Does this come with office
#2
I doubt it, you rarely get free software suites these days. Especially office which is £100 on it's own.
#3
it doesn't come with office

it also doesn't have a dvd r/w drive but an external one is only £20

It does have a DVD R/W drive. I have one of these laptops. (Also, it says it in the description.)
#7
Have a look at Open Office, basically a free 'Office' utility...
#8
It's quite common for NEW Windows 8.1 devices to come with Office365 12 month free subscription. Even the £80 Staples Linx 10 inch windows tablet did.
This deal means that it costs £60 after the first 12 months to keep it for another year.

Or £109 for a lifetime license.

This being refurb probably not on that deal.

I also have this (bought from Argos eBay outlet last year). Arrived in pretty much mint condition. Not the nicest looking laptop but does what I need (ie everything except gaming, which I'm not into anyway).

Similar in spec to this 1 at the same price, although the 1 you have listed has a faster clock speed and the other is a 4th gen gets heat from me

3K on Passmark, so not bad at all. :)

Put in an SSD, install Classic Shell, and this would be a pretty nice laptop.

£109 for a lifetime license - that's interesting as I have not seen it anywhere?

If you don't know, I'm not sure how any of us would know, unless one of us knows you personally. If anyone out there knows this person, did they buy this laptop on December 16th last year? I'm sure they'd be grateful to know.

Yes, that's logical. Office365 is just a subscription version of office 2013, and this is limited in that it excludes access, outlook and publisher.

Both of them are capable to do that. The L50 has a one newer gen CPU, +1 USB3 and -1 USB2.
It is more up to your budget. I personally would prefer the L50 as it is not refurb.

The C50 refurb's processor is a previous generation, but is signifaicantly more powerful than the L50's. The L50 has a lower powered processor so has a better battery life.

Thank you both for your reply. Are they much of a muchness then? Or will I notice the L50 as being significantly slower? When browsing, I tend to have up to 20 pages opened at once. Will this, or any other factor be affected by the slower. FYI, I tend to use the laptop plugged in, so battery power isn't a factor really.

If costs of both machines were the same, which would you choose?

PS - Hope you don't mind answering the questions, I'm totally mind boggled by it all! ;) x

With 20 pages -depending on the websites-, the memory would more of a limiting factor the CPU (btw, Supartramp is right, the prev gen cpu is faster about 20% based on passmark... I still don't think that the difference would be noticeable in your case.).
L50 deal seems expired anyway. Go for this and add 4gb RAM more.

I've never used a 'U' processor, but the general consensus on places like UKHD and MSE is that they're slow, it's a trade-off against portability. Don't quote me, but I think I saw a battery time of 6 hours for a 'U' processor, against about 4 hours for the i3 3110M.

My current laptop is a Samsung with the i3 3110M and I have no plans/need to replace it.

The refurb arrived this morning, however it was the wrong model!!!! Not too happy about it, but it's already on it's way back and I've ordered another i3 3110M. However, cosmetically it was near perfect with just a couple of marks on the lid which were really only noticeable in a particular light.

I ordered the C50 and it arrived today. Hugely disappointed though - no manual, part of the cable missing and food particles in between the keys, especially around the touchpad area. I've contacted the seller to request a refund and also for them to pay for the return postage, given that the condition of the item is not as described. Totally gutted, and not sure whether I should get another one from them? Thoughts anyone? x

Well the 2nd/replacement refurb arrived today, it's the correct model this time, and cosmetically there isn't a mark on it.

My first move was to get rid of the Windows 8 look and initially had a bit of hassle via IE and 'filehippo', where I nearly got landed with a virus, thanks 'filehippo'. However, my 2nd effort involved deleting some programmes via control panel, in particular Macafee, downloaded AVG, Firefox, installed Office.............and we're cooking with gas!

When I got the first refurb, the wrong model, I phoned Henry, told them the problem, they gave me a phone number for Argos Outlet where I spoke to a very nice lady. She promptly e-mailed me return paperwork, including a postage paid label for the front/outside of the package, and took it down to the PO where I got a receipt for it.

From previous experience of returning something to Argos Outlet, and also PCW/Currys outlet, there was no problem/hassle, and the refund was issued asap on them receiving the item back.

I'm pleased for you Supatramp, glad it all worked out for you.

Thanks again for all your help - sadly I'm now going to have to rethink as it's now OOS. I did however follow your advice and phone the Argos eBay outlet number and they're sending me a returns label.

It's still there, "more than 10 available", but it's now at £249.99! However, if it was me, I'd phone them, tell them your situation, you can presumably quote them the original item/order number as proof, and see if they'll honour the previous lower price. There's no harm in asking, maybe even give them a bit of hassle!! lol

Thought I'd just give you an update and for those who like myself are looking to buy a reasonably priced laptop, then I would now from experience, recommend that you never buy a laptop from this lot! The first laptop I received had someone's dinner in between the keys. It was disgusting! The second one (which was priced at £249.99) came, cosmetically perfect, yet having switched it on and input all my personal details at start up, a pop-up appeared, warning me to switch it off immediately because the cooling system had failed.

I am more than angry at their customer service - yes the people on the phone are lovely, but Argos Outlet should be ashamed. Two and a half weeks without a decent PC and a company who claim to refurbish PCs but I doubt they do anything more than pop a 'refurbished' label on it and ship it on to customers who trust the 'Argos' label. Never again will I be fooled. I only received my refund yesterday for the first PC, returned 10 days ago. Utter shambles on their part.
