SD port or DAB!

I would note the above comment very carefully if you are thinking of buying this for Bluetooth and Ipod. This unit is only "compatible" for these functions and add ons would be required (at extra cost). Hence the Sony unit could be a clear winner in terms of price.

Has anyone ever rigged one of the these (or any other car stereo) up to the mains - what transformer would I need?

Sounds like a strange question I know, but I have installed waterproof speakers in my shower, and at the moment, they are connected to a standard stereo system in the cupboard outside. Thought about maybe installing one of these, cutting a hole in the tiles just outside the shower, and hey presto!
#23
Does anyone know if this supports multi-stalks or not? I need to know before buying this. Thanks
#24
I like the way it says "Color Display" on it just to make sure you always know and avoid confusion.

Im lookin for a head unit with a USB slot (must-have) for £120 at the most. I can get a Sony one down my local motor world for £100 but any better spec ones for cheaper?

This one i can get for 100 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-CDXGT610U-EUR-In-car-head-unit/dp/B000M053Z0

Couldn't agree more! Solid-state and DAB all the way. I"d buy one of those.

Had to get the OGG comment in there too - being PC (politically correct) to all the Linux users out there ;-)

Not exactly panasonics "top spec" but is a good price for what it is...

craigp - Alpine do a unit that has no moving parts, cant remember the exact unit though, there are also units that actually control an ipod (i.e. you dont have to touch the ipod, you work the ipod from the stereo).

There are also quite a few now that have a USB in the front for a memory stick to fit in and will play from that.

DAB isn't in cars very much, because most of the stuff is made in the far east, and they have not that long ago got FM, so as its not a big market for them, they are not really focusing on it.

Yes no problem, buy a 12v bench power supply from Maplins.

I managed to pick up a Sony CDX-GT616U just after Christmas for about £65 from Argos. They'd all gone by the time I got chance to post a deal unfortunately. It's essentially the same as the one you're looking at and it is a VERY good unit, much better than the Ford one it replaced. The only slight problem I have is the positioning of the head unit in my Mondeo, The usb stick is ever so slightly in the way when I change into 5th gear. At some point I'll get 'round to buying a shorter stick and that'll solve it!

Just looked at the one you linked to and it's gone down in price to £87.09. At that price I'd snap it up if I were you, just remember to budget for any extras (fascia, adapter cable) if your car needs them.

So do Blaupunkt, couldn't comment on the quality, but at about £70 it's probably cheaper than the Alpine if somebody really doesn't want a cd on a budget. Still no DAB though, I suspect any of the bigger companies will now wait for the newer DAB standard, if they're going to implement it at all.

If you have a relatively modern car with a bigger than average factory fit head unit then when you take it out it'll leave behind a hole that's bigger than the stereo you want to put in, you then need to buy a fascia plate (bit of plastic to go around to make it look nice and in some places hold the thing in place.

Adapter cables may be required if your old factory fit stereo is not iso standard. My Mondeo uses a different wiring connector, so I had to buy a wiring adapter so that I could connect up the new one.

I picked up the fascia and adapter on ebay for less than £20

Try here to see what I mean, although like I say ebay is probably cheaper!

True, it also looks good, as long as your absolutely sure that you wouldn't want more than 1GB of storage for you music, as it doesn't have a usb socket on it, so you can only play back what's stored on the front panel.
