seems like a good deal - hot!
#3
very hot, works out cheaper rather than buying an internal drive and a caddy, nice find!

External Hard Drives haven't really come down that much in price over the last few months - or have they? I can remember hotukdeals not being priced that much different to this last year for a 500GB - is it my memory or are these better quality? :whistling:

I've had the 250GB version of this for a couple of years now, only problem so far is the little light at the front stopped working.

Other than that it's been a great drive, nice and quiet too.
#6
I had the 320GB version and the caddy/case failed. Now running the HD in a USB 2.0 caddy. Unreliable, voted cold.
#7
what drive is inside?

I'd guess it's a Tosh, as far as I know they still make their own drives.

Would it be sarcastic to suggest it could be a Toshiba 500GB Hard Drive WITH 8MB Cache :p

Techno World has £12.99 delivery charge - so more expensive.

PATA is pretty much dead.

Needs to be plugged into the mains.

I paid a similar price for a 500GB Lacie drive from Amazon 6 months ago. This is more of less the standard price. This is luke warm at best.

When connected and viewed in Device Manager, it shows the drive is actually made by Western Digital Corporation, maybe they are owned by Toshiba.

I have one of these - anyone found a way to get it to spin down? Mine stays spinning constantly - even if I turn off the machine and forget to turn off the drive

Your best bet, mate, will be give Tosh a quick call as they will walk you through that bit ? I think you can reach them no 0870 066 0191

The drive will still be under warranty as long as you purchased it three years back ?

I've had this drive for a little over a year now, and it just stopped working about 6 months ago. There's power to it, as the LED lights up, and I can hear the drive attempting to spin up, but the damn thing never fully achieves it. I've read somewhere online that the chasis is prone to failure, but the HDD tends to be okay.

I need to find out how to get into the blasted thing to take the HDD out, can anybody help?

Hi,

Try one of those repair it yourself websites, they are actually pretty cool. I have tried to put a link as well but for some reason moderators are not publishing that ..... dig !

Hi,

From what I can remember these are fitted with Western Digital hard disk drives. Toshiba don't make 3.5" hard disk drives - again to the best of my knowledge.

Hope this is of some help.

I had the 320GB version and the caddy/case failed.

Me too, and if you do a websearch you'll find it's quite a common problem with the 320gb version - I dunno if they have improved the enclosure any since then.

The cover on the back panel is just glued on - pull it off and you'll find four (iirc) screws. unscrew them and the drive will just slide out. a couple of screws either side and remove the ide/power cables and the drive is free.

Put drive in pc/another enclosure and jobs a good'un.

It's actually a Western Digitial drive inside it (or at least mine was). My drive is still going, although it has some bad sectors.

Whilst we are on it, Toshiba had also released a 160 GB internal version? I think product code of PX1270E-1G16 can anyone tell me if I can find it below 55 quids deliered ?

cheers
