Assuming you're talking about the Vostro at the same price, this one is 400MHz slower on the CPU, and has 40GB less disk space. It's got slightly faster onboard graphics, though.
#6
Voted warm - small hard drive and weedy pentium dual core processor, but a decent price if you're only after something to run word and surf the web.

Please see Johndhuk's comments below - it seems the new Pentium Dual-Core processors are not 'weedy'.

thanks. didnt notice the processor 1.46 GHZ

my destop is about 4 years with 1.67 and not the speediest with mutliple programs running, although the memory 2 gig looks quite good

how does it compare to the laptop below

You can't judge a processor by it's clock speed only. This one will be much faster than your old desktop one even at 1.46 GHz. :)

IMO, this is a much better buy than the other one you linked to as it has a better processor and better graphics but is only a few ££ more.

Then you're looking at something a few hundred quid more

That 1mb cache on the cpu makes me a bit wary

jakenjo is right, this is far too underpowered for gaming unless you can find some 4/5year old games or more that will ONLY be played on it

The 'weedy pentium processor' you refer to is actually quite powerful.

It is the T2310 first in the new generation of pentium dual core processors... based on the excellent Core2Duo technology.

As a result, it is twice as powerful in real terms than the T2130, a 1.86Ghz pentium dual core based on older technology!

Don't believe me, I couldn't either! Here's some proof: http://www.intel.com/support/processors/mobile/pentiumdualcore/sb/cs-028241.htm

I got a brand new compaq with similar specs to this late September while in the USA, for an incredible £230! And have been delighted with the performance of this processor, don't just look at Mhz, there's a lot more to it! this particular processor I believe provides outstanding value for money!

For some reason I have really struggled to post this message!

The thing you most notice about top brands like toshiba and IBM is the build quality unlike alot of other brands. This new processor and the 2gig of memory makes it a fairly fast machine for the price, as for the hard drive its not the biggest but how many people really use 80 gig on a laptop?
#16
are we likely to find a better cheaper laptop in the next 40 days to xmas?

Sorry I nearly choked on my hot chocolate then, Toshiba and build quality in the same sentence shocked me.

I've had a series of Toshiba laptops fail on me, just switched off for no good reason. The power supply sockets on the rear of nearly all of their range suffer from poor quality build. They work loose and then you have to pay well over £100 for repair and sometimes more. I have 2 toshiba laptops that are under the stairs with this fault although one has a system board fault too and although they are both under 3 years old it's just not viable to get them fixed. I might throw them on ebay and at least get something for them.

I've had some nightmares with the ones that have been under warranty, the last time I called them they had moved their customer support abroad and I got nowhere fast, luckily I had purchased the laptop from Costco so they refunded me. Earlier this year a nealy £800 laptop managed 10 weeks of use before just refusing to work, luckily it was another costco purchase. About 5 years ago I had an episode where a faulty motherboard mean't my laptop making 5 journeys backwards and forwards to be repaired. They sent it back once without the usb ports and another time with a huge scratch on the lid. In the end I took legal advice and threatened them with the small claims court as I'd lost confidence in their ability to repair it.

And yet I still buy their laptops. I have a £1200 portege tablet coming next week, I'm playing the odds, you never know this time I might just get one that lasts.

Anyway, this is a good deal and I've voted it hot for that reason.

The OP deal appears to be an L series.... so that may not be valid, unless I'm reading things wrong?

I'm also concerned Currys are peddling the laptop as Pentium "Dual Core" when it is in fact a mobile celeron (according to the Tosh site?).

Anyone have more insight - am I getting confused?!

Ha, funnily enough I'm not using that laptop... it's at HP (Compaq) for repair! Only owned it a month and it wouldn't switch on, luckily HP/Compaq laptops have a good International warranty by standard!

jcooper - Don't worry, this model is definately a very capable dual core processor (cinformed from other websites selling same model) based on Core2Duo technology... NOT Celeron!
#22
Thought this HP was better.
Another couple of AMD dual core HP's at morecomputers, YOU CAN GET £50 CASH BACK FROM HP ON THESE MODELS. 654 £355, 656 £395.

How doest it compare to this and that Asus laptop deal posted earlier.
#24
Gut feeling? It's a toss-up between the advertised Asus (elsewhere in the forum) and the play.com deal posted a week ago - personally, inclined to opt for the Asus but, obviously, open to all the tech-heads advice out there:?:

I've had exactly the same problems with my Toshiba. The power socket became loose after 1 years use and now when I use mains, it can switch off suddenly. I find myself using the battery more and more and I have had to buy more expensive replacement batteries. Apparently, according to the Toshiba forums, this is a known problem with ALL toshiba laptops and they've done nothing to resolve it!

Even charging the battery is a nightmare, charging the battery means wriggling the plug until the orange light appears. Even when it appears, it can turn off suddenly meaning more wriggling! I've now bought a Sony VGN CS1W and will never buy a Toshiba Laptop again!

I have that ASUS laptop and it is very good for the price. The build quality is excellent, and it comes with a 2 year warranty which is very good. I was suprised at how fast it was compared to my 3.6GHz core 2 duo in my Desktop PC.

All of these laptops are good for the price, but I would recommend the ASUS as it comes with the 2 year warranty and I haven't had a problem with it yet. But, if you don't want to spend that little bit more, then the Toshiba is good for the price. That's my opinion anyway.

does this have a dvd writer?

does this have a dvd writer?

Have a look at Toshiba website, and next to DVD Super Multi drive (Double Layer) it says "... 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-R (Double Layer), 4x DVD-RW, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+R (Double Layer), 4x DVD+RW, 5x DVD-RAM".

The laptop mentioned there is Equium L40-I41 which is a bit different, but I assume we are only concerned with Super Muti drive. Hope this helps.

I'm just checking now. When adding to the basket is says that it's not available for Home Delivery, so can't use the code for 5% discount. What a bad luck!

£359 with the Telegraph £20 off code

Bang another 1GB in later on for around £15 from Crucial if needed I suppose.
#32
Which one is better Equium or Satellite? Also I'm not sure if Satellite comes with 2x512MB or 1x1GB of RAM. 1x1GB makes it easier to install 1GB later.

But the computer is a gr8 deal anyway!

Suggestion required. Have to choose one:

Toshiba Satellite L40-14N
or
HP 530

HP 530 comes with T2300E (not T2300).

Probably comes with 2 x 512mb so you would need to buy 2 x 1gb to increase it to 2gb.
#37
I think this HP 530 has got better spec than Toshiba Satellite (from John Lewis).

What do you think? I have to decide between these two. Satellite is cheap with 2 year warranty but with 512+512 RAM. But HP comes with everything but one year warranty. If anyone has used HP 530 would know if they are reliable.

HP has got T2300E (1.66Gz) which is better because it's energy efficient. Data bus speed on HP is 667 MHz with 2MB L2 cache while Satellite has 533 MHz with 1MB L2 cache. One thing that was bothering me to do a future upgrade on RAM. It's hard to replace 2x512MB (Satellite) than 1xGB (HP).
Only advantage Satellite has that it comes with 2 years warranty and Windows Vista Home Premium while HP has got 1 year warranty and Vista Basic. But I have already ordered HP530 from their website for my friend who has been bugging me about finding a nice & cheap laptop. Job done!

Thanks adr0ck for supplying the code. It came to £333, but delivery date is 12/12/2007 (ETA).
