Would you be kind enough to explain? You know of a better deal?

Voted cold because ..........................................................................................?

I have no problem with folks voting cold but I feel the forum would be a better place if we were informed of the reason. Just my five pence worth.

opps, I was a minute late with my post. Gingerboy wrote it for me.

Well, the Toshiba web site gives only one year warranty too, so who is dishing out all the free extended warranties? Why is it a poor deal? Where are the 17" laptops with this spec for less, I must be missing them when I search?

Pointless post if there is no substance to it :-(

The whole concept of buying a 17" laptop as a desktop replacement (which is the only use for one I can think of, they are too heavy for anything else!) is something I have tried and it failed miserably - buy a desktop, and get cheaper more powerful computing, it is quieter and more flexible, even if a little bigger!

ok, i know its a little bit more money, but you can go and collect it now.

HP, larger hdd, more ram, a processor which is twice as good.

CPU in the above Tosh laptop is way too slow for serious use, your link is a much better deal as is this:

toshiba are just too unreliable, im not voting tho....its probs gd for a budget pc but too my my uni m8s had a toshiba and they both broke within a year....make sure it has the 1yr warranty tho cos my m8s got a free upgrade at teh cost of there data when theirs went

Just to advise, this is 17" so not the most portable thing ever!

and the processor is not too promising, well its pentium dual core, about 1/2 yrs old... and within the computer industry... Thats OLD!!!

Vista as we know requires a lot of power, the Core 2 duo's can barely keep up with it, I'd hate to see it with one of these!

I know this machine is not up to much, and it certainly won't fly whatever it is running, but I think you have got a hardware problem, if that's what you find with Vista! Either that, or you need to spend a bit of time reconfiguring it and deleting some of the junk that programs have added to it loading up and also stopping some of the services running in the background then! If it still is that slow, and it has plenty ram, then just turn off some of the pretty bits and run it in a less fancy state!

Runs fine on any number of machines, including an old AMD single core machine I have lying around, and my now bust old core2duo laptop, only the screen is clapped out as it is an Acer!

Voted cold! Toshibas are tosh on build quality. We spent a fortune on repairing ours but it just went wrong again.

There are, as others have shown via links, better machines for the money.

Voted cold.

I recently bought a HP G70-111EM for very little money more than this deal - and its better spec than the Toshiba

I have this processor in my Advent and its poor to say the least.

Yup, mine works fine, I'm on the T7200 but the older versions I've worked with like T5500 aren't bad (wouldn't say they were actually quick, you'd notice some lag here n there), but a pentium dual core is just not efficient enough, I wouldnt really go for it, the sony that was here earlier is actually a much better deal...

Vista isn't actually /that/ processor hungry. I've run it fine on slower single core Celerons. The critical thing is to have at least 2GB of RAM. if you don't believe me, leave task manager running for a couple of hours with the refresh speed turned down, and see how little time the CPU spends flat out.

This isn't bad value, but it's at the point in the price range where another £50 gets you a perceptibly better machine.
#24
I'm running Vista just fine on an even older T2400 with 2GB RAM. RAM is what bogs vista down along with the ***** that the OEMs install, this machine has plenty CPU for Vista IMO.

Really - perhaps instead of making sweeping statements like that you could add a link for something better then as I suspect you're wrong?

You're so absolutely correct. Dual core CPU is fine - and 2Gb memory is also adequate.
