Possible £17 cashback from Quidco for new customers and £10 for existing customers upgrading. Edit: If you get the £17 cashback then you're effectively getting 12 months for the price of 7. Not bad me…

What equipment do you need to make use of this?

If your tv has a slot for a cam then that's all you need, looks like a credit card slot but a bit bigger

That CAM thing looks like it will be easy to hack. Has anyone done it?
Looks like I'll be cancelling after 2 months:

If you’ve subscribed to ESPN on freeview through BT Vision or Top Up TV, you can currently watch the channel during these hours only:

2:00pm – 04:00am from Monday to Friday
11:00am – 06:00am on Saturdays
11:00am – 04:00am on Sundays

While you can watch the full uninterrupted ESPN, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, on the other Digital TV providers currently carrying the channel, ESPN does its very best to provide the best experience for all sport fans and is currently working on delivering a 24hour service for all of its viewers.
To receive the latest updates in your mailbox please go to: Keep up to date.

Luckily the latest Copa America matches don't start half an hour later, or they'd cut them off with 15 minutes to go.

I heard that with the NFL games they cut the matches off at 4am. It's all right though because they show the full match the following day at 9am. The only bad thing about that is that ESPN doesn't start broadcasting at 9am on Top Up TV.
sorted - why not
Just ordered. Cheers!

The deal is only useful for those who do not yet have a CAM or a card. i.e. if you have a digital TV or PVR with a CAM slot and want ESPN.

I just called the sales number on the website and asked what deals they had on ESPN for a new customer with a HUMAX 9300T PVR. They said they currently have a promotion where you just pay £9.99 and get the CAM, the connection fee, the card and 2 months ESPN for £9.99. After the two months I can cancel or continue paying each month £9.99 if I want to keep it. Sounds perfect if you just want to see the Copa America like me!

I think it's a good deal because the CAM itself is £19.99 and the connection fee is normally £20 and the monthly ESPN is normall £9.99. So I'm paying £9.99 instead of £50!

2 points that may or may not change your opinion of this deal.

1. If you wait a few months 118 bet may do the same deal that they ran at least twice last football season. http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/bet-50-and-get-a-freeview-250gb-dig/796579...You bet £50 and get a free freeview box with 3 months ESPN. You have to options. Bet £50 on Man U vs one of the newly promoted teams at Old Trafford or do a bit of matched betting (see Gambling Intro forums at moneysavingexpert.com or google it) so the deals is effectively free.

2. For the Copa America, I just got an email from William Hill stating the following:

"Some of the world's leading footballers will be on show this weekend, as it sees the start of the Copa America. Whoever you've backed, don't watch highlights - tune in to William Hill TV for live coverage of EVERY match, direct to your PC"

Not sure what the quality will be like but ESPN on freeview is pretty poor so this may be almost as good.

It may make sense to do option 2 and then hope that option 1 becomes an option during the season...

recieved yesterday, seems to work ok,but its early days yet
These boxes arnt the best, they do do updates to them but the features they add usually cause other problems with the box. I think most freeview recorders arnt perfect or as work as well as they should. Just thought i should mention it.
I used to subscribe to TUTV, but the box I had (Thom DTI6300) frequently locked up in standy, resulting in days of programming missed, and the programmes themselves were mainly repeats or USA imports. Don't get me started on the number of recordings it also missed.

These points are academic if people go for the 500GB box, but I have noticed the DTI6300 is still available on the TUTV website, so beware.

I cancelled my TUTV subscriptionseveral months ago - the final straw was the crap picture quality. Quite often, programmes would be presented in the wrong aspect ratio, and/or the picture would be poor quality, suffering from very noticeable compression artifacts (although this did vary across programmes) but I felt that the overall the picture quality of the TUTV content was noticeably inferior to normal freeview channels.

.
I'm curious, the Sky+ boxes are Thomson aren't they??? Similar issues to the Freeview units???

I think just some of them are Thomsons, there are Samsung (the one I have), Amstrad, Pace etc but there are still issues with the Thomson ones e.g. http://www.epicycle.org.uk/technical/skyplus160.htmhttp://www.digitalspy.co.uk/digitaltv/a22199/thomson-sky-160.html etc
meggie_dude;8087560
Yeah, sorry. Don' know where I got the founder info from.
Anyway, you're an avid poster there, and obviously very pro topuptv. Fine, no problem, your choice.
I see this 'deal' as a way of drumming up more topuptv support. Just my opinion.

The deal has been mentioned on Digital Spy since the 8th March....no-one had posted it here, so I thought I might as well post it

I know people have differing opinions of things.....some people think Sky is the Bees Knees, I personally think it's too expensive just for TV. This is an alternative for those that don't want to spend as much on TV, and don't want as much choice as Sky offers....also for those that may only have Freeview, and perhaps want to get abit more choice.

Nothing to do with drumming up support.....just sharing a deal like everyone else does on this site, and like I have before.

I just purchased one of these off ebay for about half the price here and now I stumble across these comments!

..can only hope it's better than worse!
Without doubt THE WORST PVR I HAVE EVER OWNED.

Even the latest software does not address the serious issues this box has. Good luck with it, but I suspect you'll be taking it back in a short space of time.
nihcaj;4630111
It is WORSE than useless. Useless just would not work at all- this fools you into thinking it is working, (by whining and making quite a din!) then it lets you down!

I would perhaps go as far as say it is the number one dud electronic item I have ever experienced

yeah you are probably right so i cancelled my order. maybe it's because my parents seldom used their recorders that's why they have no complaints about it!

anyways, the cancellation e-mail is sent.
anh_duong;4629878
it's not that bad. i bought one for my parents and as techno illeterate as they are they seem to be pretty happy with it. the reviews aren't great but they never had any problems with it.

edit: after reading all the reviews i think i might cancel my order!!!! although my parents never had a problem it seems that i probably better off just using my mediacenter pc.

Can you not get a top up tv box elsewhere for less than £89?

Good deal for those that like the company/channel, I don't think many people do though do they?
ravenheart;2930076
If someone posted a Blu-Ray disc at £5 would you all complain because you've also got to buy a Blu-Ray player at £200? So the total cost of that Blu-Ray would be £205. No, because that would be stupid.

The Setanta Sports is free, just as posted. That we don't all have the piece of kit required isn't the poster's fault. Although, the original post really should have said "for TopUpTV Customers". Maybe that would have stopped people whinging?

You still have to pay £20 so not free

Thought this was a good offer and would be able to use an existing topup TV card.
Wrong... You do have to buy a PVR at at least £89 then pay the £20 fee.
Still not bad that bad as a years setanta will cost you £120
But still not for me this time:thinking:
Setanta 1 is quirky and blocky through topup and doesnt show all the footy .
You will also not be able to get setanta 2 which is standard with the sky/setanta package and doesnt suffer the low quality for the same price, more i think on it not even worth considering unless for some reason you cant get sky.

DO NOT TOUCH SETANTA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just tried to subscribe despite reading all the nightmare stories and a previous bad experiance personally with them. I tried only because it is the only way to get Arsenal TV.

After getting though and asking to subscribe my details where taken down only to then be told they are having problems with the signal in my area and I need to phone CS.

Sounded like cobblers to me and the operator didn't even know what he was doing or how to connect me.

I said forget it and taken the CS number incase I changed my mind.

I tired Customer services despite knowing I was paying 10p/min for the priveledge of having to be on hold for ages to give them my custom. I finally get through and explain everything. The CS sounded like he was lost and didn't know what he was doing. He mumble something (probably offensive) and blatantly hung up on me!!!!!!!

Now did I have a lucky escape from Setanta by their incompetance in not knowing how to subsribe/connect me?

Who are these guys employee...... they are losing business due to their staff not knowing how to do anything and being damn right rude. Their base of operations but be a holiday camp for the local teenagers or something. A place to go where you have a laugh, pick up the phone now and then and hang up. then go home with a pay packet?!?!?!? Sounds that way!

WHY ARE COMPANIES CONNECTING THEMSELVES TO SETANTA like Arsenal TV. The bad reputation is something Setanta are bringing about and If I was Arsenal Tv I wouldnt want it rubbing off onto my business!

:x

Totally agree. Big article on MSE today about them saying theire cancellation terms are a joke.

60 DAYS NOTICE REQUIRED IN WRITING! :w00t:

and they lose the letters!
What do people think about the Sagem 7280 on offer for £89.99 in argos - I know its a very basic box but it has topuptv and is it more reliable than the thomson which gets horrible reviews???

A couple of features they forgot to mention:

Randomly freezes and has to be turned of at the plug socket to reset!

Randomly rewinds to start of programme when fast forwarding through adverts leaving you to fast forward through nearly an hour of the programme again to get to the point where you left off!

Randomly removes invalid recordings, why are they invalid?

Randomly Freezes when changing through the channels leaving you to reset at plug again!

Despite all this, I love this box for it's price and great features and desperately wait for Top Up TV to issue a bug fix update for it to sort out these issues.

Be aware that the customer service of the helpline is rubbish.

I wrote and posted the same question, but the board ate it and i could be bothered posting it again.

Sky was on £150 quidco not long ago, with sky+ box £99 and install cost of £30 (I think?) it was a steal. Shame quidco is now gone!
Surely this begs the question... if you're gonna go into a contract, why not go with a company that are gonna give you a decent box and some decent channels?

Sky's lowest TV package is only £7 a month more.

How is this 'top-up tv' if you're tied in?

Not voting either way yet, would love a clearer explanation!
i think you can pick these up pretty cheap anyway

I don't know... If you wanted to have TopUpTv and were prepared to sign up for a year then the recorder box (presumably the Thomson) is only costing you 20.00 - that sounds quite good value to me.

but they are nearly new (read refurb if you are lucky) therefore customer returns.

seems an underhand way of getting rid of all their scrap with probably very little comeback as they are marketed as free!. The Thomson box was branded as a TopUpTV box.

actually you can buy direct from TUTV's new ebay store....

http://************.co.uk/TopUpTV

Avoid this product.....

Check our the forums, the TopUpTV boxes are useless, the software updates are done by TopUpTV themselves not by Thompson, and they don't know what they are doing. There are buggs in the software that have been known about for months but no fixes have been made available to users.

The manufacturing also is far from good, cheap components make it very noisy, and any interuption in the power supply, e.g. switching you TV or even a light on or off and any recording currently running can fail.

Do you have one of these boxes? Obviously not as you're taking nonsense...the boxes are very stable with current release and are actively supported. They aren't the quietest admittedly but i'd be surprised if the noise would be heard in an average living room. If you want a PVR for a bedroom get an old pace twin - passively cooled with laptop drive to virtually silent....

As for the power supply problem that's one i've never heard off or encountered and mine is plugged in with lots of noisy things (fish pump, florescent lights, CRT tv etc etc)
isnt the fan on all the time so useless for bedrooms?

Why pay for freeview? The pay channels are **** anyway and are only broadcast in certain hours. I personally think top-up tv is a disgrace and should not be allowed to be a financial success. We need proper free channels like dave, not shopping channels or pay channels.

Dave is on Freeview and only 3 shopping channels, I think you need to recheck your info.
I could've swore that I read a few months back that Top Up TV was closing down or something :?
I think it only works with the Thomson DTR DT6300/16 as there is a drop down box for you to choose your make/model and this is the only one listed.
